One Utah race car may make the world re-think the idea of a hybrid this weekend. Steve Pruitt's GZ09 was a big hit on the track when it ran last season. But now it boasts an electric motor to enhance performance.
The car still runs on ethanol which qualified it for the Le Mans Prototype 1 class. Manufacturers added all the off-the-shelf equipment and customized it for the car that was rebuilt after returning.
“We're the only hybrid,” said Steve Pruitt, owner of Corsa Motorsports. “Now you have a hybrid that produces 700 horsepower.”
Many people in the racing world are excited about the possibilities, much as they were when Audi took diesel technology to a new level. But Pruitt says getting all the systems working on his budget is like getting an elementary school orchestra through a basic composition.
“Your just trying to get kids to play on the same note or key. A lot of that goes on here in that you have these different systems and you need to get them to work at same time at same level.“
