I'm just trying to figure out where everbodys at with their new Insights.
Right now i'm getting a little above 60. I have about 1800 miles on it now and my milleage gets better as i put more miles on it. Please post expecially if you are getting better mpg, because I would like to know how to improve. Thanks

Your mileage translates to better than 3.9 liters per 100 km. That's astounding to me:

Under the best of circmumstances with our Civic Hybrid we get around 4.5 liter per 100 km (translates to 52 mpg). That's under ideal conditions. I'm happy if our around town average is under 6.0 liter per 100 km (~40 mpg).

What sort of driving are you doing, ie: flat highway in good weather, stop and go urban, etc.?

Incidentally, to convert between the two above units, divide the value into 236.5. Works both ways. That for miles per US gallon.

I drive mostly to and from work in the bitterroot valley. The drive to work is about 300 feet uphill over 32 miles. my best milleage to work is 64.1, but i don't think i went over 45. my best milleage coming home is about 75. if i don't include the huge hill i have to climb to get to my house, i got 81. It's depressing to get 81 mpg for 31 miles and then get bumped down to 75 because of the hill on the last mile. My house is on the west side of the valley about 200-300 feet above the valley floor where the highway is. I have about .5 miles of rough dirt road uphill and down to get to my house. Temperature has been about 30 to 50 degrees in the morning and about 50 to 80 coming home in the evening. on a 7 mile round trip to the hardware store and back i was able to get 75 mpg. The hill does work to my advantage because i can coast for about 1 mile when i leave the house, but of course i haven't figured out how to get the best mpg going up hill. The Insight ends up forcing charging whille i'm on the last half portion of the uphill. I have my psi at about 65 and i took the spare tire out of the back. I have not taken this Insight faster then 65 mph, and most of my driving back and forth to work is about 50. i been using rr, dwl, dwb, and i'm practicing my pusle and glide techniques. the elevation here is about 3200 ft. my choices for roads are extremly limited. there is only two highways that go north and south trough the valley and only three main exits/entrances to the valley. (the other exits are dirt logging roads.) Missoula is the biggest city around and the only one that i have tested the Insight on. It's about a 16 mile drive to missoula and i can get about 68 mpg going to town. driving around town with moderate traffic i was getting about 72. i have only had 3 fillups so far they are listed on this site. My mpg has been getting better. I have found that going slower has made me a more calm person. I think it gives me more time to enjoy the mountains and listen to my tunes. I hope that answers your questions. what conditions are you driving in?

I was thinking that i should also include some of my worse trips. I'm a volunteer firefighter/ emt and i live about 4 miles from the station. when a page goes out i'm not ussually thinking about hypermiling. i've been getting about 48-52 mpg going to the station. another time i had to follow a friend up to a party he ended up turning down a couple of wrong drive ways before we found the right one, my mpg plummeted to 42 mpg. If i'm not paying attention on my commute to work i been getting 58-60 mpg uphill and 72-74 downhill. The short trips to my friends house also have been killing the mpg. i am hoping to average about 62- 64 on this tank. i also just recently found out that i have a block heater. and i have seen a slight increase on my morning drives.

My work truck is a big chevy diesel ambulance that get about 10 mpg of course we are driving about 75 mph accelerating and braking hard and swerving in and out of traffic. We also leave it idling for long periods of time expecially in the winter.

"I hope that answers your questions. what conditions are you driving in?"

Most of the time I'm not, my wife is ;)

Our trips are usually pretty short: 5~10 km, several trips thus daily, with an hour or two sitting time. Occasionally on the weekend we get out on the highway, say for a 30km run into town and back.

I filled the tank for the first time today. It had 361 miles on it. I had driven 25 miles at 59.2mpg, 65.1 at 63.3mpg and my 16 year old daughter drove the rest. She had a couple 40 mile round trips and the rest was just around. The tank average was 45.4mpg! She had complained through the week that she was sad because the FCD average kept going down. I encouraged her to just learn to drive and we would work on the eco skills later. Sou I think the tank was very good for a new driver.

I know exactly how she feels. Last two trips my mpg has peaked in the middle and then dropped despite trying very hard. First was due to headwind and the second was due to terrain. It's very depressing. Hopefully she won't blame herself and get discouraged. It took me two years to get the hang of this, but she, being young, will probably learn it much more quickly.

I've been averaging about 52 mpg on the highway. It seems like I can get better mpg in town, for some reason. Some of my small trips (like 5-10 miles) go as far as they can on the 3-trip graph (60+mpg). I think its because I can coast and go very slow w/o making ppl too mad. My tanks have been averaging 45 or so. But I'm trying to do pulse and glide in the morning because we usually start with temps around 40-50 degrees. How are you able to get 60+ going uphill, SALIX?

i've been going really slow on the highway. I drove my 32 mile route to work with my wife in the car. She doesn't like it when I only drive 45. so i drove about 55 to sixty. I got 52.5 average for the 64 mile round trip. normally when i drive 45 i can get about 65 to 69 mpg.
Before i got my insight i would drive the speed limit and it would take me 35 minutes to drive the 32 mile to work, now i drive about 45 mph and it takes an extra 15 minutes. just a few more songs to listen to. So i think driving slower has been the key. My wife was worried that i wouldn't drive fast enough when i have to drive her to the hospital to give birth.
I also got pulled over a few days ago because the officer thought that something might be wrong with my car. I didn't get a ticket( i can ussaully avoid speeding tickets in this valley expecially if i'm wearing my ambulance uniform). on the other hand i know i avoided a speeding ticket too. see i was coming home from the bar late saturday night and i decided to take the road that goes by the school. well there is a 15 mph speed zone that goes for almost a mile so if i get my speed right i can i can coast with the ima for long periods of time. i was about halfway through the speed zone and i was doing great going the speed limit and a county sherriff pulls out of the school parking lot. It almost seemed like he was pissed that i was going the speed limit that late a night when everbody else ussually does about 35.
I also find that when i'm in a relaxed and peacful state of mind my mpg goes up dramatically. i too think that it is easier to get good mpg while driving in the city, but i think it's mostly due to the slower speed.
I also inflated my tire to 70 psi and took out extra wieght like the spare tire and jack. I took the fuse out for the daytime headlights.

Sounds like you are really getting the feel of your new car, Salix! Great numbers!

Is 70 psi the max sidewall? I wanted to inflate my tires but wasn't sure how high to go? That sounds pretty high since I remember numbers being in the 40s and such? Thanks for all the info! I notice better mpg with a relaxed state of mind, too. Lighter foot and no need to hurry. Going on a camping trip this weekend, wonder how high I can get the mpg...

max sidewall is 44. I found that my mpg has increased dramatically each time i put more air in the tires. I find the ride is comfortable on the pavement, but is really rough on the dirt. i know that the issue of tire inflation has been discussed on this site many times. i would urge you to read some of those post and make your own decission regarding what tire pressure you would feel comfortable with.

Salix, I just took a minute to look up some photos of the Bitterroot Valley, and I must say that it looks like a very beautiful area. I'd say that a small mileage penalty for driving along a dirt road sounds like a worthy price to pay for living there.
