My brother-in-law just got a Rabbit 5spd as mentioned. He's obviously interested in getting more than 29mpg on the highway. Do you guys have some tips, other than me getting him a scangauge :)

Also, what kind of mileage are the rest of you getting in your VW rabbit?

Lots of highway travel means a grill block will be well worth his efforts.

On the highway, pulse and glide works really well (even with the engine on). I can usually get about 40-45 mpg on the highway between 65-55 mph in my MkV Jetta (same platform as the Rabbit).

Wow, that's really good jhu. I have yet to beat 36mpg (at 55-65mph speeds) on a tank in my gas Jetta. I'm sure I get 40+ at lower speeds, but I never do that kind of driving for an entire tank.

Of course I've had a broken thermostat for a few months, causing the engine to run cold, and our gas is E10 year round, but even with P&Ging and without those problems I can't imagine getting quite as high as 40-45mpg at "true" highway speeds. When you're doing P&G, how hard are you pulsing and over what range of speed?

Well, I try to do mostly highway driving. To that end, I drive a bicycle for most of my city trips. On the highway, it's usually 65-55 or 60-50.

It takes a bit of experimenting to find a productive high speed P&G regimen. My car is only rated 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Steady 55 mph cruise control gets me about 38-40 mpg. High speed P&G gets me about 44 mpg.

I aim for 85-90 LOD on pulses from 52-65 mph. Other P&G deltas (e.g. 52-62 mph) didn't do as well. My wife's AT Elantra can't beat steady speed cruise control with any high speed P&G regimen.

I try to pulse at 75 LOD. It works pretty well so far. I've tried NICE-off P&G but it's way too much effort for not enough gain on the highway unless the glide is sufficiently long (20+ seconds at least).

I don't do P&G with my 5sp, but I found that I can keep myself between 50 and 60 mph while keeping the load between 23 and 30. My average highway milage (including the warm-up) on a 20 mile trip ends up being in the 38's.

Hope this helps with some additional information.

He should put his tire pressure at max sidewall, of course. This should allow 125% x highway mpg, or about mid-30's mpg without P&G.

You easily get into the 40s with P&G.
