I gave a Friend with a Dodge intrepid a hypermiling clinic. NO FAS! Just worked in a LOT of N-ice-on P&G.
It went better than expected because I learned more than I expected from it. Much bigger engine in his car. I was surprised, with that bigger engine he could push hang-time a LOT farther than I can in my car. When we would lose speed during hang-time I could QUICKLY get the speed back with only a slight amount of gas.
If I remember right he said he has been getting 26-27mpg.
First stop gas station for air in the tires, we brought them all up to sidewall listed 35.
(three were at about 30psi, one was at 28psi)
I took the wheel first, 2-3 miles of low speed long glides to get the numbers up then 8-9 miles on the freeway working in as many glides as I could. Between hills and traffic it was difficult. Luckily it was a road I know well and I worked the hills and traffic to our advantage.
I hit 36mpg for a demo run for him.
Then he took over driving (a bit more uphill for his run). We stared the with the same low speed nice-on P&G so he could get the feel for it. After 2-3 miles he was starting to get it, we used the side streets about 2 more miles, then 5 miles freeway. Near the end of hit run, he was at 29.5 when we had about 3-4 blocks to go…. Then…. The dreaded poorly timed red light – 2 of them :( . as we sat at the light the mileage dropped to the 28mpg range.
Now that he has an better idea of what/how to nice-on P&G I think he will quickly work his way up into the 30’s
So Mike if your reading this:
Keep an eye on EVERY thing around you so you can:
Keep working on ways to safely avoid the breaks.
Work on smother shifts to neutral.
Keep those tires pumped up
Work on RPM’s during pulse around 18.
