Hi All:

___RHwinger came up with an absolutely wonderful idea last week that I was wondering if anyone else would be interested in?

___First, I am sure many of you remember seeing news about the following:

http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/2/Toyota_Gallons_Saved_Billboard.gif

Billboard tracks gasoline saved by Toyota hybrids: 120,000,000 + gallons

Toyota estimates that drivers of Toyota and Lexus hybrids have saved more than 120,000,000 gallons of gasoline as of February 28, 2006. An electronic billboard counter alongside the 405 Freeway in El Segundo, California updates the running total every four seconds. Toyota and Lexus hybrid drivers have also avoided emitting an estimated 900,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide and more than 3,000,000 pounds of smog-forming gases.

___Would the active membership like to see the same here? Our DBase is still evolving of course but if we had your previous car’s FE (this is all we would need), we could back calculate the gallons of gasoline saved compared to your new cars tank data at each and every tank input. You would only need to tell us in the form what your previous cars real world FE was and never ever see or touch it again. We would create a banner similar to the Toyota Billboard for the home page in which the membership as a whole could see our own real gallons saved in real time as each and every tank is input?

___There are those like myself that went from a P/U to Compact to a hybrid to a semi-lux midsize and I am not sure which car I want to show myself compared against (the Accord vs. the Insight was a dumb move on my part :() but overall, with both our improved FE hybrids and non-hybrids vs. the older vehicles and the FE we used to receive in them plus the basic and advanced techniques we have available to us absolutely makes a huge difference. With that billboard like banner, I think it would give renewed emphasis as to what we can do as a community?

___Our DBase was built off incomplete EPA data that came right from the EPA itself. When a new car is entered, it is really up to the new member to input the car’s EPA data correctly as the EPA supplies in full on their web site: Fueleconomy.gov - Find a car (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm). For the older car, we would only need what your ~ actual FE in mpg was no matter the miles or type of car and we can use each new tank entry you input to back calculate the gallons saved for the new vehicle vs. the old, add them all up for all members, use the output to place in the banner/billboard and voila!

___Please respond with your thoughts because not only was Bob’s idea extremely unique, it is a winner in so many ways it would be impossible to describe in anything less then a novel.

___You may as well tell us about ways to improve upon the DBase as well because even though tank entry is getting cleaned up, it still can be a touch confusing for the newer member in particular.

___Good Luck and thanks in advance for any and all replies.

I'm all for that great idea!
Databases are springing up here and there but this would be unique for CMPG.
Please do this if possible!

Sounds like a great idea.
Let's see how it looks.

Sounds good.
I already do this in my MS Excel log book for the Insight.

Just to make it simple, why not use the average FE value for all cars currently on the road for comparison.? I think it is 22 MPG, someone needs to confirm this. Or even use the CAFE standard for the fleet average for automakers, 24.5 I believe. Of course that number doesn't include heavy duty trucks, but we have to start somewhere.

I think it's a great idea, too. Personally, I would want to use the EPA combined average for my current. (I do this calculation in my spreadhseet, too.) Perhaps it would make sense to do it both ways? Hybrid owners get to race against their previous car, non-hybrid drivers get to use the EPA combined average? Unless we want to really encourage the driving habits thing by setting everyone up against their EPA average regardless of vehicle? To me, that would be more in line with the spirit of the site.

If we use the EPA estimates for our cars, we will be understating the fuel saved because "normal" driving will not yield the EPA numbers. Is there a database of normal drivers tanks somewhere? I would guess about 75% of EPA combined is "normal".

That sounds like a good idea.

I was generous by thinking the average driver gets 80% of the EPA....

Hi Dan:

___Your idea is an even easier setup as well. When I was speaking with Tom in Chat the other day about this, I told him the Toyota billboard used either Prius II or HSD sales and compared those EPA averages to the 21.x mpg the rest of the automobile in the US were receiving per the EPA. It would make it a lot easier as nobody would have to do anything and I wouldn’t feel so bad about making the numbers go negative ;)

___Keep the responses coming as we have some of the heavy hitters here but not nearly enough. Just to convince Tom that Bob has a great idea is all ;)

___Good Luck and thank you!

Hey, I never said it wasn't a good idea. In fact I agreed it was. I just said the original idea of having everyone enter their previous cars epa was harder than you think ;)

Anyone notice the McDonald's signs:

X Billion Served?

One McDonalds lost count and just put:

Billions and Billions Served :D

As long as the total fuel saved doesn't exceed the volume of the earth we should be OK. :D

Hi Robert:

___You will see something you came up with very soon and it looks beautiful! I wish I could give you the internal link but that will have to wait until possibly tomorrow or Wednesday before it’s up for all to see.

___As of this writing, CleanMPG members have saved over 39,593 gallons of fuel if that helps?

___Thank you Robert for the idea and Tom (Tbaleno) for making it happen! This is to cool for words! I am also too easily excitable ;)

___Good Luck

I guess I missed this thread (and others) between the server crisis and my vacation.
It's up and looks great!
