View Full Version : FE tanking, but still approaching a record

Driving to work in temps under 40F takes its toll, but I looked at my spreadsheet and realized that there is still a personal best to be broken. The lowest I have ever paid to fuel my car was 6.5 cents per mile, right after I got it last summer when fuel cost $2.399/gal and I was on a road trip getting nearly 37mpg. (This car was born to hypermile ;) ). After that my FE tanked into the 20s and low 30s and the fuel cost per mile got as high as 10 and 11 cents per mile but never fell much below 8 cents per mile, even when fuel cost $2.099/gal again.

If nothing strange happens, this should be the tank that breaks the personal best. Despite the slide in fuel economy, I'm still doing much better than I was at the same time last year. I could even make it below 6 cents per mile with the right pump price and a full-blown HS P&G push on tomorrow's highway trip. (It can't hurt once in a while to stay in practice.)

Anyway, I just want to post this as a testament to what a little effort and the right knowledge from CleanMPG can do. You don't have to be the best, it's the personal improvement that counts!

Hi Tim:

___Still catching up from being gone for so long but what is your $/gallon in New England now? We saw the high 30’s in Chicago this morning if the TV weather guys/gals were correct. With that, FE in your Accord is probably down in the low 30’s (33 mpg?) but at $2.00 per … I think you might be right there in the hunt for the lowest cost/mile at $0.066/mile? More disposable to go out to the movies or a favorite sports venue with the wife and kids possibly?

My last fill cost $2.439/gal, and I have seen stations as low as $2.32 in the last couple of days. I don't know how much lower prices can go given the relative stability of the market but I guess we will see.

As for how that tank wound up FE-wise, I somehow managed 38.7mpg at a cost of $0.063/mi. (Mostly highway and cool but otherwise favorable conditions.) No wife or kids just yet, so I'm making all efforts to put that disposable income in the bank pending the announcement Honda's MY '09 or '10 offerings. Something about a diesel Accord and hybrid version of the City? :D

My current tank has started off fairly low but I can't really complain. The lowest tank so far was 36.0mpg, this one is hanging in at roughly 35.5mpg. I clung to high 20s (27-29mpg) last winter despite my relative ignorance, so the informal goal is to keep all tanks at or above above EPA highway (32mpg) come hell or high water. It should be possible but may require a bit of extra effort when temps drop below freezing.

We were talking about fuel cost/mile at the Insight marathon. I can't remember how much Randall paid for the fuel in the compitition car, but I filled up my insight at 2.08/gal the next day. If we use $2.10/164mpg it cost $0.0128/mile to do the marathon. My personal best tank and highest price paid per gallon came at the same time, $3.39/112mpg=$0.03/mile. During the marathon the price of gas in Tankawa droped to $1.93, but nobody needed any gas.....Louis
