2010 Toyota Prius-III – Possibly just $20,750 to start and an EPA combined rating of 50 mpgUS.
Tokyo, Japan -- According to a story in the Japan Neikki this evening, Toyota is anticipating 40,000 advance orders for the all-new 2010 Toyota Prius (http://www.nni.nikkei.co.jp/e/ac/tnks/Nni20090414D14JFA02.htm) by this time next month. Currently, over 20,000 pre-orders have been written at Toyota sales outlets across the country with one month to go before its actual public release. The pre-orders booked have already overtaken last month’s spectacular launch of the 2010 Honda Insight-II which was received by over 18,000 new owners in Japan during its first month of availability. That sales number far exceeded Honda’s own internal preliminary demand figure of just 5,000 units.
As we have been reporting all month, Toyota is preparing to go head-to-head with Honda on a price basis by taking a somewhat unusual step of possibly offering the previous generation Prius-II with a $3,000 plus discount from its current price to closely follow the 2010 Honda Insight-II's price while offering the new 2010 Prius-III at a rumored very attractive price upon its initial release.
Rumors of the well equipped 2010 Toyota Prius-III starting at just 2.05 Million Yen ($20,705 USD) vs. the current Prius-II’s starting price of 2.33 Million Yen ($23,533 USD) abound and if so, expect Toyota to take back the momentum that Honda’s $1.89 Million Yen ($19,082 USD) 2010 Honda Insight-II achieved in the past 6-weeks and do so without apology.
