View Full Version : Insight Marathon Attempt: Live - Sept. 25 - Oct. 4, 2006
Hi All:
___We are in the hunt ... Randall took his out and I took Louis' out. Both pegged at 150.0 but the winds are rising and that is a killer as both Insight's were holding onto 1.4L/100 KM until the final 10 mile segment into a head wind. Both finished up at 150.0 mpg or 1.5L/100KM. Louis is on the course right now in Randall's. We still should finish up on Sunday but the winds sure do knock the Insight for a loop in terms of FE. We will be battling those all afternoon :(
___A ton more to add about Randall's pack, 12V at night, distance delta with the live FCD based FAS vs. the Key based one (2.8 miles worth) and how far we are behind already. 53 degree F launch but it is now touching 70 +. Winds out of the west-south-west at ~ 10 mph.

tbaleno 09-25-2006, 02:48 PM Arrg. I think eveyrone on the team needs to go on a diet to try to gain back some of that mpg the wind is taking away.
psyshack 09-25-2006, 02:48 PM What the wind taketh it should give back once going the other two directions. UNLESS you get the old Okie. If you dont like the weather it will change in 5 mins. syndrome. :)

Chuck 09-25-2006, 05:39 PM Would it help the Insight doing the Marathon run to have two spares on the rear tires? Of course it would wear them out quickly.
Then there is removing the passernger seat....

Chuck, Insight for the most part has to remain as a Non-Modified Vehicle. So seat has to stay and the Correct Tires need to remain. The spare tire can be left out since a lot of owners do that.

Hi All:
___I had a huge write up in the form and the satellite went out :(
___OK, Randall is currently on the course for the single night shift run. We will meet up with him on the Eastern portion to drive to his home (full blown P&G). He is going to put the Insight up for the night in the garage with the block heater. At dawn, we go (Randall goes) again. We should have 150.0 locked up after 250 miles when Randall finishes up. The winds have died down to nothing but temps are falling fast …
Some pics!

NEmystic 09-25-2006, 10:02 PM Chuck,
The spare tire(s) for the Insight are not as efficient as the Potenza RE-92s. This has apparently been tested and proven. Those low rolling resistance tires (RE-92) at 50+ PSI love to coast!
Chuck 09-25-2006, 10:36 PM Doing conversions at http://www.pege.org/fuel/convert.htm (http://www.pege.org/fuel/convert.htm)
Someone make sure I'm doing this correctly
Does the readout for 1.4L/100km really mean "1.4 to 1.499999L per 100km?
If the answer is yes, the mpg is between 156.8 and 168.01 :woot:
If this is one vehicle and you do a fillup at the end - it might be at least 3% better. That is my experience. For example, 157mpg in the FCD would be at least 161.7mpg over a tankful.
I realize that only about 1.25 gallons have been consumed so far....
Hi All:
___The Insight has exceeded our expectations for day 1 with a relatively solid 156 + mpg tank. We drove both Insights (Randall’s and Louis’) for the first segment to compare notes and just in case … On our night practice run(s) last night, I had a recal within 3 miles of leaving Randall’s home. I am more then a touch gun shy about running his Insight through a night shift with that experience. During the day, Randall’s Insight can sing with the best of them yet has a personality all its own when compared to Billy’s, Bradlee’s, Justin’s, Louis’ and my own from days gone by. Randall, Louis and I had to work through the differences and let her take us where she wanted to go is all ;)
___Now back to this afternoons post lost to the ether. Because of our concern for the Insight’s 12V system, we are only running a single night shift to keep our mileage schedule. With that, Randall is best qualified to maintain a tight SoC at night. Louis and I both know this tightened SoC control leads to a lower FE segment and that Randall can camp on a 1.4L/100 km segment. We just need to nail down distance so as to try and finish up on Sunday afternoon/evening. We also thought it was best to let Randall take his Insight home, keep it in the garage plugged in for the night. We may rethink this tomorrow but we will see how it goes. Our turnover should be much quicker given what we have all learned from one another today and we will be starting at dawn so as to get those miles up. By the time Justin arrives, the tanks FE should have settled out and we will have an even better idea as to when she may run dry? At the current tanks FE, we are going to have to run closer to 325 miles/day then the 260 we did today. Dawn to dusk plus one night shift should take care of the miles but it will be interesting whatever happens.
___Finally, this may be the Insights swan song but I sure hope it will not be the last. The Insight community has everything to do with this weeks event and we are doing our level best to pay that experience back as well show the world what the masterpiece otherwise known as the Honda Insight can be driven too. Let us hope the rest of the world sits up and takes notice?

psyshack 09-26-2006, 07:35 AM I dont know what the weather is like in NC Oklahoma. Here in the Tulsa area they are calling for southern winds of 10 to 20 mph thru sunday, except for thursday. Then its a northern wind at 10 to 20 mph. :(
These are indeed super human drivers in a super car. :)
Hi All:
___Randall took up the challenge before 06:00 AM in the dark this morning and drove with lights and the high rolling resistance cold for all it was worth. Louis is on the course now but the temps are a killer. Winds with warm temps or cold temps w/out wind. Tough choice either way but the warmer temps and little to no wind are crucial for maximum FE.

psyshack 09-26-2006, 01:07 PM One thing about certin parts of okiehoma. If you have a head wind or a slicing wind from the nw or the se you should get some tail wind action on two legs of the course.

psyshack 09-26-2006, 03:12 PM Tom they must be partying in there down time between shifts. Tonkawa is a wild place yeah know... :)
Hi Tom:
___The west winds are ripping up our FE on the western legs. We have dropped the ranges while heading into it to try and save a good segment but just when you think you might make 1.2L/100 KM, you have another 2 miles of head winds and 3 or 4 climbs with no drop off on the other side to help … It is frustrating to say the least.
___Justin is going to have a ball for about 3 segments and then he will experience the frustration we have if the 10 + mph WSW winds are still prevalent. None the less, we are still receiving great FE but these darn winds take everything you have gained and throw it out the window. That doesn’t mean we ever give up but when you see the 1.1’s and 1.2’s slowly fade into the distance on the western leg, oh boy :(
___Randall is currently on the course and I gave him and Louis everything I tried to hold onto a 1.2 when he sees it. Hopefully the winds will do there normal fall off after 04:00 CST and he can nail the barn door shut on his own 1.3. I will be updating the second day data tables in a few minutes.

Hi Chuck:
___I saw your post over at IC about Randall’s Insight being modded w/ MIMA. This is not the case as all hints of MIMA have been completely removed. It would not make any sense to use it under this regiment. Randall did bypass the key switch w/ a switch so as to not have to turn the key (break it) from IG-II to IG-I to shut down the car, turn back to IG-II to liven up the displays, to IG-III to start it back up and back to IG-II for normal running ops.
___As the schedule stands now, I will be driving the night shift segment tonight and possibly the dawn schedule in the morning … Wish me luck ;)

Hi All:
___Randall has retired for the night for a well deserved rest. He has some of today’s pics on his camera and should be processing them for upload in a few hours.
___Louis is turning out to be a marathon man given the double segment this morning and the current being driven at this very moment. It is a tad warm out too!
___After my night shift segment, we are going to park the Insight here at the hotel and plug in the block heater after midnight. I am beginning to get nervous … Randall has given me some pointers as to SoC control with the headlights/tail lights so my fingers are crossed. Anyone ever heard of DWL? I mean Driving w/out lights ;)

Chuck 09-26-2006, 06:34 PM Wayne,
I made a correction at IC stressing MIMA is not being used....
I hope the winds did not take too big a dent in the FE. My guess is more night driving is a lesser evil than windy days.

psyshack 09-26-2006, 07:32 PM Im sorry the winds are such a mess. They can be brutal here.
hobbit 09-26-2006, 07:32 PM At the output levels you guys must be running at, that 110 watts
into the headlights probably makes a real difference. Usually
it's down in the noise...
.
So you've got a real FAS switch -- cool. What else is in the
setup? Warm-air hack? Any non-stock aero? Side mirrors still
on? Tire pressure? Or was all this detailed already and I
missed it?

sno779 09-26-2006, 10:22 PM Hi all
I'll try to answer some of your questions while Wayne is out on the course. He has been out for 70 minutes now and it's just getting dark, so he will only have to drive a short time with the lights on. The wind had died down and it is still warm. I bet he comes back with a 1.3L/100 for the lap and a 1.4L/100 for the tank. We recorded a couple 1.4s yesterday when the tank was young and impressionable but the night and early morning laps sent it back down to 1.5 (156.8 MPG) I saw 1.4 several times on my last lap but could now hang onto it when I came to what we call the dreaded casino hill.
Our P&G speeds vary according to the conditions. Such as going up or down a hill, up or down wind, where the crest of the hill is, what the traffic is doing etc. A target rang is from 12ish - 45ish.
This is a lot of stressful fun and I'm glad I could make it. After I reset my 12v and cooled the IMA batt my car has run just fine. We drove it and Randall’s car on the first lap and both cars came back maxed out at 150+, so we stayed with the plan to use Randall’s car.
Well that's it for now yack at ya latter.....Louis
Hi All:
___Let us just say there was some hairy moments as I only used the lights after dark and had to manage the SoC as carefully as I could. Brought up the SoC to 9 bars and ended up at 1.2L/100 KM. Those westerlies died off which most certainly helped. I hope not to have to go through that ordeal ever again. Randall, you drive the night shifts from now on ;)
___Sorry about the pics … My Camera is in Louis’ car and that is at Randall’s right now :( Louis took the dash pics with his analog camera and Video recorder.

Randall
tbaleno 09-27-2006, 02:40 PM Yeah. With gas prices dropping I dont think they feel there would be that much interest in it. We can always hope for a slow news day.
tbaleno 09-27-2006, 03:27 PM I just got off the phone with wayne. He says they are getting strong winds. It helps them on some streaches, but kills them on others. He said they are running in to a problem because they may not run out of gas fast enough. They are thinking 2100miles or more before they run out. They may have to do more night shifts to put on miles so they end the marathon before everyone has to head home.

Hi All:
___Day 3 is complete … We are settling in on 1.4L/100 KM segments almost without fail and the tank is locking in on the same so far. Still a huge struggle given the 15 - 20 mph head winds while heading North today so expect to see some more 1.3’s and maybe even 1.2’s this weekend from Justin, Dan, and Bill when it warms up and the winds fall off somewhat. Tomorrow morning will be a monster as we will be facing high 40 degree temps and even stronger winds (20 + out of the north) :(

dcoyne78 09-28-2006, 09:41 AM Hey Guys,
Awesome driving! If you maintain 1.4 l/100km, use 13 gal of fuel, and drive an average of 17 mph (avg speed of Wayne's 1.2 l/100 km lap) you will need about 84 hours of driving time to run it out of gas which figures to 21 hours per day. If you do 1.2l/ 100km for the remaining miles then 17 mph might be cutting it real close even with 23.5 hours of driving time per day (4 hour shifts and 5 min per driver change). Is 13 gal about right for the overfill on an Insight? Good luck!!
Dennis
P.S. I doubt Wayne has ever used the AC on an Insight :)
Chuck 09-28-2006, 10:08 AM Time is the fire by which we all burn
Is this the dilimma: Great results from the "slow cooking", but not enough time to go 2100 miles more or less by Sunday? I'd figure more nightime driving to get there by Sunday.
Hi All:
___Billy called yesterday and suggested we head straight South to Texas on the back roads until the winds die down as well as try and run with warmer temps. The 3 of us here said we need to maintain the cohesiveness and decided to continue on from the Tonkawa launch site. Maybe or maybe not the best idea as the temps were in the mid 40’s this morning and there are 20 + mph winds … Either way, this will be the worst of it.
___First segment, 133.0/1.7L/100 KM :(
___Justin and Bradlee are here in the room and we are heading out for some training. Justin should be ready for the fourth segment of the day. Bradlee looks tired but he will be sleeping in just a few I hope.

___Wayne
tbaleno 09-28-2006, 11:32 AM Yo have 133mpg on the total in your chart, not on the segment.
tarabell 09-28-2006, 11:49 AM Today's forecast indicates the winds should be down to low teens by now and well below that this afternoon. And the rest of the week looks a lot warmer, in the '80s. Good bet to stay the course.

dcoyne78 09-28-2006, 01:58 PM Hi guys,
Keep up the great work! Maybe aim for 2 hour laps because you only have about 84 hours from 9 AM today to 9 PM Sunday. That is 42 laps at 38.8 per lap or 1630 miles for a total of 2455 miles! Wayne has put as much as 13.8 gal in the Red Beauty which at 168 mpg would be 2318 miles. If you go too slow you may need to drive until Monday or you won't run out of gas before everyone goes home. Your range is 12 to 45 mph? Some of you have done the 2 hour laps and gotten 1.4 l/100 km, unbelievable !
tbaleno 09-28-2006, 03:13 PM I talked to wayne again. He said today is brutal. It is going to lower their FE a bit. maybe to 1.5l/100km for the tank. Hopefully today will be the worst and they will get better weather the remaining days and nights.
Chuck 09-28-2006, 03:48 PM I wish it was possible to drive less today - drive more later, but time is a problem...
Hi All:
___Justin is on his second go around. As Tarabell posted, the winds have died down a touch and Justin nailed down a 1.4 on his first segment! Temps are peaking in the high 60’s so the next two runs should be good ones. Randall is turning his schedule to nights for his job and will be taking 2 shifts tonight.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
tbaleno 09-28-2006, 11:59 PM Looks like the guys are half way to 2000 miles.
I talked to wayne. They took a beating today, but no major damage was done. They are still on track for a >2000 mile tank. The expectation is that they may have to resign themselves to driving on monday to finish the tank.
Wayne said "I told the guys not to worry about [finishing on Sunday]. We want this record to stick around for a while."
Hi All:
___Another day complete … Randall tried a last shift during the night but with temps below 60 degrees, no matter what we try, the FE tanks and there is nothing that can be done to save it due to the huge increase in rolling resistance. He turned around, came back to the motel and called it a night. Tomorrow with much higher temps and less wind should be one of those special days were Justin, Randall, and Louis receive a good shot at a 1.3/1.2L segment. Dan and Bill will have great temps for their own as well …
___Good Luck

Chuck 09-29-2006, 10:34 AM You don't have to run 26.2 miles (or 43km) to experiance the challenge of finishing a long haul. Working 24 hours straight or any hard physical activity all day is similar. You get 1/2 - 3/4 into it, but it gets a lot harder towards the end. It's "running on empty" , "the wall"....
The challenge is having enough time with weather to get FE of 1.5L or better. If this could go on past Sunday, I have no doubts os a great outcome. Limited time and limited warm weather is becoming a factor. I don't worry about the ability of the driving team to do it, but if they will have a chance to empty the gas tank.
I'm estimating the actual FE is 3-5% better than the FCD, based on my Insight experiences....
psyshack 09-29-2006, 11:56 AM I was up yesterday in Tonkawa. Got to meet Wayne, Bradlee and Randall. Talk about humbling.
They appeared to be in good sprits, full of laughter, and ever wideing smiles. All of this encapusalting a TRUE GRIT to beat the Okie winds in the last days of the Insights production run.
I didnt get to spend any real time with them or get active at any level in the marathon. All my best laid plans seem to be laid to waiste. But the 30 to 40 mins. I was there where very joyful and fun. To be in the presents of such HM masters is awsome.
I drove the Accord up yesterday. Would have liked to have spent some time with Wayne on a Accord 101 clinic and possible lapped it once or twice. But again time/timing was a issue for me. I managed a horid 39 mpg ave. at just shy of 400 miles with the Accord yesterday for the trip. Driving in the winds that our marathon team was seeing is really hard on mpg. I was expecting great tail winds for the drive home. As fait would have it the winds died down a bit. Bad for me,,, I really wanted that tail wind. But great for the marathon effort. :)
I will be going back up to the event on Sat. I look forward to meeting others that will be making the trip to cheer on our member/drivers. I will be driving the Civic up this trip. And will hopefully get far better mpg. :)
I look forward to meeting other bothers and sisters of MPG Sat. :woot:

He even smoothed it over with the local constable which did not involve us but one of many great stories for another time :D Chuck, you are still coming up this weekend as well, correct? I will be picking up Dan and Bill from Wichita tonight when they arrive in country!
___Just a quick update … The winds are so strong and Tonkawa’s Homecoming Parade is this afternoon so we called Louis and asked that he head back to the hotel for 2 or 3 hours. Light winds and warm temps are the order in the late afternoon through the night and all weekend so we should start piling on the miles starting later this afternoon. I hope? Temps in the 80’s and 90’s and winds decaying to a minimum this weekend for Justin, Dan and Bill to take the little beauty to its absolute limits.

Oops. Sometimes I'm a bit slow.:o You guys are doing an awesome job! What a cool problem to have in running up against time constraints before running out of fuel. Keep up the good work.
Wayne is on the course now fighting a 23 mph wind from the south. Billy just got in with a 1.4L/100k after his fight with the same wind. We want to thank RH77 for taking Dan to the airport. He saved us a 150 mile drive.
When I called to ask my boss for more time off he asked if we were having problems, I told him we were getting such good mileage it is just taking longer then we thought to use up the fuel. So far we have driven 1689.9 miles and we figure we have used 9.97 gallons. Randalls record of 1534 miles on a tank is a thing of the past. Every mile we drive sets a new record. Yesterday and this morning had near perfect conditions and the drivers turned in some pretty nice numbers that bumped up our average, the conditions now are far less then perfect, but so far we have been able to hang. The forcast is for lowering winds and warm temps so we will be doing some night driving.....Louis
Chuck 10-01-2006, 09:47 PM Just got back after 1.5 days at the Insight Marathon. It was very windy this afternoon. I got 70.9mpg driving round trip - about 684 miles, but without wind it probably would have been 50mpg. Got 75mpg driving there Friday night, even with 15 miles of rush hour traffic, and 77mpg from Norman (south of OKC) to home. The killer was the first 100 miles from Tonkawa to OKC - 55mpg. :( Scangague would read a load of 75%, but wind made it about 85%.
Learned some things and Justing guided me around the course. Got 1.2L on an easier segment of the course - with him and the next day being a bad chase vehicle. The 2nd time was good for 18km, then hills killed it to 1.4L by 20km, then I missed a turn. :o Wind was significant at noontime and must have been just awful by 4pm.
If it has not been announced, this is a record trip on a single tank of gas - we will see how far this one is...
Yoshi 10-02-2006, 05:49 AM Hello from Japan,
We are also watching the exciting 2000 mile challeng from the far east.
We would like to know how the Insight is prepared.
- Engine oil brand and grade, such as 0W-20?
- Tire air pressure, 50+ psi?
- Pulse & Glide technique, what is the speed range, 10 - 30 mph?
- Any special modifications. such as warm-air-intake/radiator block?
Regards,
Yoshi
Chuck 10-02-2006, 07:37 AM It was a warm morning in Dallas, so temperatures should also be favorable 275 miles north at the Insight Marathon.

Hi Yoshi;
Well I guess www.CleanMPG.com (http://www.CleanMPG.com) has made the big time when even the Far East "Japan" is reading and keeping an Eye on this Insight Marathon. I will Copy & Paste your {Questions} to Wayne Gerdes (Xcel) to his E-Mail Address and if he does not get back to you on your questions right away, I'm sure he will once he gets back home. As you can imagine he and the others are very busy and I would think getting tired at this point. So give Wayne (Xcel) a window of time to respond.
Nice to see that there are others out there that are interested in this Event. Stay in touch.

highwater 10-02-2006, 10:00 AM Hi all........
Just got off the night shift driving 4 consecutive laps. ~150miles.
Left it with Wayne and Louis so I could get some sleep.
When Wayne took over this morning at daybreak there were 4 bars showing on the gas gage, but I figure he dropped one real quick. Those 4 laps used ~.96gal.
Randall
Hi All:
___Randall went all night long and we needed it. Winds are gusting out of the south at 25 + mph right now. They will be increasing throughout the day so we shut down until this evening as the winds only help on one side of the course and destroy us on the other 3 :(
___I suffered a 7 bar to 1 bar recal within ¼ mile of the hotel so will have to burn some fuel from the hotel to the normal launch to get her back up to mid range.
___Yoshi, we are using the Honda recommended Mobil1 0W-20. Pressures at 58 +, P&G w/ rate and range extremely variable depending on the winds, temperatures, and terrain. Only the radiator block at night or in temps below 70 degrees and a button to bypass the key switch. About your SG-II question … It can read Fuel Pressure on some vehicles but not on the 4 I have tried it on. I do not know about the Prius II but fuel cut shows a low fuel consumption when there is none on all cars including Dan’s Prius II.
___As it stands, we are sitting at 3 bars of fuel and are only 9.7 miles away from our goal. I think we are going to make it :) If our current projections are correct, we might actually make it to 2,308 miles but the winds are projected to be crazy high tomorrow days and into the night as well :(
___Good Luck
___Wayne
tarabell 10-02-2006, 01:46 PM As it stands, we are sitting at 3 bars of fuel and are only 9.7 miles away from our goal. I think we are going to make it :)
It would sure be nice to have a screen shot at 2000 miles to record the milestone? --hoping whoever drives next takes the camera along.
Linda 10-02-2006, 05:33 PM Wow, guys! Wish I was there... Excellent reading the recaps and the updates on the chart. Just... WOW.
:-)
Hi Tarabell:
___I drove through the 2,000 mile point in the recal a few hours ago. Just being behind the wheel while running through it was exciting ;)
___Linda, thanks for noticing!
___Here is what we are and will be facing :(
Tonkawa, OK. (http://www.srh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?CityName=Tonkawa&state=OK&site=OUN)
Hazardous weather condition(s):
Red Flag Warning
Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 70. South wind 18 to 21 mph decreasing to between 10 and 13 mph. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 95. Windy, with a south southwest wind 11 to 14 mph increasing to between 22 and 25 mph. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph.
Tuesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 68. South southwest wind between 11 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Hi All:
___Louis is back and he is glad he is. Managing SoC on the night drives w/ lights is tough as you have to pulse earlier and hold it longer then you normally would and we lose FE big time :(
___Tarabell, after 2,000 miles, the Insight’s FCD rolls over :(
___Randall is on the course now and I will take over for 1 or 2 into the early morning myself. Louis will take her out at dawn and Randall will pull another at ~ 09:30 AM. Stop until tomorrow evening again …
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Linda 10-02-2006, 10:08 PM 36 mph wind? Holy crap. Red flag warning indeed.
The FCD rolls over after 2,000 miles? I had no idea. :-(
lakedude 10-03-2006, 01:13 AM Woot! 2000 miles in the bag! Woot!
:woot: :Banane09:
Mike Dabrowski 2000 10-03-2006, 09:24 AM Sounds like you guys could use an Insight sail modification.
With winds that strong, my Iceboat can do 60 MPH.
http://pages.cthome.net/genesisone/b2s.jpg
;)
Chuck 10-03-2006, 09:41 AM If they drive all day, this could be when the tank runs dry.
highwater 10-03-2006, 09:43 AM Hey Mike, about that sail...........
We were joking around about the wind during this thing, and I mentioned I had thought about replacing the rear hatch struts with bi-directional air cylinders, so the hatch could be raised to catch the tailwind.:D
Randall
Chuck 10-03-2006, 11:10 AM Just to make it easier, this is the fuel economy as these milestones are passed...
2000 miles = 142.8571429mpg (passed this point)
2050 miles = 146.4285714mpg (passed this point)
2100 miles = 150mpg
2150 miles = 153.5714286mpg
2200 miles = 157.1428571mpg
2250 miles = 160.7142857mpg
2300 miles = 164.2857143mpg
2350 miles = 167.8571429mpg
2400 miles = 171.4285714mpg
2450 miles = 175mpg
brick 10-03-2006, 12:21 PM Still at it? Talk about stamina! I think the seven day point is about where I would have lost it and started draining fuel out of the tank in the dead of night. Except, the car is still being driven in the dead of night...
Chuck 10-03-2006, 12:34 PM I was attempting to add some useful info to the tables Wayne so painstakenly set up messed them up. :( The good news is the numbers are still in that post, but I am unable to figure what I did.
Currently they have driven at least 2050miles at 1.4L.
I deeply apologize for my butcher job.
Chuck
NEmystic 10-03-2006, 01:02 PM Remarkable!! :woot:

Tochatihu 10-03-2006, 04:40 PM Wow.
So, 3 people responded correctly to the poll, and I was not one of them (too pessimistic).
160+ mpg on a windy course...wow. Were there any daytime legs in calm conditions, if so how did those come out?
DAS
psyshack 10-03-2006, 05:07 PM Good Job!!!!!!!!!!
Being one of the lucky ones to see a small glimps of the effort and sweat. I feel very humbled by the effort put forth by the drivers. :)
diamondlarry 10-03-2006, 05:14 PM That would be 161mpg assuming exactly 14 gallons consumed.
Incredible!
I get 182.457 mpg.(2554.4/14=182.457)
Edit:2254.4 miles
Hi All:
___We are still having trouble filling Randall’s Insight. As she sits in his garage, she has consumed just 12.9 gallons. 11.94 at the station and 1.0 from a 1 gallon container. I think she should take at least 13.7 + the .1 gallons to get from the fuel starve point to Randall’s home. The calculated 174.x mpg (2254.4 miles/12.9 gallons) should have moved the metric display to 1.3L/100 KM (180.9 mpg) instead of 1.4L/100 KM (156.8 mpg). Hopefully he will get that last .6 - .8 gallons in over the rest of this week.
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/530/Louis_taking_last_of_the_data_figures.jpg
Louis taking the last segment data at the Insight’s fuel starve location.
___Randall will be taking the truck into work over the next few days so she can sit, off-gas, depressurize, whatever and he will continue to fill from another pre-measured 1.0 gallon tank at his home. Either way, she exceeded my estimates from early on and I want to personally thank the entire team for their help in making this happen. Of course most know the driving participants but some may not know that Doug (Tochatihu), Brian (NEmystic), Mike Dabrowski, Chuck (Delta Flyer), Jeff (Psyshack), Jason (Lakedude), Rick (RH77), and Bradlee all helped make this Attempt a success. I also want to thank the people of Tonkawa, Marland, and Ranch Drive, OK. for putting up with us for the last 9 days. We saw a lot of interest, acceptance, and hospitality from the local towns people and we sure appreciated it.
___Tochatihu, the only daytime (09:00 AM - 07:00 PM) segments with high temps (> 70 degrees F) and low winds (< 10 mph) happened on Saturday (Day 6) when Dan and Bill were putting in their miles and busted the EPA in the chops :D
___To let everyone know, I thought the Prius Marathon Attempt had a spectacular stat with over 8.5 hours on the low fuel light. The Insight’s Low Fuel light was on for over 10.5 hours! Talk about driving on fumes. I saw the last bar go out on my first night shift drive last night and it had me nervous the whole time. Louis just got in and drove his normal routine with no fuel and a darn near empty tank. I was still sleeping at the handoff to Randall this morning but after speaking with him on the phone, we thought it would run dry within 10 miles of the start/finish point. He made it about 14 miles beyond. Louis and I were in the chase vehicles when he ran dry, spun it around for some free elevation as he was in a slight climb, and she stopped where we took some of the pics.
___If you have any more questions, now may be the time to post them. Randall will get to them probably tomorrow when he gets off from work after a night shift tonight. Louis is already on his way back to the Phoenix area and I will be headed back up towards Chicago within the hour myself. I will probably stay as Lakedude’s tonight if we can contact one another.
___I am glad to be out of the Insight’s driver seat although I have an 800 mile trek of my own (at highway legal speeds ;)) to finish over the next 2 days myself …
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Chuck 10-03-2006, 05:23 PM Would this make the finalized FE 174.76mpg?
ericbecky 10-03-2006, 05:55 PM Congrats guys! I'll be looking for some good quotes for an article.
Also, you may as well start preparing your presentation for Hybridfest 2007 (http://www.hybridfest.com). Inquiring minds will want to know!
NEmystic 10-03-2006, 08:55 PM After weeks of planning and 9 days of amazing hypermiling, it's time to break out the dancing bananas!!
:bananapartyhat: :Banane09: :Banane08: :Banane23: :Banane10:
And, on a more serious note, those of us with a minor role in planning, support, and etc., hope all CleanMPG members and observers will join us in offering a standing ovation to the "heavy lifters" in this event; drivers Randall Burkhalter, Justin Fons, Wayne Gerdes, Louis Hudgin, Bill Kinney, and Dan Kroushl (in alphabetical order... 'hope I didn't forget anyone)
It seems both interesting and ironic, that amidst the oil fields that fueled America in the early 20th century, trendsetters have demonstrated remarkable fuel efficiency that will hopefully inspire automakers and commuters to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, and to minimize the contribution of automobiles to global warming in the 21st century.
laurieaw 10-03-2006, 09:06 PM applause, applause!!! way to go!!!
Mike Dabrowski 2000 10-03-2006, 09:32 PM Randall,
With a tail wind, opening the hatch would probably help.
Congratulations to all the drivers, that was some effort and acomplishment.
:woot:
tbaleno 10-03-2006, 09:36 PM Congrats to the team!
And to any naysayers about these sort of things. Some people say "If you are all about saving gas, why waste the gas to do these marathon things"
For the few dozen gallons of gas used (to get there and in the vehicle itself) there is a good return. If it can get a few people to hear about people getting better mileage and then they investigate and get just a couple miles per gallon more then the end result is a fuel savings with the added benefit of a few more evangilists out there to educate their friends and neighbors.
It also promotes conversation. When I talk about the event with some coworkers some people would overhere and join our conversation. They want to know the details and I tell them and they say "I can't get 160 miles per gallon in my car". But it opens the door for me to tell them about putting air in their tires and some of the more basic stuff that people don't realy have a problem with. For instance. I told them the guys were doing about a 20 mph average. They say "I can't do that" So we discuss driving 60 instead of 65 or 70 instead of 75. Most people are willing to give it a try.
If it weren't for interest in these events there are a lot of people that wouldn't give driving efficiently a try.
hawkgt647 10-03-2006, 10:04 PM Congrats to the team!
Whenever I'm thinking of "slacking off" and not pushing for a few more MPG's, I always remember what you guys have done and try to bump the FCD a little higher.
Well Done.
Now, take a break.
Thanks to all who were very accomodating as I visited Tonkawa. Also thanks to Delta Flyer for letting me drive his Insight (a first for me)! :) Congrats to ALL who participated.
RH77
efusco 10-04-2006, 02:30 AM Outstanding gentlemen...truely outstanding.... I just can't get the thought out of my head of how many more days you'd be going had the winds not be so adverse...
highwater 10-04-2006, 02:52 AM There is still much to come. Many of the final pics will be processed after Wayne gets home in a couple of days. I will be driving the pickup for a few days, until we are satisfied the Insight will not hold any more fuel. It is still sitting in the garage, and I was able to get another ~16 oz. in her around 11:00PM last night. We need to get most of this one gallon can in the tank to get her back up to around the 14 gallon mark. Come on baby, BURP! The purpose of all this fuss, is to come up with the final mpg number. Give me a minute to get the Insights log book updated and, I will share all the figures from the marathon fuel tank runout, to the garage; so everyone can see what is going on.
And briefly; Thanks for the support everyone, including our friends in Canada and Japan.

It was very exciting to watch the attempt from far east...

HCHCIN 10-04-2006, 09:42 AM Over 2250 miles on one tank of gas. Fellas, that means you could've visited "tarabell" in LA and "Hot Georgia" in Atlanta without stopping for gas.
Pee breaks on the other hand...
tarabell 10-04-2006, 10:22 AM Randall--I'm curious to know how many gallons was the fill at the beginning? I'm assuming the gas station was the zero miles point?

sno779 10-05-2006, 12:51 AM Hi everyone
I'm home. I got in tonight at a little after 8:00. Yesterday I fought the same head winds we had at the marathon but today enjoyed a nice tailwind untill Gallup, then a head wind the rest of the way. For those concerned about the fuel consumed getting to and from the event, I averaged over 90 MPG there and back.
I want to say that I consider it a privllage to have been asked to join the team and it was a real honor to work with world class Hypermilers. It was a lot of hard stressful work and we were glad it was over, but I bet each of us have thought of little things we could do "next time" to improve the numbers.
Randall-- I don't know why I didn't think of it yesterday when we were shaking the car, but you could put the gas cap back on and then shake the car as hard as you can to burp it with out spilling any gas.....Louis

highwater 10-05-2006, 03:00 PM tarabell….the following should answer yours as well as cover some of the other questions, and I think Wayne has a pic of Louis rocking the car while I was filling it up.
I finally got the rest of the 1 gallon from the measured container into the Insights fuel tank. But first a little history from the (my Insights’) logbook………
Overfills after pump handle click-off:
07/31/06 an additional 3.221 gals.
09/24/06 an additional 3.250 gals.
Regular fill-ups (not run dry) without topping off that exceeded the 10 gal. mark:
09/22/05 10.102 gal.
10/07/05 10.150 gal.
11/03/05 10.043 gal.
12/19/06 10.085 gal
02/03/06 10.218 gal
03/02/06 10.043 gal.
05/06/06 10.075 gal.
05/26/06 10.068 gal.
07/19/06 10.177 gal.
08/24/06 10.374 gal.
09/14/06 10.363 gal.
For the marathon, we overfilled the tank on 9/24/06, as noted above, after some training runs for Wayne and Louis that night, and took it home to park in the garage. I left from home the next morning, and drove to the launch point, where we manually topped off the tank, and reset the trip meters.
Upon the marathon’s final run-out, we added 1 gal from a pre-measured container, and drove straight to the filling station. There we put in 11.941 gal., and refilled the container with exactly 1 gal., and drove straight to my home, where she still sets; unmoved. I will leave it sit until we, my fellow “websters”, arrive at a consensus for the final numbers.
So, the ins and outs of the consumptions are this:
She ran dry and we added 1 gal on the side of the road.
At the filling station we added 11.941 gal.
I put the other 1 gal in while she has sat in the garage.
Total gas added to the tank at three different times between running out and the present time: 13.941 gals.
Consumption since running out:
25.0 miles to the station @ 125.2mpg = .19968 gal.
2.4 miles to home @ 116.5mpg = .02060 gal.
Total consumption since running out: .22028 gals.
Taking the total gals. in of 13.941, and subtracting the consumption of .22028 gals. leaves 13.72 gals volume.
This is comparable with the historical numbers from the logbook, which if figuring 10.5 gals factory capacity plus the 3.25 additional gals. after pump click-off , gives 13.75 gals. volume.
2254.4 miles/13.72 gals.=164.315mpg. avg.
Hey Louis…..figure what the third decimal is worth; there’s your inches per gallon.:Banane22:
They finally ran the press release we sent them in the local paper yesterday, Wednesday, October 04, 2006. Thanks to Bradlee Fons for composing it.:D
And one other thing...............which one of you guys were driving fast enough to get that bug splattered on the windshield.:Banane36:
Randall
Hi All:
___Thanks for the kind words about the event from all of us. The Insight performed magnificently as expected but it was a struggle. I am absolutely kicked and pulled in with a slight fever but am home. I have so much to add that had nothing to do with the Marathon wrt Randall’s area in OK. and Lakedude’s own hometown. Maybe for another thread with a link. I am sad to not be with my Marathon buds for another day or two yet glad the event is finished as it wore me down something fierce.
___Randall, whenever you feel you have a solid top off, call it. I felt she could hold ~ 13.7 as that is what I remember mine accepting from empty. If she will not accept another ounce after tonight, I think you can call it official. 164 mpg’s over 2,254 miles might take awhile for someone to break but at least we blazed the path for others to follow! Thank you for hosting the event as I am sure your wife had just about enough of the whole mess. I think that was the case for all of our wives actually ;)
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Chuck 10-06-2006, 02:49 PM Check out the 1st para of this Wikipedia link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermiler#Techniques) for accuracy.
Hi All:
___Although I still have a ton of pics to process from the event (not many more worth posting however), the following link is what Randall, Justin, Chuck, and I did while Dan and Bill were putting in there miles on Saturday of the event. It was a perfect day for a tour of Marland and Ponca City, OK. if I do say so myself!
While at the Insight Marathon in Oklahoma, we did not just drive ;) (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13684#post13684)

___I wish I had some pics of Jeff (Psyshack) but there were none on my camera. Maybe Randall or Louis have some on their own? I also hope to hear back from Randall as to the final gallons filled so we can come up with a final mpg.
___I only wish everyone could see all the pics in full size and in sequence as I pulled them from the camera. This event was really something special although I am not sure the pics in the sizes I posted have done it justice.
___Good Luck

Chuck 10-08-2006, 08:18 PM 2nd picture of me I looked too far away from the camera. :o
Let's hope we hear from Randall so we can find out the official mpg
I seriously think you could submit some of those pictures to www.fuh2.com (http://www.fuh2.com) to promote CleanMPG and diss the Hummer more tastefully.
highwater 10-09-2006, 01:21 AM Taking the total gals. in of 13.941, and subtracting the consumption of .22028 gals. leaves 13.72 gals volume.
.......................
2254.4 miles/13.72 gals.=164.315mpg. avg.
This was from my previous post, and I'm calling it good from this end. If there are no further questions, I will start driving the Insight again on Monday night.
Randall
Hi Randall:
___Congratulations! You now own the most fuel efficient – mass produced automobile in the history of the world with a tank range of 2,254.4 miles at 164.315 mpg’s on a single tank of fuel! That is an extremely tall order given what any of us could possibly have imagined just a few short years ago.
___To go along with that, let me personally thank you as I am sure all the participants have already for allowing all of us the opportunity to take part in this once in a lifetime event.
___When we began discussing this event ~ 2.5 months ago, I had imagined exceeding the 2,000 mile barrier by the slimmest of margins if that was even possible. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever consider that your Insight would exceed that lofty goal by yet another 10% given the 2,000 mile pinnacle in and of itself was so outrageously high it seemed all but impossible. All 6 of us will be able to look back as others eventually take our place at that lofty peak knowing full well that your Insight offered all she had, exceeded all of our expectations in some of the worst conditions, and she was the first and possibly last of a breed of hybrids that is capable of such heights.
___For now, the 2000 - 2006 Honda Insight has left me with respect for an automobile like no other ever will and her demise saddens me. Anyone that has experienced what she is truly capable of will surely feel the same. Let us hope Honda with all of its advanced technology can come up with an even more fuel efficient solution for our children’s and our children’s children’s sake given the world what it is today.
___Thank you again for the opportunity of a lifetime.
___Wayne

Wayne (xcel) Thank-You for the Pictures. I like them and they are just fine for those of us back here while all this was taking place in OK. :)
Proco 10-09-2006, 09:11 AM If I ever get there, could I drive a Prius?
If you ever find yourself in New Jersey and I'm available, I can guarantee the Prius. :D

When are you going to update your milage logs on this sight and GH? I want to see those big numbers on the charts.
I was out on my marathon P&G training course today and beat my former best lap by 16 MPG. I guess I learned a thing or two at the marathon.....Louis
highwater 10-10-2006, 01:06 AM I was out on my marathon P&G training course today......................
Louis..............you are a sick man:D
About those mileage logs, on one hand, I still feel like we should set up another vehicle in the database as the Marathon Insight, with all the drivers listed in the notes, etc., but on the other hand, the mileage was on this vehicle, so it should go on its record.
I just dont want to take personl credit for all that FE.
Randall
sno779 10-10-2006, 02:32 AM I am pretty much sick of P&G but my course is on the way to Tucson and I had to go there anyway soooo
I think the record should be on your car since that is the one used. You could put the names of the team drivers in the notes.....Louis
sno779 10-11-2006, 12:33 AM Thanks Randall. I see that GH had to add another bar to there graph to fit in your (our) 164 MPG. I love seeing those big numbers....Louis
krousdb 06-13-2007, 08:11 PM I stumbled upon this thread this evening and it brought back the experience in vivid detail. I am eagerly looking forward to Honda's next offering. I have a feeling that a number of us might be back in Tonkawa, say in a year or two? Maybe with both a Honda and a Toyota battling it out for the top spot.
sno779 06-14-2007, 12:29 AM Which one are you going to drive? Or you going to switch back and forth between the two?
krousdb 06-14-2007, 10:44 AM I will be the owner of one of them. Until I get more details, I won't know which for sure. There is merit to drivers switching between the two, but there is also something to be said for two teams pitted against one another. Nothing drives performance better than the spirit of competition. I just hope that Wayne is on my team...:D
Chuck 06-14-2007, 01:12 PM I hope to have at least five more years on my 2000 Insight. Really hope to keep it as a spare and on it's 25th anniversery make it one of the first Texas hybrids with a speciality Antique Car license plate. :)
