View Full Version : Hypermiling clinic went better than expected.

I gave a Friend with a Dodge intrepid a hypermiling clinic. NO FAS! Just worked in a LOT of N-ice-on P&G.

It went better than expected because I learned more than I expected from it. Much bigger engine in his car. I was surprised, with that bigger engine he could push hang-time a LOT farther than I can in my car. When we would lose speed during hang-time I could QUICKLY get the speed back with only a slight amount of gas.

If I remember right he said he has been getting 26-27mpg.
First stop gas station for air in the tires, we brought them all up to sidewall listed 35.
(three were at about 30psi, one was at 28psi)

I took the wheel first, 2-3 miles of low speed long glides to get the numbers up then 8-9 miles on the freeway working in as many glides as I could. Between hills and traffic it was difficult. Luckily it was a road I know well and I worked the hills and traffic to our advantage.
I hit 36mpg for a demo run for him.

Then he took over driving (a bit more uphill for his run). We stared the with the same low speed nice-on P&G so he could get the feel for it. After 2-3 miles he was starting to get it, we used the side streets about 2 more miles, then 5 miles freeway. Near the end of hit run, he was at 29.5 when we had about 3-4 blocks to go…. Then…. The dreaded poorly timed red light – 2 of them :( . as we sat at the light the mileage dropped to the 28mpg range.

Now that he has an better idea of what/how to nice-on P&G I think he will quickly work his way up into the 30’s

So Mike if your reading this:
Keep an eye on EVERY thing around you so you can:
Keep working on ways to safely avoid the breaks.
Work on smother shifts to neutral.
Keep those tires pumped up
Work on RPM’s during pulse around 18.

THank you very much Allen for your help tonight. It was very well gone. I did not understand what glide meant until i rode with you. to be shifting in to neutral when the pedal is not on the gas and traffic allows it.

Also to try and have a target of about 1800 to 2000. Thank you for the time. I was a little nervous at first but I think I will get the hang of it over the next few weeks.

again thank you for taking time out of your evening to help. it was a blast

Ya, must feel good for you to see your work passed on. :)

That afternoon with you was key in an unexpected way.
the P&G lessen was great - as expected.
what was unexpected was that you pointed out I was likely not seeing P&G results on my scangauge properly. Due to my ECU slow to feed data out after and during a FAS.

I am now putting in 50+mpg trips regularly, and don't feel like I even need to try hard . if I try hard 60's are no longer a dream, I can hit the 60's now if I work it.

i now feel P&G works, IF: You know your car and what is is capable of in different situations, have good feed back on how the car is running/responding to your driving, and are committed to finding ways to insure the glides pay off.

Hey Allen, nice work. It sounds as though both of you learned something by this.

Nice work Allen, and it seems he has the even larger version of the engine in my car. 36 is not bad at all for a trip!

the extra hang time is what i love on a bigger engine....i have a Z28 that i am hypermiling and the results are astounding....especially because my first tank (with fuel stabilizer after sitting for 8 months) was 24.something....i am not saying that bigger is better but fun nonetheless!

I noticed a couple large engines can get really good mileage when pushed (not literally ). They have great hangtime and make very efficient use of pulse and glide...VERY efficient.
