2010 Toyota Prius-III - $22,750 to start (forget about seeing any stripper version) and 50 mpgUS combined is an enticing package.
Tokyo, Japan -- Toyota, which is currently attempting to stave off a severe loss of both market volume and share within the US the past two months has supposedly booked 75,000 pre-orders in Japan for its new 2010 Prius-III according to the Japanese Nikkei Business Daily.
2010 Toyota Prius-III sales resistance in the US
Speaking with local Toyota dealerships and seeing 2010 Toyota Prius-III pre-orders already being discounted in some locales leads CleanMPG to believe the more than 60% fall-off in 2009 Prius-II sales the previous two months is not exclusively due to the 2010 Prius–III’s imminent arrival. More than likely, the US marketplace simply is unable to consume the 15,000 + units per month at $22,750 + that Toyota had projected previously.
A Toyota spokeswoman would not confirm the Nikkei report, saying the automaker had not gathered dealers' orders ahead of its scheduled launch tomorrow.
Honda’s answer for the Japanese market - the 2010 Insight-II
In this battle for hybrid supremacy, Honda’s 2010 Insight-II has been acquired by more than 20,000 Japanese customers in its first 13 weeks of availability, exceeding expectations for that market by approximately 50%.
Unfortunately, that same enthusiasm has not translated to a US marketplace success just yet as less than 4,000 units have been purchased since initial availability occurred almost 7 weeks ago. Honda projected sales to approach 7,500 vehicles per month according to estimates obtained during the Press Preview last December.
US hybrid sales potential
Considering the current US automobile marketplace malaise, reaching the early projections of 180,000, 2010 Prius-III’s and 90,000 2010 Honda Insight-II’s sold within the US during the first 12 months is highly unlikely.
