View Full Version : Think This is a Good Tire Deal

My tires are too worn to pass inspection in September, so I'm going to get a new set of Bridgestone PE92s after two years and around 40,000 miles. They offered a life-time wheel alignment, so the cost of that, the tires, and inspection is going to be $513. Sound like a good deal or not?

Almost considering getting my oil changed. This morning I changed the oil but could not replace the filter (I think King Kong was showing when the mechanic put this oil filter on :D )

I got my RE 92's from Tire Rack shipped to my door for $196 and had them installed installed them for $90 including balancing.

$513 seems like a bit much. Figure how many times you plan to get an allignment in the next 4 years and multiply by about $80.

If you think the math adds up then go for it. Personaly I think it is high though.

I'm checking out Tire Rack, and it's looking good - about $100 better for the tires....

I have bought 5 sets of tires from tirerack.com. It's hard to beat thier deals. Also just got new tires for the Prius and had them mounted at Pepboys for just $50.

Correction from previous post, the RE 92's were about $250 shipped. The Kumho's for the Prius were $196 shipped.

The last time I bought tires it was ~$550 for a set of Blizzaks, mounted on new steel wheels and shipped from tirerack. Without the wheels and without $120 worth of shipping, that price seems really steep.

I'm in the same situation. The Michelin's on the Integra are splitting, bulging from broken belts, and cracking at the tread. I don't think they've survived the last 50K miles of mostly over-inflation (too hard of a compound).

Should I keep with the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus, which is designed for LRR (at almost $100 a tire) or some reasonable alternative. LRR data is few and far-between (unfortunately), and I don't want to spend a bunch of money to hinder the FE capabilities. There's just not a lot out there for 195/60-14's (without replacing the rims, which isn't exactly economical, even over time). Thanks in advance folks...

Hi RH77:

___Unfortunately, the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus’ are about the best LRR tire made at the moment. I am speaking of decent all-season traction and LRR in one package. The Accord’s are over $125.00 a piece when I have to replace them in hopefully 40 + K miles or so? I am at 60K now … If you need the RR numbers on the MXV4 Plus’, I can get them for you as I have a pdf or a nice tabled post around here somewhere … They are about the best around other then going down to the best LRR tires made as comes on the Insight (specific RE92’s), the HCH’s SP20’s or B381’s, and of course the Proxima’s on the EV-1 (you will never find those anywhere today) which turned to high RR junk below 32 degrees F anyway.

When replacing the RE-92 tires on my Insight just under a year ago, at about 57K miles, and after checking Tire Rack and elsewhere, I found the overall price (including installation and extras such as periodic rotation) to be lowest at Costco wholesale club. IIRC, the difference was significant. (It was more than the cost of Costco membership, which could ultimately save you $ on other items.)

This was a year ago, and things may have changed since then.

Hi Brian:

___Good memory … in your case, you actually replaced them there ;)

___IIRC, Rick (Phoenix Rick) found that the OEM RE92’s were like $47.00 + tax each including mounting and balancing at Costco, right? I know the MXV4 Plus’ are expensive at Sam’s and the local tire shop but that might be a great place to look. The membership was $50.00 however at the Costco here in the Chicagoland area and that is a bit to steep for my blood given that Costco is over 45 miles away from home :( I stopped by on my way back from work one day …

Wayne - check your PMs when you get a chance, re: this thread.

Unfortunately, Costco said they don't carry Bridgestones anymore. :(

I located the LRR data here on the site, and it looks like I'll go with the MXV4+ tire, perhaps from Costco. They seem to last a long time and have an LRR that should pay for themselves in more than just cash. Thanks for the input!

yeah, but how good are the tire wranglers at somewhere like
costco? There's a lot they can screw up, that may not show
up until later.

While I did not expect 35psi in the new tires last weekend, I finally check them and all we 30psi or less! The right front one had an obvious "radial bluge" and was under 20psi! Needless to say, I started to notice a difference immediately.
