Tom and Gretchen Reinsma ordered the car in December 2008, and were apparently lucky to even have one within five months, according to Bill Redeker of Redeker Ford.
"The Reinsma's may be one of the first people in Michigan to have one," Redeker said, "because it's so early and everybody wants one."
Tom Reinsma said they were looking to purchase an American-made car with good gas mileage from a local dealer.
The best way to get a Ford Fusion Hybrid, which starts at $27,270, is to order one, because cars requested for a specific customers always come before requests for showroom models, Redeker said.
It may be another six months before the demand cools down enough so that all the cars aren't spoken for before they're even built.
But Tom Reinsma still hadn't ridden in the car as of Tuesday afternoon — 24 hours after they picked it up. Even with a slick new car, the local lawyer plans to continue to bike the mile from his home to the Scholten Fant office.
"I'm going to keep biking as much as I can," he said.
Gretchen Reinsma will drive the car to her job as a reading room teacher at Griffin Elementary. As long as she stays under 47 mph, she'll be able to stay on... http://www.grandhaventribune.com/paid/294203154860626.bsp
