It’s official: a new fleet of replacement streetcars will hit Toronto streets in 2012.

The Toronto Transit Commission today inked a deal to purchase 204 new low-floor, fully accessible adapted models from Bombardier for $1.2 billion.

The contract also includes an option to purchase up to 400 additional light rail vehicles from Bombardier to run on new light rail lines set to be constructed in Toronto under the Transit City plan.

It started the whole design selection process again and chose Bombardier as the winning bidder in May – but before securing funding for the biggest light rail vehicle contract in North American history and the largest municipal award in Canada.

The city had already set aside a third of the purchase price, but Mayor David Miller had to endure repeated brush offs from the provincial and federal governments as he vied for funding.... http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/toronto/archive/2009/06/30/ding-ding-toronto-orders-its-bombardier-streetcars.aspx
