View Full Version : Colorado converts Prius to PHEV w/V2G using A123 lithium cells
Sledge 09-18-2006, 01:26 PM http://www.greencarcongress.com/2006/09/a123systems_plu.html
The OEMC plug-in is a PHEV30—it offers about 30 miles of all-electric range at speeds lower than 34 mph from the traction battery pack, which is built with A123Systems’s 26650 cells (the same cells as in the DeWalt 36V battery packs for power tools).
...
This OEMC PHEV Prius will also soon have Vehicle to Grid (V2G) capability. Xcel Energy and NREL will assess the collective effects of thousands of PHEVs providing power back to the grid in such a manner. Further, the study will determine the emissions profile of the car, as well as those from the greater simulated number, to make recommendations how best to incorporate these new-generation vehicles into the electrical grid.

My Insight can go >35 miles at 30 mph on the 48 volt lead acids with the 5th wheel, and is Solar recharged.

How much does their PHEV system cost?
Chuck 09-18-2006, 08:12 PM ...for my purposes, ten miles of EV on work days would be more than enough. :)
Hi Sledge:
___Nice find. I received a press release to my home E-Mail this afternoon for some reason?
___Mike, the price is ridiculous.
List price for the PHEV-30 conversion from Hybrids-Plus is $32,500. A PHEV15 conversion using a 4.5 kWh A123Systems battery pack costs $24,000. Hybrids-Plus will also supply just the kit, with the PHEV30 gear priced at $19,200, and the PHEV15 kit priced at $12,800.
___If you read the rest, a 1kW charger is included for a 9 hour charge … The HyMotion and EnergyCS Li-Ion equipped PHEV-30’s knock the hell out of this package for ~ 1/3 the price.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Sledge 09-18-2006, 10:07 PM Remember this is the Colorado state government. Thanks to corruption, greed, and incompetence, of course it would be more expensive than a PHEV done by a private company :D
Mike Dabrowski 2000 09-19-2006, 06:59 AM My Ewheel system if built in any quantity could probably cost under $3500 including batteries, and grid charger.

This is a PHEV done by a private company. HybridsPlus (http://www.hybrids-plus.com/ht/about.html) is not the Colorado state government. There is nothing from the article that says how much (if any) the Colorado state government paid for the car. The prices from the article were just the list prices from the HybridsPlus website.
Sledge 09-19-2006, 09:36 AM As long as a government entity is involved, chances are high things will go to hell. Looking at the price, it looks like business as usual :)
tigerhonaker 09-19-2006, 06:49 PM :Banane37: This reminds me of the price for the Hybrid Bus for the School System I did
in another Thread. You could drive forever on the cost of the upgrade.

These things are really an eye catcher until you see the real cost on purchasing them.
