View Full Version : Jetta TDI vs. Prius-II... vs. HCH-II

6 guys with a Jetta TDI, Prius-II and HCH-II have a little fun :)
Recently, VW aired an interesting commercial with "interesting" factoids... Unbeknown to some, they have never gone head to head with a CleanMPG driver in a hybrid or TDI. I guess they have quite a bit to learn and we are certainly ready to "learn" them ;)
All said, we shot this parody in under 5-minutes with script discussion lasting all of three minutes :D
CleanMPG Jetta TDI vs. Prius-II Commercial Parody Credits
Tim Smith - Prius-II Owner, Actor and Driver
Mike Sefton - Golf TDI Owner, Actor and Jetta TDI Sportwagen Driver

Meet the Volkswagens
Prius Owner: Hey Max, new car ha?
VW Bug Guy: Ya, Da Jetta TDI clean diesel
Prius Owner: Ah, I got a hybrid so you know...
VW Bug Guy: A TDI set a Guinness World Record 58 miles per gallon.
Prius Owner: 58 miles per gallon? (spits up his water...)
VW Bug Guy: But dis baby hauls. Itz like Emmmm, EMMMM... Vats your hybrid sound like?
Prius Owner: Hoooooooo
VW Bug Guy: That's Cool.
Without further adieu, how’s the smack down looking now?

Compare and contrast... The 2009 Jetta TDI is a hell of a car but VW had better be very careful with its advertising given the 2010 Prius-III will provide a smack down of its own...
psyshack 06-03-2009, 11:00 AM Fantastic Gent's. :)
Can't we all get along?
Notice that there is only ONE station wagon here. I love mine - easy to toss bikes, skis, etc in the back. How about some hybrid wagon choices???
PaleMelanesian 06-03-2009, 11:43 AM Dave - I've been saying that for years now.
diamondlarry 06-03-2009, 12:23 PM Hmm, I wonder what the VW guy would think of my 100+ tank over 800+ miles? Not to mention less particulates and significantly cheaper fuel.:p
ksstathead 06-03-2009, 12:37 PM He'd no doubt think your car did not sound VROOM.
Hi Dave:
___This is by no means a slam of the TDI, just adjusting the facts a bit is all.
___The Jetta TDI can beat the Prius-II on the highway without question. The -III remains to be seen. The HCH-II however still owns both vehicles and I am pretty sure it owns the Prius-III as well. Around town, the Prius-I, -II and -III will eat a TDI of any sort and HCH-II up with no mercy.
___With that, the Sportwagen was just picked up a few minutes ago and although we still have the review to write, it really knocked one out on the second tank in particular!
___The following was achieved with a fully packed vehicle including 800 + pounds of people and ~ 100 pounds of gear in the 09 Jetta TDI Sportwagen!
First Tank
3 guys and luggage from Chicago, IL to Cincinnati, OH
4 guys and luggage from Cincinnati, OH to Irma, SC
2 guys and luggage from Irma, SC to Mooresville, SC for the first fill.
Tank #1: 908.5 miles on 14.153 gallons = 64.191 mpgUS
Second Tank
2 guys and luggage from Mooresville, SC to Irma, SC.
4 guys and luggage from Irma, SC to Thomas, KY.
3 guys and luggage from Thomas, KY to Chicago, IL for the second fill.
Tank #2: 1012.1 miles on 14.704 gallons = 68.832 mpgUS

___Larry, you would have your @$$ handed to you by a good TDI driver on the highway. Also, diesel fuel is now about $0.20 less expensive than gasoline right now as well. The TDI Sportwagen kicked @$$ given the number of people it was carrying, speeds we were driving and conditions we experienced. A Prius-II just cannot do it with the load it would have had to carry and speeds we traveled at on a 95% highway run.
___If I had to consider an 09 Prius-II or an 09 Jetta TDI Sportwagen for a 50/50 city/highway or higher highway split, I would seriously consider the 09 Jetta TDI instead. Up against the 2010 Prius-III, I would choose the 2010 Prius-III.

Wayne, can you elaborate on that? If I drove a Jetta TDI on the highway the same as I do my Prius, with a speed a few mph under the limit, and terrain methods, I could get better mileage in the Jetta TDI?
Thanks,
Harry
Hi Harry:
___Anything over 41 mph to 53 mph and you are going to fight the Prius in order to maintain SHM. Add terrain and it is going to be the toughest battle you have ever run up against. The 09 Jetta TDI Sportwagen eats that up. When Mike and I were headed to O’Hare on Monday morning to drop him off, we decided to use just the basics. From cold, he pulled 65.1 there and I arrived in the drive at 68.6 back. Dropping the weight really improved upon its capabilities and the FCD is within .5 mpg under the basics. Go Intermediate to Advanced and the TDI will pull low to mid 70's and walk away from the Prius-II on the highway.

psyshack 06-03-2009, 01:11 PM Wayne does the TDI have ablity's like the oiler Civic? Better or worse?
Hi Jeff:
___That Civic iCDTi would kill all the current hybrids AND the Jetta TDI with only the Prius-II and -III standing a chance in a really heavy stop and crawl. Anything moving from 15 mph on up with a good driver in the Civic iCDTi, the game is all but over before it even starts... Other than an Insight-I with a stick and good driver behind the wheel of one of those monsters of course ;)
___The US spec'ed 09 Jetta TDI has so much emissions controls added to its CI-ICE that it kills its true capability vs. the European spec Civic iCDTi. Parasitic high flow EGR, LNT (Lean NOx Trap) regenerations every 2 to 3-minutes and the real killer, a 7-mile DPF regeneration happening somewhere between 350 and 1,000 miles. Outside of that, the TDI will still pull 70 + when asked while the Prius-II needs some very nice conditions to see 70 + mpgUS on the highway... The Civic iCDTi would pull 80 + in similar conditions.
___Good Luck

wxman 06-03-2009, 01:48 PM Wayne,
Did the European-spec Civic iCDTi have a DPF?
Hi Wxman:
___IIRC, the iCDTi had two emissions control solutions back in 06/07??? One with and one without. Having driven that iCDTi practically from one end of the country to the other and back, I do not remember a single DPF regeneration ever occurring so I would say it was lacking one.

rjacob 06-03-2009, 04:15 PM Wayne, why don't you get sponsorship from Toyota or Honda, and go take the record? Just sayin... :D
Hi Rjacob:
___Honda was a sponsor... As was ScanGauge :)
Hypermilers complete new Guinness verified World Record at 68.54mpg (US)! (cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17869)

GardenWeasel 06-03-2009, 07:58 PM Great video - made me laugh! Strange to have picked up my car from having PM at the same shop... Come home, check out Cleanmpg and see this... Kinda a deja vu moment!

Be careful, you're not emitting much less in terms of particulates. The TDI Sportwagen gave 0.000 grams/mile.
