View Full Version : Week of 9/25/06 - 10/02/06
brick 09-25-2006, 06:22 AM It will be a nice change to start this thread off on a positive note. It appears that I have started off this week and tank on fire with a couple of really good segments. I use relative terms, because short of doing a warmup P&G you just can't expect the same numbers at 50F in the dark that were once attainable at 70F in the warm sun. But still, I'm exactly 160 miles into this tank and showing 38.2mpg on the ScanGauge due to my return trip from RI yesterday and a 38.7mpg commute this morning. (The killer was that trip to the grocery store and some around-town driving yesterday.) This tank should remain relatively good since I have to travel to a wedding this weekend and only have 3 days of commuting to contend with.
I should mention (particularly for the benefit of new members/readers) that these numbers are coming from the consistent application of only the most basic techniques: highways speeds in the 60mph range, cruise control, coasting downhill in neutral when it's steep enough, planning way ahead (DWB), some DWL where apropriate, and shifting below 2K RPM every time.
Chuck 09-25-2006, 08:14 AM Had a good run this cool morning - 80mpg.
Had a number of concerns such as a tire that was not holding air and a posible O2 sensor problem (monitoring it to see if "Check Engine" reappears....)
tbaleno 09-25-2006, 09:40 AM I had an okay commute. car said about 54mpg. I'm hoping to keep this tank about 47. It may be the last tank better than epa before winter.
psyshack 09-25-2006, 11:57 AM I think the current tank,, is a tanking tank. I started late last week. And wouldnt you know there were bad head wins to contend with both ways on my daily drive. Little upper level impulses crossed the state before rain hit late thrusday and friday. You just cant win with heads wins both ways. :). Friday I hauled the wife to work. Then after work we went to pick up a 1/4 beef from a butcher. Add the extra weight, the wind and it adds up to no good. BUT the T-bones so far are excellent! :) I couldnt get the car up on the 50 mpg curve no matter what I did this morning. Came in at 47 mpg for the drive in with the tank setting at 45 mpg by the SG. I only have 3 days to work this week. Then Im off thursday and friday. Going to try and day trip up for the Insight run. :)
diamondlarry 09-25-2006, 06:56 PM I have some numbers from my new ride. It is a '99 Saturn SL2 DOHC 1.9L with a 5-speed manual. I always new that the DOHC Saturns always got lower FE but never knew exactly why; now I know. The DOHC cars have lower gearing in the transmission. My temporary ride(SOHC) would run ~2500 rpm's at 70mph and the new car runs at ~3000 rpms.:( So it looks like highway speeds are definately going to be a killer. It also means that I will have to work much harder to get good FE numbers at the slower speeds around home. Now for the numbers. This morning's trip to take the wife to work started out at 42 degrees and I never did any FAS so I could let the engine warm up for my trip to work and I ended up with 36.8 to the wife's shop. From there to my shop was 58.1. In the afternoon I got 64.6 going back to pick up my wife and, from there to home, I got 52.3.
brick 09-25-2006, 08:46 PM Transmission swap?
philmcneal 09-26-2006, 12:47 AM hm i thought lower gearing was better for low speed fasing... hmmm i mean doesn't it just allows you to fas quicker?
Those are pretty good numbers for no FAS...
diamondlarry 09-26-2006, 03:01 AM Those are pretty good numbers for no FAS...
I need to clarify that. I didn't FAS on the first part where I take my wife to work. After that segment however, I did FAS.
hm i thought lower gearing was better for low speed fasing... hmmm i mean doesn't it just allows you to fas quicker?
That's what I'm hoping for. I'm a bit concerned that the engine will have to turn at a higher rpm to get up to speed though.
Transmission swap?
That thought has occured to me. I still have the trans mission from the dead car. The problem there is that I'm totally clueless on how to do the swap and I don't have the $$'s to do it at the moment.:(
Chuck 09-26-2006, 09:23 AM Got 80mpg this morning, but it's all relative, as Randall is going about twice as far...
diamondlarry 09-26-2006, 06:14 PM I just got back from a practice run that was about 5.3 miles long and pulled off a 64.8 mpg with the new car. This was the first run with the EFIE hooked up. The EFIE is currently set at about .325 volts. If I go any higher the idle starts to get a bit rough. For my pulse and glide(engine off on the glide portion) I stayed in 5th and went between 25 and 35. The gearing is so low that I can cruise in 5th at 20 mph when the road is level and can even accelerate lightly. Even though the head was milled .050", with the grooves and Power Lynz in the intake ports, I have absolutely no pinging on 87 octane gas when accelerating under heavy loads.

ahaha that's more like it... welcome to my world! only one gear to rule them all! except when your dead stopped of course :P
I find low gearing win win in speed limits lower than 40 mph imo just because I can always be in the highest gear and accelerate with loads the engine can handle. Then FAS when your desired speed is set :)
how many stops do you encounter on your trip larry? I have at least 5 to 7 1st gear starts on my way to work. My luckiest attempt was 3 stops, but with the wave of lights I have to battle as well complete street turns.... :(
on the plus side on the way to work and back was identical! 4.5 LPK (51 mpg) although what's odd is that on the way there I've burned .5 liters while on the way back I've burned .6... hm and the funny part is on the way there is longer by 600 meters since I've choosen a different route to go home instead of going opposite direction.
Or could be the SG acting up again.... when I see 150 km/h average speed at the end of my segment I shake my head down and know the score I got was not real.
diamondlarry 09-27-2006, 03:02 AM I reset the current trip on the SG at a stop sign then I have a right-hand turn ~3/4 of a mile later. Then, 1 mile later is another stop sign. Since I'm a hypermiler though, it's a rolling 2nd gear start. Then 1 mile later, another "rolling stop." Then I have a 2 mile stretch with no stops. I then have another right-hand turn with a 1/4 mile stretch to my driveway. My drive is 1/10 mile up a slight grade where I turn around and pull into position for the next trip's start.
tarabell 09-27-2006, 11:16 AM If all goes well the rest of this week and next I should be getting another 60+mpg tank. Husband has done an about-face since daughter left and decided to put her car on the street and use hers--not mine--for his daily dawn trips to the health club. Without going into too big a tangent, he’s found her car saves him a buck-fifty in parking AND reserves a street spot for our trash cans on pickup day. Talk about win:) win:)... I am thrilled to death to have a chance at a few more really good tanks before winter but trying not to let it show too much…
psyshack 09-27-2006, 07:04 PM Just posted a tank of 46 mpg. I was expecting this at the begining of the week. To my suprise I was salvaging it abit. Boy was I feeling good about that. I had a steller trip into work this am, includung droping the wife off with a 56 mpg segment. After leaving work I got to the wifes office at 54 mpg. Man O Man was the tank coming back. :) Then the wife struck. She had to go into the belly of the beast. South on Lewis ave. down into the 71st area to the post office. All hope was lost. Folks were more intrested in there cell phones than driving. Then kids in there 4x4's wanted to throw fire crackers in traffic and leave folks way mad then wheel over curbs and such to get out of traffic. Then you couple that with the folks that dont clear intersections before the red light and you then get grid lock. After all of that, this portion of the segment home was way under 30 mpg. I got the ave for the segment back up. But the damage was done.
LibertyFarm 09-28-2006, 11:29 AM Today I drove from Mansfield to Columbus, Ohio to pickup a part for work. The route was I-71 with just a bit of city driving on each end. I averaged 44 MPH with a max of 66. On the way down, I got 42.6 and 41.3 on the way back.
When I returned, my gas gauge was at 1/4 so I filled up. 384 miles on 10.05 gallons - 38.2 MPH for the tank.
On the way home today, I will pass the manufacturer's recommended break-in period of 1200 miles (although I know that true break-in takes longer than this).
raguru 09-28-2006, 12:36 PM Since I still don't have my Scangauge, I have to always wait until the end of the tank to see how I did. I filled the tank on tuesday and got my best yet 43.95 mpg (361.8m 8.223g)!!! I was totally tickled by it. I am even more motivated to get to my goal of 45 mpg.
wburke8302 09-28-2006, 03:50 PM Had a good segment this morning....54.0 MPG on the way in to work. I have to go to an offsite meeting this evening, will have some city stop-and-go traffic, so we'll see how good/bad this afternoon will be.
brick 09-28-2006, 04:31 PM No work today, but 39.2mpg over a nice highway segment @65mph with the cruise on most of the way. Just a few NICE-ons to bring the numbers up a touch when the opportunity arose.
philmcneal 09-29-2006, 03:08 AM hey brick so why aren't you fasing again? lost the touch ;)?
My gas light finally came on after 820 km, wow! Its a new record, OH BOY I BET ITS A 50 my first 50!?!>?!! :Banane59: :Banane59: :Banane59:
haha Ok I won't fill up gas unless its dirt cheap! Lets see how far can I actually go ;)
Such a shame my sg lost the data so I won't know unless I fill or... run out of gas!
I think the last time my SG was calibrated and my gas light came on, I had 10 liters left... pretty reasonable if gas is less than 10% left and the light came on. So that means in theory I have 200 km left... I wonder if I should go for 1000km.... i guess maybe its time I get a jerry can ;)
so where can I get a jerry can?
basjoos 09-29-2006, 07:28 PM Drove to my brother's house in Durham, NC via I-26 to Asheville and I-40 to Durham. Returned via I-85 to Greenville, SC. Drove the speed limit for the most part (mostly between 65 and 70mph) and got 66 mpg for the trip.
I am starting to see the effects of the cooler weather on my mileage in my local commuting; Greenville, SC to Asheville, NC and Greenville, SC to Greenwood, SC. Got 68mpg on my latest tank.
philmcneal 09-30-2006, 03:54 AM ok so i chickened out and was lazy to get the jerry can. my odometer read 530 miles and i put 10.9 gallons in for a new record of 48 mpg. Ok wasn't a 50... but now that I'm beggining to experiment with mods, maybe 50 will come next tank.
And YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I FINALLY REACHED EXPERT STATUS! WHOOO!!!

wburke8302 10-02-2006, 07:53 AM Filled up my tank Saturday night. Another great tank! 505.5 miles, 49.0 MPG. I'm really starting to like this whole high FE thing.
Chuck 10-02-2006, 08:02 AM Got 80mpg this morning.
Not so routine is an identical Insight passing me - going about the speed limit.
psyshack 10-02-2006, 08:50 AM I went into waynes world this morning! When I hit Glenpool this am I was at 57 mpg in the Civic. But alass the traffic got me. By the time I got to work I was at 53 mpg.
Here in about two hours I will leave to go to Sallisaw, Ok. to start up a job. I will be heading basicly southeast out of Tulsa. This will have me battling the 15 to 20 mph southern winds. :(

laurieaw 10-02-2006, 09:16 AM considering this is october, and we have been known to have snow in october, we have had great weather this past weekend. i went horseback riding at both places that i ride, one 25 miles away, the other 40.
i am at half a tank right now, and the readout is at 60.4MPG.....i didn't think i would see that again this year. woo woo
did i mention that i have to have the plastic piece under the front end that protects the engine from dirt replaced? i ran over a deer last spring, wondering at the time how my low level car went over it in one piece. apparently the part cracked and after jiggling around all summer, came loose in front this week. i could hear something flap flap flap under the front end and was lucky enough to find a service station open on the way home. he screwed it back on for me. he also said he's taken some classes on servicing hybrids, so he's not a stranger to them. i will have to remember that next time i need something done. honda is only going to charge me about $90 for the part and putting it back on, so i guess i am getting away cheap on this one.
diamondlarry 10-02-2006, 04:33 PM I had a pretty good day considering I'm still learning the car's quirks. I got 36.9 for the drive into the wife's work. The reason for the lower numbers in the morning is that I don't FAS since it's only a 5.8 mile trip and I want the car to warm up. From there to my work, I got 53.0. This afternoon with some warmer temps in the high 60's, I managed a 62.8 back to the wife's work and, from there to home, I got 50.6. I hooked up my injector kill switch and went on a test run to see how it worked and got some good results. On my way home on the test loop, the switch had a minor malfunction and the car wouldn't re-start after an FAS. A quick look under the hood and the problem was solved. I ended up with an extra dead stop that I normally don't have and managed a 67.0 by the time I got home and turned around. So far, this is a best for this car.:)
