I had to test drove a car home tonight after some repairs and wanted to see what I could get out of it with some easy basic hm techniques. So here is the nitty gritty

CAR
2006 MINI Cooper S, supercharged 1.6l with 6 speed manual
NO HM PREP! Tires at door jamb psi. Car full of customers belongings (and I mean FULL!) I did drive with windows up and no a/c. I only used dwl, dwb, psl and a touch of p&g. No fas or anything else. I drove my regular commute route of 30 miles one way.

Now I only had the MINI on board compter for data, no sg or a fill up for real numbers - but this was just for fun. It should be reasonably accurate though.

EPA 'new rating' 22 city and 29 hwy for 24 combined
Starting tank range = 82 miles to empty

Ending tank rang = 84 miles to empty
avg speed = 37.2 mph
avg consumption = 36.7 mpg
For a 152.916% of epa rating :D

I am now more convinced than ever that a properly set up MINI could be a really good pick for hm - yes I know the entry price is steep. But I am thinking something like an early used 2002-2004 non supercharged, 5 speed manual, 15" tires, no sunroof (you wouldn't believe how heavy those things are:eek:)

Oh well, it was at least a nicer commute home than my regular FSP for a change.

Doesn't that violate some kind of law of physics?

It just means that he pulled up the tank average by quite a bit. It probably had something like 5 gallons left (for the previous driver might have only gotten him 82 miles).

With nervous driving the ~3.5 gallons left would go much farther than the 84 miles, but it still included some of the owner's driving in the calculation.

Maybe he drove it home backwards.

You know you're a hypermiler if your car racks up more miles with the engine off than with the engine on!

The cars battery had been disconnected for the repairs (new cylinder head) so all values in the on board info display were reset and the readings were only my driving. The ecm substituted a base value for the initial calculations to give the 82 miles - I just did a better job than the assumed calculation:D
