A national delivery service is taking major steps to cut pollution and improve fuel use.

About 150 people gathered last Friday at the UPS facility on Aurora's far East Side as the delivery giant showcased one of seven hydraulic hybrid trucks the company has been working with the Environmental Protection Agency to develop during the last two years.

Among those in attendance was U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert, who applauded the collaboration between UPS and the EPA. Maintaining an emphasis on alternative energies is even more crucial now that gas prices have gone down and people are less worried about high fuel costs, Biggert said.

Only the phrase "Low Emission Hydraulic Hybrid," posted along the truck's side indicated its innards were any different than the 94,500 vehicles UPS operates around the world. But they are. Instead of running solely off gasoline, the truck is also fueled with the help of a hydraulic engine.

In the simplest terms, that means energy is stored in an accumulator and sent directly to the part of the car that sets the wheels in motion -- as opposed to an electric hybrid, which stores energy in a battery and then sends it to an electric motor that powers the wheels.

Because the energy doesn't pass through an electric motor, hydraulic hybrids are more efficient than electric hybrids. While both types of hybrids get energy from the... http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/beaconnews/news/1534580,2_1_AU20_HYBRID_S1.article
