View Full Version : Insight Marathon Attempt: Sept. 25 - Oct. 4, 2006
Hi All:
___We are a go for the last week of Sept. through the first week of October in and around the town of Tonkawa, Oklahoma.
___As it stands, here are the participants in alphabetical order by their online nicks.
Bill Kinney (Billy) out of WA. - A 20 year hypermiler going all the way back to the days of a CRX and continuing through his third Insight in almost as many years. Not only has he seen south of a 105 mpg tank this year, I think the following should give you all the details one needs to see ;)
http://www.cleanmpg.com/garage/images/60.png (http://www.cleanmpg.com/index.php?page=garage&displayunits=MPG(US)&viewcar=60)
Justin Fons (Citrus Insighter) out of WI. - At the ripe old age of 16 years, he was the first 16 year old in the world to achieve a 100 mpg segment in a mass produced automobile. Namely, his 2000 Honda Insight. Since that time, he has not only aged 1 year, he has steadily improved to the point of taking the highest FE from a non-modded Insight at the HF2006 FE Challenge nailing down 117.2 mpg over that 20 mile segment! He will be accompanied out by his father Bradlee who some may know as the leader of the Milwaukee Hybrid Group (http://www.milwaukeehybridgroup.com/) and promoter of Hybrids everywhere.
Randall Burkhalter (Highwater) out of OK. - Not to long an Insight owner but currently holds the Honda Insight - World record distance on a tank of fuel. 1534.2 miles! (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1898) Not including the fact he nailed down 114.2 mpg on that same tank! He currently has the second or third highest lmpg in the entire world but will soon be at the top.
Dan Kroushl (Krousdb) out of PA. - The list of accolades would fill this page but here are just a few … First person on the planet to figure out how to take the Prius II to 100 + mpg’s sustained. Had the highest running average of all the participants at the Prius Marathon Attempt last year somewhere in the 113 - 114 mpg range over hundreds of miles driven. Second highest tank distance ever recorded in a Prius II (Prius Marathon Attempt) 110.03 mpg after 1,397 miles. TDS 2006 Co-driver and Grand Champion. HF2006 Prius II co-winner of the Prius II entrants with 2 others that achieved > 99.9 per the Prius II FCD’s. His was SG-I connected showing 115.x mpg’s over the 20 mile course and by far the fastest time of all 3. Hybrid and non-hybrids alike have not stood in his way for reaching maximum FE no matter the vehicle.
Brian Hardegen (NEmystic) out of MA. - A long time Insight enthusiast going back many years. He has not only exceeded 100 mpg’s in his own 2001 Insight many times, he won the TDS 2005 event! Although he will not be a direct participant, he will be our behind the scenes support.
Louis Hudgin (Sno779) out of AZ. - After he found out what the Insight was capable of, he was the fourth person in the world to have achieved a sustainable 150.0 + mpg segment in one. Another is that he is only the third person to have achieved > 1,500 miles on a single tank of fuel (1,520.2 miles @ 112.2 mpg) in a mass produced automobile - that being his 2000 Honda Insight of course and from his last tank!
Doug Schaefer (Tochatihu) out of CA. – A long time hybrid enthusiast with an education and resume that would fill this page. He is also the first person to successfully achieve a 100 mpg sustained segment in a Prius I that I know of. He has also made the elevation maps for every hybrid event I have been involved with. Just like Brian, he has already helped with the behind the scenes support and will continue through the event whenever he is available. The maps below were created by him from directions given by Randall.
Wayne Gerdes (xcel) out of IL. - I don’t really have any stats worth mentioning but the following pic is what started the whole idea as well as what we are attempting to achieve … take the distance traveled and multiply by 100 anyway :D
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/530/First_150_0_mpg_segment_in_a_Honda_Insight.jpg
___I have invited Teddy-Girl out of Japan though Yoshi but that would be a long shot as far as the ability for her to get the time off and then to fly over. Her most recent tank in her own Prius II set the world on fire with the following: World record distance on a single tank for a Prius II - Japan - July 4 - Aug 16, 2006. ( http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1793) Less then a year after the Prius Marathon attempt and she takes all of us that participated in that event down just traveling back and forth to work with a stunning 1,455.9 miles at 112.2 mpg!
___There is another young lady who will be contacted this week to see if she would like to take part but it may be another long shot? Louis will keep us informed as to her ability to participate or not …
___If you have any questions, feel free to ask. With the ability to sustain 150.0 mpg’s discovered, holding the same through an entire tank might be impossible but with 14.0 gallons of fuel and maybe 143 mpg’s sustained, we have a shot at taking a 2001 Honda Insight to beyond 2,000 miles on a single tank of fuel. At least that is what is the goal.
___And here are those maps of the course and the elevations … Nice, flat, and out of the way as far as any of us could have imagined … Thank you again Doug!

___Currently, Louis, Randall, and I will start the course setup on Monday. We may even start driving then depending on what time we arrive on Monday? We will definitely begin the “Attempt” by Tuesday morning (weather permitting) and run 12 + hour days through mostly daylight hours. We should have ~ 900 miles behind us by the time Justin and Bradlee arrive early Thursday morning. With a few hours of course orientation, we should have Justin behind the wheel by mid-Thursday. We are planning to have completed 1,000 - 1,200 miles when both Billy and Dan arrive. Bradlee will probably be using the Accord as a mule to bring them back from the local airport(s) for course orientation and Insight specific training in Justin or Bradlee’s Insight. You don’t want to know how far the airports are away from the course ;) With that, we will begin our around the clock driving schedule starting Friday evening with all of us swapping out every 1.5 - 2 hours until she fuel starves sometime Sunday. We will have a much better understanding of the Insight’s capabilities (FE and approximate distance until empty) and what kind of weather we will be facing as the initial launch approaches as well as where we stand on or around Friday night when the around the clock driving begins. For a std. storm, we will be pulling off the course at our hotel and plugging in the Insight’s block heater until the storm has passed and the roads have begun to dry. After that, the marathon will continue until the inevitable fuel starvation sometime on Sunday … We hope ;)
___Some might ask why and my reply is as follows. This was the Insight’s last year of production and she will be departing with the accolades she most certainly deserves if any of us have something to say about it. Again, she is the FE king without question the world over and we are going to find out just how far she can be taken with a little luck and some of the best hypermilers in the US and possibly Japan behind her windscreen.
___Good Luck

Tochatihu 09-07-2006, 05:41 PM Why lookee there, I plug the maps in and they show up here! So did I get the course right? The vertical exaggeration is about 425 X. There is a 1000 foot climb though
TopoUSA shows a big oil field (probably pretty well emptied by now) that you guys will be...endlessly...circling. There must be some sort of cosmic significance to that.
As far as other scenery to be viewed during the 2k miles, all I can say is that youse guys have taken it to a whole new 'level'.
Wishing you dry pavement, light winds, and 'Godslow'.
DAS
Hi Tochatihu:
___Those elevation maps of yours always scare me :D
___The thing I like about this one except for that 100’ over 1 mile climb @ the ~ 7 mile marker is it is only 125’ max elevation change over the entire 38 miles! Those short and steep guys sure do give back nicely on the long drawn out slopes afterwards! I cannot wait to see what this course is like in the flesh … Randall should be back to you with any corrections that may be needed ASAP.
___Billy just E-mailed me that he will be arriving on Friday into Wichita so we will plan for his pick up and arrival late Friday night. He is also nailing down 150 + mpg segments at will while driving his own Insight in 90 degree temps. He should have few to no adjustments other then becoming acclimated to the course and then getting behind the wheel and doing his thing!
___“Godslow” will certainly be the order of the day ;)
___Good Luck and Doug, thanks again as always.

tarabell 09-07-2006, 06:05 PM How many miles is it going once around the circuit?
Hi Tarabell:
___It appears to be 38.31 miles RT? I know Randall was speaking about a 47 mile course and crossing under I-35 a few times (shown to the far left) a few weeks ago so Doug may yet have a few corrections to perform later on with an updated Road map and Topo …

psyshack 09-07-2006, 10:11 PM I will be around... Cant miss this!!!! Its in my back yard!!!!!
efusco 09-08-2006, 12:02 AM Just about 300 miles away from me...may see if I can sneak down for some photo ops and any other support I can offer for a day or two.
lakedude 09-08-2006, 02:04 AM My vacation was to start after today. Some things are going on at work that might make it better for everyone if that vacation was delayed a couple of weeks. It looks like I might be able to make it after all. I'm wondering if a mid summer attempt would be hotter/better? Certainly the end of September would be more comfortable.....
If you need a driver please let me know as far in advance as possible. Otherwise I'll just try and make it out to finally meet all you world class drivers.
highwater 09-08-2006, 02:23 AM Doug, the map looks great. A minor technicality; that is actually the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River, in dumps into the Arkansas just off the map to the east about 3 miles.
The map course is right. We will not be doing anything on I35. That "widow maker" hill going south through the Three Sands oil field, is the one I will be working on, to try to find the best technique for climbing it, FE wise. It is part of my south bound commute, so I can work on it every night. This is the hill I ran her dry on, doing that recent record tank attempt. I have been around the course once, for FE trials, but it was raining that weekend. I will work on it again this weekend, even if it rains again, I guess.
I could have sworn the odo said 48 miles, but it looks like the map is telling us 38, hmmm?
I'll check it out again during this weekends trials.
Randall
lakedude 09-08-2006, 02:46 AM At which hotel are you all going to be staying?
HCHCIN 09-08-2006, 08:18 AM Fifty-two (or more) laps in rural Oklahoma? Hope you guys have XM Radio or something. Getting 150 MPG is exciting, but I personally would need some outside stimulation. --RN
msantos 09-08-2006, 10:05 AM Darn. I really would like to be there but it is too far for me. I'll have to take one of those squint-to-see audience seats.
Good luck, I know you guys will actually do it.
By the way, will there be some kind of a "press release"?
Cheers;
MSantos
Hi Lakedude:
___If Teddy-Girl cannot make it and Louis cannot get a hold of Marsha, you are most certainly welcome to join as we PM’ed a few weeks ago. Brian still might be coming out and it will get a bit crowded if he did. I hope you understand … With another driver starting earlier in the week however, we could possibly start off on Wednesday for around the clock driving stints? I will let you know by the weekend if you are still willing?
___MSantos, Randall has some media contacts in OK. that might be interested in picking this up and I will be speaking to Eric on how to get the news out to the media directly instead of indirectly like we are now. Before the Prius Marathon Attempt, I was in contact with a lady from HBO Films who just so happened to be doing a special on Global Warming and needed a segment on hybrid cars. That one could not have worked out more perfectly. Dave Bassage was the guy who released the news to the media but I am not sure exactly how or what he did.
___HCHCIN, just imagine a scene from “Dances with Wolves” showing miles and miles of nothing ... I hope? Although I am not going to discourage the use of Randall’s radio, XM out there would be the perfect passenger/companion!

psyshack 09-08-2006, 07:29 PM I took thursday and friday off. Its day trips for me to be at the event. Im looking forward to meeting the best in the game!
As for the country. Its vast and basicly wide open. I will be suprised if theres not some wind. After all it is Okiehoma and rolling plains if you will. :)
The lay of the land is such that when going north its basicly uphill. The leg going south should be slightly downhill. When heading west it is basicly going up hill over all. And east more or less downhill. Your basicly on the southern edge of the great plains. It rolls along and meanders very well.
For something to do? Not much. Maybe ride a pump jack, harrases a combine, or go over to woolarock on the other side of Ponca City and see if Buffalo like Insights or hate them. Buffalo hating on Insights would not be good for a Insight.
Im looking forward to the event. :woot:
hobbit 09-08-2006, 07:53 PM Run trials with a GPS; they seem to log a really accurate mileage.
I was cross-checking all kinds of route planning down to the
hundredth mile with the thing this year... the routing software
package on the PC that came with my Garmin unit seems to exactly
match when I go out and drive the segments. Take two GPSes
through the loop to be sure.

i hope there are some videos of the driver this time ;) man its going to be tough driving in that course over and over again... that's a lot of laps :)

efusco 09-10-2006, 10:13 PM OMG! I'm falling asleep just looking at the photos...how will you ever stay awake driving!?
efusco 09-10-2006, 10:25 PM Evan,
It would be great to see you there. Will you be bringing the Prius or the HiHy?
I'd bring the Prius most likely. It's looking doubtful I'll make it though...I'm off for 2 days, but I work until midnight the day before my first day off then have to be at work by 7am by the morning after my second day off....It would be 12 hours of driving for maybe 12 hours of 'on scene' time....we'll see.
Chuck 09-10-2006, 11:15 PM I might be able to stop by, but wanted to get an idea of the itenary. Don't want to just pop up in the middle of a run...
While I'll be closer than most, it's still about six hours from Dallas.
Might want to contact a local station to see if they report this....
OMG! I'm falling asleep just looking at the photos...how will you ever stay awake driving!?
Hi Efusco:
___You would have loved to be on the receiving end of over 13 MB of pics to process, upload, and post too ;) I think that just about documents the course. Randall will probably update me with a few details later …
___Our plan right now is to do a single lap and swap drivers every 1 - 1.5 + hours to keep most everyone fresh through the night shifts ... Those roads sure are desolate though. I thought I only saw maybe 10 cars through all of the pics with some way off in the distance. I know at least 3 of the automobiles counted were the same minivan!
___I dread the hot weather Randall and Psy have to deal with in the summer (I assume you live in one of the southern states as well?), but oh how I love the wide open expanses. We just don't see that around here :(
___If you can make it up, I am sure Dan would love to do a P&G clinic with you. I know you have experienced a bout of P&G on your own (I am sure you do it all the time too ;)) but a ride with Dan is always a pleasure given he drives his own Prius II in a P&G almost seamlessly. And at a good clip too!

lakedude 09-15-2006, 02:53 AM Any updates?
Hi Lakedude:
___Because of the way we ride the 12V and the fact temps for night shift driving are expected to be in the 50’s, we have moved our driving segments to an all day shift schedule. Louis, Randall, and I will be driving continuously for at least 12 hours/day Monday through Wednesday, Justin will start an every other shift driving schedule on Thursday and Friday w/ Randall, Louis, and I alternating between each of his segments, and Dan and Bill alternating on Saturday and Sunday with Justin possibly taking a final shift of the evening on both days.

highwater 09-22-2006, 04:45 AM Looks like the participants have made their travel plans, so lets bump this thread.
I believe it was Chuck that asked about where the motel was.
Far northern Oklahoma, I35, exit 214.
This is US 60 to Ponca City, Pond Creek, and Tonkawa.
Motel is on the west side of I35, south side of 60.
There is a restaurant and travel services at this exit, as well as RV parking/hookups.
Tonkawa is 3 miles to the east.
The weather looks to be good for the marathon, with only Wednesday showing a 20% chance of rain, currently; However, seven days out is about all the forecast we can look at. Temps forecast to be 75/80ish. Wind has been howling lately. I hope we get a break from all the fronts that have been marching through.
A bit of fluff:
It was September 16, 1893, that "other pioneers" lined up on the Kansas Border, for what was the largest of the 5 Oklahoma Land Runs. Perhaps that same spirit is returning to the area next week.
We will be circling the 3 Sands Oil Field. This is one of the old historic oil fields, from the first boom days. It has gone through an extensive upgrade of late, and is again productive. From the highest elevation on the route, just on the north side of Marland, you can see the Conoco refinery in Ponca City, only a few miles away. This area is where one of the early oil tycoons E.W. Marland made (and lost) his fortune. He sold out to what is now Conoco. The Marland Mansion in Ponca City is quite a site in these parts.
Although it will be some years before the Insight disappears from the road; I believe that Sept. 2006 is/was the final production of the Honda Insight. Fitting that this marathon FE attempt, is this month; don’t you think?
Randall
lakedude 09-22-2006, 05:33 AM Alright what is the hotel name? and what day do you want me to show up? I wanna meet Dan and he is showing up late correct?
Chuck 09-22-2006, 10:30 AM I need to know the hotel name as well and if pooling in is an option.
We may be in Oklahoma, but I don't think we qualify as Sooners (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sooners) :D
Warning: The OU vs Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_River_Shootout) game is on Oct 7 - don't wear orange.
highwater 09-22-2006, 02:21 PM The place is: New Western Inn
I35 and US 60
Tonkawa, OK 580-628-2577
Naw, Chuck; orange won't hurt in northern OK. We're only ~50 miles from Stillwater, home of OSU (Oklahoma Orange).
GO POKES!!!
P.S. That's if the print is real small on the shirt.:D
Randall
Chuck 09-22-2006, 02:45 PM Randall,
Dallas/Fort Worth has a sports writer (Randy Galloway) that refers to the Longhorns as "the whiney orange" since they could not deal with failure well (until this last January....but "Superman" is now playing for the Tennessee Titans). He is old and can't see that well, so he looks at the football helments at the team from Norman, Oklahoma and call them "Zero U".
Disclaimer: like The Pope, this quote does not reflect my personal opinion. :D
Hi Lakedude:
___Dan and Bill will be arriving late next Friday night.
___Chuck, I hope to see you there as well!

Chuck 09-22-2006, 09:49 PM I'll be there, but it will be Saturday - not Friday.
lakedude 09-23-2006, 01:38 AM Saturday = Saturday the 30th correct?
You all don't need me early to drive correct?
I might stay in Tulsa Friday night (29th) and drive out early Saturday the 30th.
Keep my number in case you need me earlier. I can make it out in just a few hours.
Tochatihu 09-23-2006, 10:32 AM Here is a link for longer-term forecasts:

Might need to work back to the root directory, but the GFS model is the one that seems to have the longest predictive window. This is not to say that its accuracy is especially good. About all we can say now is that OK will probably be dry for at least the first few days of this exciting scenic drive.

PS: :bananahuge: <- fascinating; absolutely fascinating
tarabell 09-23-2006, 01:33 PM Thinking about this and got a few more questions:
What are the strategies for switching drivers? I’m assuming you are coming to full stops for every driver change? ;) Will you always switch drivers at the same place on the circuit, or take advantage of the (small) elevation changes? Does it make a difference who will drive the daylight and nighttime shifts in terms of temps?
highwater 09-23-2006, 01:58 PM tarabell,
We plan on switching drivers within the town of Tonkawa. There is a nice long downhill although not steep at all. It will give us at least enough forward momentem to skip 1st gear. I originally thought we might do this upstream from the only stop light, but it might be difficult to time the light without much speed, so we might move the driver switch point downstream of the stoplight.
We probably will run only daylight, for the first half of the week. Then we may have to do some headlight hours. Take ~2100 miles, at the low avg speed of ~25mph, and figure 12hrs of daylight, and we are pushing it at 7 days. Add in the down time for switching drivers and dash pics, and there's not any daylight left. As far as who will/should drive the headlight hours.......don 't know.
Hi All:
___The first setback of the event just occurred and it probably will not be the first … I just received a call from Louis (Sno779) who is currently about 200 miles out of Phoenix on State Route 87 and Route 60 in northern AZ. His Insight just threw an IMA code of death while climbing the mountains so it appears as if Randall and I will be going it alone from Sunday through Thursday. He will possibly be staying at a relatives within 30 miles of his present location tonight and will try and limp his ride back home tomorrow. I told him to pull the positive lead off the 12V and reset everything but I doubt that will fix anything.
___I am finishing last minute details here at home before heading out myself but this is going to get interesting ;)
___Good Luck

Chuck 09-23-2006, 09:43 PM I'm getting confused - is Lewis in our out?
I'd think the dreaded IMA light would have wiped him out unless it was really something else....

tigerhonaker 09-24-2006, 03:22 PM Hi All:
:Banane37: Wayne drove 830 Miles to Destination in OK. from Chicago. He is at the Hotel
in OK. waiting for the others to arrive.
Terry (Tiger)
highwater 09-25-2006, 07:41 AM Well, here we are at day one.
I am going to leave with the Insight, shortly after daybreak and meet up with Watne and Louis at the course. We will top off the fuel at that point, and begin the marthon. The rest of the week, the Insight will stay at the motel , which is much closer to the course than I am.
Weather looks pretty good for the week, and this morning is clear, no wind, mid 40'sF.
Thanks to those "offsite" folks who are watching the weather, and posting the forecasts.
We went through a breif training drive last night in the Insight, just to let Wayne and Louis, get some time in my Insight, pre-attempt.
Wayne has my laptop, and I think he is working on another thread now that we have made it to the starting line. I'm sure he will link from here.
I'm ready to get this thing started, and looking forward to later in the week when others will arrive.
Randall
tigerhonaker 09-25-2006, 08:07 AM :Banane37: Randall, thanks for the update this morning. We here on the side lines love
reading from here what is taking place there on your end. Nothing like the Laptop to keep everyone up to date from your location in OK. Look forward to hearing each days event for the Day's Miles and FE.
For those New Comers, 1-Tank of Gas and 2,000 Miles is what is taking place:
Oh, Best-of-Luck from all of us at CleanMPG :woot:
Terry (tiger)
dcoyne78 09-25-2006, 09:55 AM Good luck everyone! You are aiming for about 140+ MPG, is that correct? What speed range gives the optimum MPG for the Insight, Wayne had mentioned 900 miles over 24 hours which would be an average speed (including stops) of 37.5 mph, elsewhere someone estimated 25 mph (which may take the 37.5 mph when travelling and then adjusted down somewhat to account for driver switching and photos). Just curious as I have never driven an Insight and do not know what speeds are best (I am guessing a pulse to 45 and then a glide down to 30 with an FAS at the top which would give us 37.5 if the deceleration was linear which in the Prius II it is not, I spend more time at the lower speeds in my glide from 40 to 30.)
Dennis
tbaleno 09-25-2006, 10:44 AM I think they are looking for a >150mpg tank. Average speed probably somewhere close to 35mpg.
Chuck 09-25-2006, 10:58 AM There is the possibility of media coverage if it looks like they go over 150mpg.
Thinking about it, that could be about ten times the FE of a reporter that might come to do a story on it.
It's probably a lot like it was this morming in Dallas - low of 55F and highs in the 80s.
NEmystic 09-25-2006, 09:22 PM A bit of fluff:
NEmystic 09-25-2006, 09:45 PM Well, it looks like I haven't really figured out how to post messages correctly on this forum yet. The previous message was a quote from Randall.
My comment would be:
Thanks Randall, for the interesting regional history! I regret not being able to see it (many times:) ) as a direct participant.
With regard to the earlier comments about the Texas / OU football rivalry, I must mention that while Austin, TX is on my list of favorite places, my (deceased) father was an OU alumnus, which would link my sentimients to the Sooners.
In response to the question about the average speed in this event; it's likely to be between 20 and 25 mph. The hypermiling techniques for the Insight in this marathon will be somewhat different from those used in last year's Prius event.
I spoke with many interesting people at the AltWheels Festival event in Boston this past weekend, including some knowledgeable engineers from Ford and Honda. As the discussions often led to the general disappointment about the obsolescence of the Honda Insight (coincidently this week), there was considerable interest in this marathon and the message it represents.
Mike Dabrowski 2000 09-26-2006, 09:23 PM Good luck guys, you have a great crew, and will probably amaze even your self.
May A warm dry wind be at your back.:woot:
MetroMPG 09-26-2006, 11:16 PM Just wanted to pop out of lurk mode to wish everyone good luck this week / weekend.
I'm currently on a 900 mile-ish sailing trip - which is possibly the only other vehicular activity I can think of that's as challenging & fun - while actually even slower - than a hypermiling marathon!
Really looking forward to reading the results when I get home.
Chuck 09-26-2006, 11:22 PM If you have not figured it out, going 2000 miles on 14 gallons means getting nearly 143mpg.
150mpg = 2100 miles
155mpg = 2170 miles
160mpg = 2240 miles

psyshack 09-27-2006, 07:43 PM Howdy all
I should be in NC Oklahoma thursday to cheer our hypermiling experts on to greatness. I will be in the Accord. I have to drop the wife off at work. Then run on up to Bartlesville. Take the Accord to the dealer to have some cosmetic stuff concerning the dash looked at. Then west on hwy 60 to the event area.
The wife in her wisdom deceided to take friday off and totaly screwed up all my plans for the four days I had planned. She wants to go to the fair friday in Tulsa. Then I hope to be back up at the event on saturday for more cheering and meets / greets.
