Some geoengineering ideas here (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17632436)
Washington - Tinkering with Earth's climate to chill runaway global warming — a radical idea once dismissed out of hand — is being discussed by the White House as a potential emergency option, the president's new science adviser said Wednesday.
That's because global warming is happening so rapidly, John Holdren told The Associated Press in his first interview since being confirmed last month.
The concept of using technology to purposely cool the climate is called geoengineering. One option raised by Holdren and proposed by a Nobel Prize-winning scientist includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun's rays.
Using such an experimental measure is only being thought of as a last resort, Holdren said.
"It's got to be looked at," he said. "We don't have the luxury ... of ruling any approach off the table.".... http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hm1kMpA2nQALOfQL8Y8PxxTHNVtgD97EI0LO1
Elixer 04-09-2009, 02:58 AM Geoengineering at this point is not something we should be thinking about. There is still significant evidence that human caused global warming is not occurring (something I personally don't agree with, but I think everyone needs to remain open-minded). There are also theories that global warming will lead quickly to a ice age. In any case we should not be messing with such a large natural process which we do not fully understand.
bnther 04-09-2009, 06:46 AM How arrogant are we?!!
First of all, it's worth noting that this is an international issue and not just for the current American administration.
Secondly, we could not be anymore wrong about tampering with things we do not fully understand. I believe that the climate can fix itself if we would simply stop adding toxins to the atmosphere. But in true American fashion, we're going to add more impurities to the situation into order to fix things. That's like taking on seven trillion dollars worth of debt to fix a broke economy.
Call me narrow minded or even old fashioned but the only choice I can agree with, in order to get out of a problem like the environment issue, is to stop doing things that I think may be contributing to the problem. Just like there is only way to fix my own personal debt and that is to spend less than what I'm earning.
My 2 cents
chilimac02 04-09-2009, 07:08 AM LOL, I had this on my blog with that same picture!! www.otecology.blogspot.com
that is stinking hilarious!
BTW, unless we're sure about the effects of launching pollutants into the upper atmosphere, I'm against it. He clearly said that the effects are not completely known.
Psion 04-09-2009, 07:35 AM I'm all for further research of the geothermal characteristics of the earth, but this "global warming" thing has got to go. We're experiencing a large number of cold snaps and snow fall, and only 6 hurricanes are predicted for this year.
Doesn't sound like global warming to me.
WoodyWoodchuck 04-09-2009, 08:15 AM It is not called Global Warming anymore. The PC catch phrase of the day is Climate Change.
jkp1187 04-09-2009, 08:41 AM Hey - wasn't the whole "scorching the sky" idea used in The Matrix?
And I am firmly against the arrogant notion that we can alter the Earth at will. We suffer today (relatively speaking) from unintended consequences of actions Humanity took in the past with no intention of altering the environment. I shudder to think what sort of consequences we would suffer from after a deliberate attempt to alter the global environment.
Earthling 04-09-2009, 01:14 PM Brainstorming ideas on how to deal with global warming is a good thing. Any action would have to be very carefully considered. Inaction might be the worst thing.
This is still in the brainstorming stage, so let the ideas rip.

PS: one good volcanic eruption might do more than these guys ever could. If the Yellowstone Supervolcano blows, those of us who survive the ash cloud will be huddled together trying to avoid frostbite and starvation...

Quite so.
Which is why action is often the worst thing imaginable when attempted on a macro scale.
