Back in the 1970's there was a lot of chrome:

bumpers
hood ornament
side trim
wheels
door handles
tail pipesGetting rid of weight (and maybe apartheid) changed that. Fortunately the plastic bumpers don't fade these days.

Plastic has replaced a lot of bumpers and dashboards. For the interior, it was mostly safety considerations.

Yeah. Not much chrome. that's a bummer.

Here's my other car I have at home. A 1952 DeSoto with a beautiful chrome "smile".

There is a classic Farside cartoon with a car that looks a lot like that DeSoto:

two bears in a junked car in the middle of the woods. One
says, "Think about it Murray. ...If we could get this baby runnin', we could
run over hikers, pick up females, chase down mule deer--man, we'd be the
grizzlies from hell."
