VIENNA - Prince Albert of Monaco made clear his environmental concerns at a meeting of the UN nuclear watchdog and told reporters he drives a hybrid car at home.

Monaco is trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are believed to cause climate change by having its buses run on bio and other alternative fuels, the prince told reporters.

Monaco was also giving incentives to private car owners "for buying an electric vehicle."

Prince Albert said he himself had energy-efficient Prius and Lexus hybrid cars and also owned an electric car, as he tried to lead by setting an example.

Prince Albert met with Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, opened a special exhibition on "Nuclear Technologies for the Environment: Protecting Air, Earth and Oceans."

Monaco provides some one million euros (1.3 million dollars) a year to help the IAEA run a marine environment laboratory (MEL) in the principality. The IAEA center was set up in 1961.

It does "research for the protection of the marine environment from radioactivity and pollution," according to a press statement.

The prince said in opening the exhibit: "The oceans and the seas are key elements in the protection of what is definitely beginning to be perceived as 'international public goods.'"

"I most appreciate the partnership which has been established between the MEL and the Monaco Scientific Center dedicated to studying the relationship between corals and their environment," the prince said.

He pointed out that Monaco planned to increase its support for the IAEA's Program of Action for Cancer Therapy (PACT), which was created in 2004 to build upon the agency's experience in radiation medicine expertise and technology.

Prince Albert said Monaco would focus its support "in the area of radiotherapy" to back "the efforts of the IAEA in its fight against the great threats of our era" and to help make an impact in developing countries.
