2009 Toyota Auris – Fuel economy all but guaranteed to be higher than the Prius-III.

Tokyo, Japan – Toyota announced it will produce a hybrid version of the "Auris" hatchback. The hybrid Auris, using engines produced at TMUK's Deeside Plant, will be produced at TMUK's Burnaston Plant.

The decision to build the hybrid Auris at TMUK represents the first materialization of Toyota’s plan to further its business operations in Europe and distinguish itself in that market through the strengths of its hybrid technology. It also reflects Toyota having positioned "product-focused management" and "management that places priority on meeting the needs of regional markets" as pivotal management themes to address the extreme hardships the global automobile industry has been facing in the current economic environment.

More than 370,000 units of the non-hybrid Auris—produced at TMUK and at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey Inc. in Turkey—have been sold in Europe since the model's introduction in the spring of 2007.

Based on the philosophy it has had since its birth to "contribute to society through the manufacture of automobiles", TMC, by carefully studying market needs by region, intends to consistently offer products that fully address peoples' needs.

With this announcement, the US should expect not a Yaris but a Corolla w/ HSD and for a price everyone will surely be able to afford.

Hmmmm... Since the Matrix (and now dead Vibe) are Corolla wagons, how much fun would it be to throw the Corolla HSD into that platform and roll out the world's most fuel efficient wagon. VW is the current leader with their TDI wagons, but a HSD hybrid Matrix would be the right answer for people who need a bit more cargo area length/height than what the Prius offers.

I'm not so keen on the styling of the Matrix, but that Auris is a looker! :woot:

Now Toyota's upmarket positioning (and engine upsizing) of the Prius III is starting to make more sense.

What, really, is the difference between the Matrix and the 5-door Auris? Is the Matrix longer with a little more cargo space? Or is the Matrix really just an Americanized (i.e., made to look more "rugged") Auris already? Either way, bring it!
