Several places say it takes 10 oil calories for each food calorie in the supermarket.

A show today claimed 40% of vegetables were grown in Victory Gardens during WWII.

Let's see what you can think of.

Packaging:

Your Chilean grapes come in a plastic bag that was in a box that was in a case that was probably shrink wrapped on a pallet for five layers of packaging. Local produce from the supermarket probably only has two or three layers of packaging--from your farmers' market maybe two layers, fresh from your garden, none.

My wife worked in the produce department of a grocery store in Florida, they got their oranges from California...

I'll try to find a source on this later (I think it's Michael Pollan), but the average number of miles food travels in the US is close to 1500.
