2010 Honda Insight-II – $19,800 and a 41 mpgUS combined rating on the 08 EPA.
April unfortunately saw fuel efficient hybrid sales off large percentages from the same period a year ago. Under this market condition, the 2010 Honda Insight-II had its first full sales month with a slow start but is gaining momentum. Non-hybrids in general are holding above the overall market declines.
For 2010, the all-new Honda Insight-II is a distinctively styled, five-passenger, five-door hybrid powered by Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist™ (IMA™) system comprised of a 1.3-liter i-VTEC® gasoline engine and a 10-kilowatt electric motor. The Insight features the Eco Assist, an innovation that provides driver feedback further enhancing fuel economy.
The Insight's IMA system has the capability to operate exclusively on electric power in low- to mid-speed cruising conditions. It can also provide cylinder deactivation during deceleration and an idle-stop feature when the vehicle is stationary. With a 10.6-gallon fuel tank, the Insight delivers a driving range that will easily exceed 400 miles.
Standard safety features on all Insights include dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags; front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side-curtain airbag system; anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD); driver's and front-passenger's active head restraints and a front body designed to mitigate pedestrian injuries. All new Insights also feature Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, which provides improved frontal-crash compatibility between vehicles of different size and ride height.
Fuel Efficient Non-Hybrids
The “Big 7” fuel efficient non-hybrids sales saw an overall decline of 27.1 percent YTD vs. the same period in 2008. Still a smaller decline than the overall automobile market, this month for the first time, not a single vehicle escaped a sales falloff as all manufacturers experienced yet another free fall in total sales.
If there was a battle brewing, the Civic vs. Corolla is becoming a battle royale. Last year, Corolla bested the Civic for top compact sales honors but Honda is coming on strong with aggressive discounting through its many retail outlets. The Civic saw 26,252 new units delivered in April 2009, a decrease albeit a small one of 23.2 percent compared to the same period a year ago.
The Corolla followed its parent almost to a percent. April saw18,534 units sold, a decline of 42.9 percent vs. April of 2008. YTD sales were off 20.7 percent.
For the second month in a row, the Honda Fit saw a sales decrease in April with 4,115 units delivered, down 30.7 percent from April of 2008. For the year, sales are off 13.9 percent. Fit fans should expect discounts to show up soon.
The Toyota Yaris saw 8,118 units sold in April, another 29.0% decline vs. the same period a year ago. For the year, sales are off 43.9 percent.
Mini’s sales have fallen in every month so far this year. April saw sales of 3,657 vehicles, down by 22.4 percent compared to the same period a year ago. For the year, sales are off 18.2%.
Sales of the Chevrolet Aveo are in a free fall and ranks at the bottom of our non-hybrid list. This month saw sales of the Aveo at 2,158 in April, down 62.9 percent from the year ago sales period. For the year, Aveo sales are off 57.7 percent.
The Smart Fortwo was received by just 1,345 new owners in April, down an unusual 49.9 percent compared to April of 2008.

Hybrid’s
2009 Hybrid sales are in what can be described as a freefall by comparison to the overall marketplace. As April came to a close, every major hybrid reported so far saw large percentage sales declines other than the all-new Fusion and Insight-II vs. the year ago period. To place the Big 7 Hybrid sales declines into perspective, the group as a whole not including the FFH/MMH and Insight-II is off 46.9% YTD so far and literally in a free fall :(
The Toyota Prius posted April sales of 8,385, a decline of 61.5 percent vs. the April 2008 sales period. For the year, sales are off a whopping 49.0 percent. If you are looking for a deal, the 09 Prius-II will probably be discounted even further with pricing below $20,000 to clear the lots in prep for the 2010 Prius-III launch later this month.
The Toyota Camry Hybrid sales saw 2,198 vehicles sold in April, down 67.1 percent from the same period a year ago. 09 YTD, total sales are off 62.5 percent. I do not know about specific TCH discounts but with the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid now available, I suspect truly excellent deals will be plentiful no matter where in the country you are located.
The Honda Civic Hybrid posted total sales of 3,361, down 22.3 percent vs. April of 2008. This once “hot” hybrid can still be picked up for under $20K in many locations around the country.
The Honda Insight-II reported sales of 2,096 units for the month with an initial sales launch occurring just 5-weeks ago.
The HiHy saw 933 vehicles sold in April, down 63.8 percent from the same period a year ago. For 2009 YTD, total sales are off 55.6 percent.
The all-new Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrid saw April, their first full month sales reach 1,165 units with a year to date total of 1,616.
The FEH/MMH twins' saw 1,134 vehicles sold in April, down 40.5 percent from the same period a year ago. For 2009 YTD, total sales are off 34.0 percent.
The Lexus RX 400h hybrid saw 655 vehicles sold in April, down 59.7 percent from the same period a year ago. For 2009 YTD, total sales are off only 11.3 percent.
Sales of GM’s hybrids saw a total of 1,534 hybrid vehicles delivered in the month of April and 5,156 hybrids YTD.

Big 6 Manufacturers Overall
For the Monthly comparison, every manufacturer once again saw severe sales declines. Chrysler sales were down 48 percent (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21612) and compared to an already weak comparison period, they are all but toast. Toyota uncharacteristically achieved the second worst sales of the Big 6 in April falling 41 percent (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21607). Nissan sales were off 37.8 percent, GM sales were down 34 percent ( http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21610), Ford sales were down 31 percent ( http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21611) and Honda sales were off 25.3 percent ( http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21609), relatively the best of the group.
Yet another extremely poor sales month with Chrysler in bankruptcy and GM possibly ready to file.
