Mitsubishi iMiEV -- $35,000 + USD and a 16 kWh Li-Ion pack good for 80 to 100-miles AER.

Tokyo, Japan -- Mitsubishi and Peugeot announced that both companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding collaboration on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) based on the acclaimed iMiEV currently under development in Japan.

In June 2008, both companies started a feasibility study to develop, manufacture and use an electric powertrain for small urban vehicles.

The companies have now reached an understanding that allows Peugeot to partner with Mitsubishi for the development of a European BEV based on iMiEV. This BEV will be manufactured by Mitsubishi and sold under the Peugeot moniker, in parallel with Mitsubishi's own European iMiEV launch scheduled for late next year.

This new step would be mutually beneficial since the collaboration of Mitsubishi and Peugeot will ease and accelerate the introduction of their BEVs in the European market.

The two companies are now in negotiations on a cooperative agreement, targeting a product launch at the end of 2010 or beginning of 2011.

With extensive production knowledge of EVs, Peugeot is the largest global manufacturer of EVs to date, with more than 10,000 units sold. Peugeot will bring to this project its expertise in the field of powertrain electronics.

For Mitsubishi, this project is consistent with its worldwide BEV strategy. Currently involved in testing and promotional activities in Japan, New Zealand, US and across Europe, the iMiEV will be launched in Japan this summer. In parallel to the 2010 European launch of the iMiEV, Mitsubishi is considering several markets including the US for the BEV rollout.

I'm a little relieved to see the price is similar to the Volt's. If the iMiev had come in under $20k like initially rumored the Volt and even the Aptera would have little hope of success. We will have under $25k BEVs eventually though or maybe ultracap based storage "UEV".

Hi

The cost of about $35k is probably for the Japanese market where subsidies will bring down the price by $15k, so closer to $20k. AFAIR Mitsubishi goal is $20k. A previous announcement said Peugeot will take 1000 cars and rebrand them for Europe.

Anyway preorders for the MiEV to be released in June for commercial customers have reached 1500 i.e. all of the 2009- March, 2010 production run. The Japanese utilities : 300 Tokyo Electric Power Company, 150 Chubu and 150+ for smaller utilities.

Other recent news Nissan retail dealers in Kanagawa area will install chargers which will be compatible with types used by Mitsubishi and Subaru. Large dealers will get a fast recharger while smaller dealers will get a 200V connection. Charge points will be open to non Nissan customers.

Good Luck
Andrew
