Well, logically, moving forward means not very many things will stay the same. -- Ed.

Now it's my turn: the U.S. automobile industry is not done losing jobs, will continue--with a few minor fluctuations--to lose jobs from now until our planet goes dark, and every dollar spent reviving it is better spent on either alternative forms of automobile design and manufacturing (which still won't save jobs, but if mandated as part of the bail-out may save the firms, their employees, and some related transition costs) or some other industry (which will create different, but still fewer overall, jobs). Get used to it.

Why are auto industry jobs gone forever? Here are a few old-fashioned, industry-specific reasons...

1) We have actually been buying fewer cars per person in this country since about 1990 (and need fewer still).

2) Cars have been getting better at a rate faster than we've been replacing them.

3) We're not suddenly going to start making crappier cars out of shoddier materials with worse methods than today.

4) The rest of the world is likely to do a much better job at car-making in the future (certainly comparatively and possibly absolutely).
