View Full Version : Alternative Transportation Challenge Version 3 - July 1 to September 30
seftonm 07-03-2009, 01:09 AM Due to demand, this is the third alternative transportation challenge. The first two have gone well with almost 11000 in-car miles avoided and 300 gallons of fuel saved. We are into the prime outdoor weather for many people now so I'm looking forward to seeing some big numbers.
Congratulations to BailOut for racking up over 2450 miles and not consuming 65 gallons in only 1.5 months during the last challenge. Those are some extremely impressive numbers.
The purpose of this challenge is to keep track of fuel saved through not driving. There currently isn't a way to keep track of such information in the mileage logs, which was the motivation for creating this.
The rules:
-Alternative transportation will be defined as a transportation method that avoids travel in a personal vehicle. Almost any method that lets you meet that criterion applies: Carpooling, public transit, walking, biking, snowboarding, working from home, and so on.
-The preferred trip distance calculation is the in-car distance avoided. For example, if a trip would take you 5 miles in your car, but a bus drives 6 miles to get you to the same place, the car miles avoided would be 5.
-Data is “entered” by replying to this thread. I will update the results periodically, when I have time. To make it easier for me to spot the pertinent information, please post it in a format similar to the following:
USERNAME: seftonm
DISTANCE: 4mi
TRANSPORT METHOD: Bicycle
VEHICLE AVOIDED: Golf TDI
-The “vehicle avoided” item will be used to calculate how much fuel is saved. So you should either have a fuel mileage log for your car, or provide an average MPG for that car. If you can’t provide an average fuel economy, new EPA numbers will be used. To make things easier for me, I will look up your average fuel economy only once. All entries related to that car after that point will assume the same average, even if its fuel economy in the mileage log has changed.
Separate entries don’t have to be made for each trip. A day’s / week’s / month’s worth of information can be combined into one entry if you wish.
Results as of August 2, 2009:

Taliesin 07-10-2009, 09:33 AM I've thought about joining in on this, but seeing some of these numbers puts me to shame.
I almost always walk 1 to 4 miles a day. The real saving grace is that it avoids miles on the F350 supercabs here at work. And driven the way they are here at work (in a 15 mph psl) the get no where near what they could.

It is not really about big numbers, because none of us will be able to match Bailout. His commute is more than I travel in total, so no way can I catch him. It is more about logging the miles that get avoided and the gallons saved. The F350 is a great example of excellent results in this thread. Plus you get exposed to other ideas on travel, for instance my commute right now is bike, bus, and walk, but I also see that some have light rail, others carpool and so on. So don't let the numbers keep you away, because every little bit counts!

To me the individual numbers aren't that important as compared to the collective totals. Besides, the mile never traveled is the greenest one, so me being out front can actually represent too much individual travel, done in an alternative fashion or not.

Anyways, I'll be avoiding 40 11 mile car trips, I think I'd average probably 27mpg on those trips. That's 440 miles saved, or roughly 16.3 gallons of fuel. I'm buying the monthly passes to save some money, normally it'd cost me $44 to travel those 440 miles, but instead I'll be coming in more like $35.

rdprice64 07-18-2009, 07:53 AM Good week for me. Had my most variety, due to the fact that I worked on a Habitat for Humanity house on Thursday and was able bus there and carpool back. Of course carpooling with three other "stinky" guys after 8.5 hours of really hot labor tearing down wallboard and flooring was an experience. Luckily we smelled so back that no one wanted to even try to put the windows up and run the A/C.

aaronl 08-14-2009, 12:56 PM My riding isn't all commuting either. I also use my bike for errands, and recreational riding on the weekends. Every month or two I do a loop that includes the famous Old La Honda climb (http://felixwong.com/2002/09/old-la-honda-bicycle-climb/). Two weekends ago I biked an 80 mile round trip to San Francisco through the hills along I-280 (pro: easy parking; con: sore for several days).
My bike is a Trek 7300 hybrid. I replaced my rear tire maybe 1300 miles ago due to a major puncture. It looks okay but not great. My front tire is still stock with more than 4000 miles on it and it looks pretty shot. To be honest the whole bike needs some work - the front wheel needs to be trued and I think the bearing that allows the pedals to rotate needs replacement. I haven't been keeping up with maintenance because I'm getting very close to buying a road bike. I expected to buy one by now, but it's been difficult to get a sense for all my options and find the models I'm interested in. A particular sticking point is that I feel like I need a triple crank for rides like Old La Honda. I've done the calculations and even "compact doubles" lack the low gears that I take for granted. Bike salesmen have told me that reasonably fit young people don't need granny gears, but I'm not convinced. Most of the bikes with the specs I'm looking for don't come with triple cranks; the main exception I've found is the Cannondale Synapse Alloy 5, but I can't find one anywhere in my area. Since it's taking so long to find a new bike, I may delay my purchase until the start of the next dry season, in which case I should really tune up my current bike.
rdprice64 08-14-2009, 01:43 PM Wow Aaron 4,000 miles is huge  It must be getting pretty thin by now.
I know what you mean about all the options on new bikes, they are very confusing for me too. I am a reasonable fit old man and I use the highest crank 95% of the time. But that's mostly because I live in a relatively flat area. If I lived in SF, I would definitely go with the triple. Good luck finding a new bike. I think I'll just keep my seasoned bike for now.

So, follow bicyclists, BE CAREFUL OUT THERE! We are apparently invisible to most drivers, even with all of those blinky lights and reflective tape.

For September:
USERNAME: Bike123
DISTANCE: 180 miles
TRANSPORT METHOD: Bicycle
VEHICLE AVOIDED: Saturn SL2
FUEL SAVED: 5 gal
MT bucket 10-09-2009, 09:07 AM Are going to do another ATC, or isn't there enough interest? with the cold weather coming to ruin my hypermiling I am going to want to avoid driving my car more than ever! :)
MT bucket 10-18-2009, 10:49 PM well, I have logged about 400 miles carpooling now this month, where did everyone go?
rdprice64 10-19-2009, 06:46 AM September 30th Michael. I miss logging it here too :( But like you I am still keeping at it.

Someone else could definitely get one going if they want, that would actually make me quite happy. I just didn't think I would have the time to run it this term.

I might be interested, I don't know where it takes much extra time, show me what to do, and mabye I can give it a shot. I don't have a huge amount of time either since i visit lots of forums, but I do check this forum almost every day, so mabye I could do it.
seftonm 10-19-2009, 09:29 PM It's really only like a couple minutes a week. More than anything, I'm forgetful when I have a lot to do and had a feeling I would forget about periodically updating the stats.
I just take all the information that members post and put it into an Excel spreadsheet, which makes keeping track of the data very easy. I take a screenshot of Excel, save and upload the picture online, and then put it in the first post to show the progress we are all making. That's about all there is to it.
MT bucket 10-19-2009, 11:44 PM Oh, I have no idea what an excel spreadsheet is. I was just thinking get the thread going and add up the fuel saved at the end, would that work?
seftonm 10-19-2009, 11:51 PM Yes, that would work. Do it however you think will work best, anything beats not having one :)
MT bucket 10-20-2009, 08:40 PM Ok, I will start a new one for the winter season! :)
