Hello all,
Gregory from Dodgeville here. I just bought a Scan Gauge at the '09 Green Car show and want to know how to use it for optimum mpg's. I was getting 50's and a few low 60's already before buying it not counting some pathetic winter tanks...lol. I am skeptical of getting my money out of it in mpg's. Please help me with specifics. It is 4 season weather here and we have many hills so I am always going up and down. Thank you.

I think both Jud (bestmapman) and Larry (diamondlarry) can demonstrate how the SG is worth money in your pocket. :)

If you can get down to the Illinois Renewable Energy Fair in Oregon, IL this weekend I can show you some settings and how to use them for better MPG's.

Thank you for the offer Wayne. It's possible. You aren't Wayne Gerdes are you? Different Wayne I suppose. Where on this site is there info on using the Scan Gauge?
I know about keeping engine rpm low but that's it. It looks cool but it seems to have
too much info. I want in the 70 and 80mpg range for the summer. I have the engine block heater also.

The first thing I would do is set up the scan guage as follows.

RPM WTf
SOC TPS

For the SOC settings, it is a XGuage input and you will have to search for the input settings.

Concentrate on learning how to get the ICE to go off (RPM zero) and the techniques to get into a good glide. Once you have that down, then concentrate on the pulse side of it. Pulse with less then 1500 RPM most of the time. Master that first.

Just to translate a little:

RPM = Revolutions Per Minute
WTf = Water Temperature in Fahrenheit
SOC = State of Charge
TPS = Throttle Position Sensor

Thanks Sean. Sometimes I forget to translate.

I couldn't find SOC but found the other 3 inputs.

Here's a pretty good list (http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-prius-fuel-economy/52155-scangauge-best-threads-mileage-improvement.html) of Prius/ScanGauge discussions. Much of it links back to CleanMPG, but this should be convenient as a starting point for chasing various links.
