NEW YORK -- The improvements in electric cars has made it possible for New York City taxis to be powered by batteries. A handful of electric taxis will be on the street in the next couple of months.
The benefits are the electric cars are they don't pollute and don't burn costly gasoline.
The disadvantages are they can only go 120 miles on a charge and take six to eight hours to re-charge.
The cars also can not go fster tthan 80 miles per hour, but since the speed limits around town are no more than 55 - that shouldn't be an issue.
The Taxi and Limousine Commission says the electric cars will be the Chrysler P-T Cruiser model. The T-LC has already approved several models of hybrid gas-electric vehicles.
Ironically, the first horseless carriage taxis in New York were electric powered at the beginning of the 1900s. T-L-C Commissioner Matthew Daus says they were taken out of service after a fire destroyed their garage, around the same time that gasoline powered vehicles were becoming popular.
