LA - Honda revealed a recently designed and interactive, driver-focused fuel economy enhancement technology called Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist™) set to debut on the all-new Honda Insight in the spring of 2009.

Eco Assist’s multiple functions

The driver-activated ECON mode optimizes control of the continuously variable transmission (CVT), engine and related powertrain components to conserve fuel. Also included is a range of driver feedback functions including one that uses speedometer background color to provide real-time guidance on environmentally responsible driving. Another includes a standard instantaneous and averaging FCD providing real time detailed data feedback while yet another an all-new economy scoring function provides further, less invasive feedback about current driving habits as well as feedback on cumulative, long-term driving style.

"Hybrid drivers enjoy trying to get the most fuel economy from their vehicles," said Dan Bonawitz, vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The visual nature of Eco Assist is intended to help drivers improve their efficient driving skills by making the hybrid experience more fun and rewarding."

Honda developed the powertrain control, driver guidance and driver feedback functions of Eco Assist to help enhance real-world fuel economy. In particular, the scoring function provides cumulative, long-term feedback through graphic 'leaves,' which grow over time as drivers learn and implement driving practices that increase fuel economy.

Activated by a green "ECON" button on the instrument panel, ECON mode optimizes control of the transmission and engine to conserve fuel. ECON mode also adjusts A/C operation, increases the potential for engaging the idle stop feature sooner and increases battery charging during regenerative braking.

The “killer app” with regards to Eco Assist’s fuel economy feedback system for the most novice of drivers uses the speedometers background color-changing appearance to indicate real-time fuel efficiency. Fuel-saving activities incorporating light and smooth acceleration and braking make the meter glow green. Somewhat less efficient driving makes the meter glow blue-green. Aggressive starts and stops that consume extra fuel make the meter glow blue. By observing the speedometer background's response to driving practices and seeking to achieve a consistently green color, drivers can receive assistance in developing driving habits that enhance fuel economy under most driving circumstances.

The scoring function provides feedback about not only current driving habits but cumulative, long-term feedback tracking as well. Located in the center of the instrument panel of the all-new Insight, the Multi-Information Display offers drivers a selection of displays, including the scoring function, in which the number of 'leaves' displayed indicates the level of environmentally responsible driving performance.

Eco Assists scoring function encourages drivers to take an interest in developing fuel efficient driving habits over the long term.

Wow, that is some slick technology! I hope that drivers of this car will have enough attention left over to watch the road! ;)

Very nice! My HCH II feels antiquated now! ;)

CVT ruined that whole game plan. NEXT!

I'd be tempted to test drive (even though I'm not in the market) just to see the dash in action.

I do have a score on my morning commute - the number of angry pickups honking at that #@$% enviro-wacko that was never in their way :eyebrow:

I'm interested to see how the machine will relate to a hypermiler. Will it actually recognize advanced techniques or mistakenly penalize actions which may not seem logical to save fuel, but will.

I don't see what's so bad about a CVT. It makes for pretty good highway mileage. I don't really care that a CVT doesn't accelerate as fast as a 5MT.

Will the Insight-2 outsell the HCH2? I don't see how that *won't* happen. It will theoretically get the same FE as the HCH2, but will have a hatchback (thus have more utilitarian function), will cost a couple thousand dollars less, is prettier, and has a radically updated set of control laws. What's not to like?

I don't see what's so bad about a CVT.It's better than a slushbox, but 5-speeds do even better. The 5-speed Insight is clearly better than the CVT Insights - same for the HCH I's.

The other good thing about 5-speeds is no fear of mechanical damage on a FAS.

If you are a programmer - it's like a 5-speed is linux...need more knowledge to avoid getting burned, but it you can - more power than Windows.

It took me two weeks to get a 5-speed, but it's 2nd nature now.

As long as it sells for under 20K it will. Now if the greedy dealers start playing games with the out the door sticker price all bets are off on sales figures.

I'm hoping oil stays under $45 a barrel and car sales are in the toilet when it hits the showroom. I'm not paying over sticker for the car period.
And since I'm paying cash for my next car I don't need to play the BS games car salesmen like to play.

My question is...what is with the Econ button? What exactly does it do that the car shouldn't already be doing? Can it be used anytime or is it within certain conditions (like the EV Glide in the HCH II, which can be done anytime, but better done when SoC is higher)?

I guess I don't understand why it's an option for the driver to use, instead of the car just being that efficient.

I'm most curious about this button. I think the new Prius is having one too?
