I don't own either and have only driven an original Prius a little when they first came out, but if you read the massive amount of information on this site you'll quickly see the Prius is king of stop and go traffic and the HCH II is king on non-stop hwy driving.

Prius wins in combo driving also, since its margin in town beats HCHII margin on the highway.

HCH for those wanting a sedan w/ a trunk. Prius for those wanting the cargo flexibility of a hatch. Prius is mid-size, HCH smaller.

The Prius II is easier for older folks to get in and out of. It also has more carrying capacity.

The only real negative to the Prius is the poor rear view while backing up.We have the backup camera, but I guess I'm the wrong generation for the camera/screen.I turn around 180 degrees when backing up.
Other than the backing up, the Prius "beats" the HCH II in most things that can be measured-MPG, acceleration, carrying volume, old folks comfort getting in and out..Braking might be slightly in the HCH II favor, but the Prius is more than adequate in that respect.
