The price is out on the table and it is evident that Toyota means business. The sticker of the 2010 Honda Insight II and the HCHII are challenged by Prius package I and Prius package II. Already with 20,000 pre-orders, I expect that number to raise exponentially.- Ed.

TORRANCE, Calif., April 21, 2009 - - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., announced manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) today for the all-new 2010 Prius midsize hybrid, scheduled to go on sale beginning in late May at Toyota dealers nationwide.

The third-generation Prius will be available in one grade with a starting MSRP of $21,000. The Prius will be offered with five levels of popular standard equipment combinations.

“The 2010 Prius delivers outstanding mileage, performance and advanced technology at a great price,” said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division.

Carter sees the most popular model starting at an MSRP of $22,000, equipped with a high level of standard features, “This model provides more than $2000 added value, including the features most buyers want, at the same price as the current base model” he said.
A new base model with a lower level of standard equipment is scheduled to be available later this year. It is designed to appeal to the most cost-conscious businesses and consumers.

Celebrated as the benchmark for cars of the future, the Prius has delivered superior fuel economy and ultra-low emissions to more than 1.2 million owners worldwide for over 10 years. When it goes on sale, the 2010 Toyota Prius will once again set new standards for innovative hybrid design and technology, raising its level of convenience features and performance to new heights, including EPA fuel economy estimates of 51 mpg city, 48 mpg highway and 50 mpg combined (EPA MPG estimates, actual mileage will vary).

The third-generation 2010 Prius will offer enhanced performance and innovative design features. It will be quieter, roomier, and equipped with advanced standard and available features such as four driving modes, steering wheel touch controls that display on the instrument panel, a moonroof with solar panels, and Intelligent Parking Assist (IPA).

The Prius is equipped with Toyota’s industry-leading Hybrid Synergy Drive and certified as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV), emitting over 70 percent fewer smog-forming emissions than the average new vehicle. A larger and more powerful yet more efficient 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder engine produces 98 horsepower at 5,200 rpm. Together with its electric motor the hybrid system in the new Prius will generate a combined net horsepower of 134, an increase of 24 horsepower over the previous generation.

All Prius models offer Toyota’s Star Safety System™ as standard equipment, which includes enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) Systems, Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). Other standard features include electric power steering and four-wheel disc brakes.

Starting fall 2009, select Prius models will include Toyota’s all-new telematics service, Safety Connect™, which will offer four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance. Safety Connect will be available by subscription, with an included one-year trial subscription.

Adding to the appeal of Prius is an additional array of standard convenience features on most models that include automatic air conditioning equipped with an electric air compressor; AM/FM/MP3 CD player with six-speakers and satellite radio capability; driver door Smart Key system with Push Button Start and remote illuminated entry; a Multi-Informational Display with an energy monitor and fuel consumption history; six-way adjustable driver seat; power door locks; auto up/down on all windows with window jam protection; cruise control; tilt/telescopic adjustable steering wheel with audio and HVAC controls; color-keyed foldable power heated side mirrors; dual sun visors with vanity mirrors; and tonneau cover.

Prius also brings many new firsts to the Toyota lineup. To help increase fuel efficiency, the 1.8-liter engine is beltless, uses an electric water pump, a new exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, and an exhaust heat collection system.

Other Toyota firsts include a new Touch Tracer Display, which features touch sensors on the steering wheel switches that are designed to reduce driver eye movement for better concentration on the road; an available sliding glass moonroof is packaged with solar panels that power a new ventilation system; a remote air-conditioning system functions on battery-power alone, and allows remote operation so the driver can cool the interior temperature for comfort before getting in the car.

Also new to Toyota is an available Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system that uses advanced millimeter wave radar. The system also enables Lane Keep Assist, which helps the driver stay safely within the lane, and the Pre-Collision System, which retracts seatbelts and applies the brakes in certain conditions when a crash is unavoidable.
Base MSRPs do not include a delivery, processing, and handling (DPH) fee of $750. The DPH fee for vehicles distributed by Southeast Toyota (SET) and Gulf States Toyota (GST) may vary.

Seeing as how my Insight I put a deposit on is August is "lost in space," I'm thinking I may need to visit a Toyota dealer now! I'm VERY impressed.

I just talked to Kacey and they were just passed by a semi loaded with Insights and 1 F150. I think he is in the wrong direction for you anyway. The one we ordered didn't make it in either for my daughter's birthday. They got one from a dealer in TN for us though.

A Prius IV with Nav is about $800 more than I paid for my 2005 Prius with Nav and it is much better equipped, aside from the MPG increase and better ride. Toyota really did well with the pricing.

So the base Prius (when it comes out) will be the same price as the Insight EX.

What differences would be to make the Prius worth the cost? Or are the base I options not out yet?

Those options have not been publicized yet. We're all in the dark on that one!

Just a guess, but:
No smart key
No cruise
No power windows/locks

You seriously think they are going to put window cranks in a Prius?

Prius IV MSRP: $25,800

In addition to Prius III features:
Three-door Smart Key system

I have the "three-door Smart Key system" on my 2007 Prius, and it is very nice!

I never have to take the key out of my pocket. I open the hatch without getting the key out. I don't even have to take the key out to lock the car, I just push the rubber button on either door to lock the car.

Considering how slow the assembly lines for other cars must be running wouldn't it be possible to see parts taken from other cars to make the base Prius?

Manual window rollers from the Corolla.
Basic wipers from the Corolla.
Key starter swapped into power button spot? (Now that one would be a laugh and perhaps require Priuschat to change the push button motto!)

Check out this NYT blog (http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/21/toyota-announces-prius-pricing/), but esp. the comments....what a well-informed, rational public.

Greenrider, I live in Iowa City, and there are four Insights (two LX, two EX) just sitting on the dealer's lot as of yesterday (4/21), if you're still interested in one...

Just waiting for the first one off the boat. And to see the "roaming gnome" in Madison in July.

I bet half of the $1k reduction for Prius I trim will be in steel wheels. Maybe a lesser stereo with 4 speakers for the rest? No way they will mold unique door panels to fit crank windows to. And most of the high tech features are similar--it would not be cost-effective to replace them with conventional for a low-volume trim line, as most would require different dashes.

But mainly, I think Toyota will make this work by simply not selling more than a handful of the Prius I trim... I tried a few years ago to get a stripped-down FJ Cruiser at the advertised $23k price and there were zero in the western half of the US or en route to the west coast. This will be the same deal. Maybe if you order one and wait 6 months, you'll get one, and maybe not. But, thankfully I didn't do that with the FJ! I had an old FJ-40 and was temporarily nostalgic, but what gas hogs both the new and old FJs are. I really like Toyota products but am less impressed with how hard it is to get a basic model--one reason I went with Scion, which was a completely stress-free buying experience... weird since the dealers share the same parking lot.

:D No, I just wondered what kind of comments about "no power windows." It will be interesting to see what will be shaved for another $1K.

I'd be amazed it would be worth the trouble to put window cranks or manual door locks in the base model, but I could see them leaving out the cruise control (as did Honda on the I-II LX) and the keyless entry. Maybe again like Honda, they'll leave out some of the other stuff taken for granted these days, like seatback pockets, vanity mirrors, map lights. Maybe no USB port on the stereo -- that seems a common tactic these days to try to force consumers to upgrade.

They probably won't put window cranks in. I heard somewhere that it actually is lighter to use electric windows than cranks.

That's why the original Insight went with electric windows.

I didn't know Toyota had started using USB ports, I didn't see any on the Prius Priority demos or on the Press demo at the Auto Show
