Looks like they are about 20 miles west of Amarillo on the downhill.

FAS heaven today!

The terrain looks like they should all just get out and push it up these hills.

(Called them hills to make them feel better.)

It's not bad until they get into NM

The only thing worse than driving OK City to Amarillo is driving OK City to Amarillo AFTER YOU'VE HIT 40 OTHER STATES. :)

Good job guys. Welcome to Texas, and enjoy the final days.

I knew I shouldn't respond before my :cup: O.K. Heaven needs to be changed to the other "H" word.

omigod, that chart looks like a bad EKG.....hope they don't need CPR when they get done!!!

What the graph does not show, is the climb is almost invisible until they enter New Mexico and leave the High Plains. As they near the Rockies, not only do they climb, but the ups and downs are frequent. If you think that graph is bad, you should see I25 from Raton into Colorado to the pass. Trust me: Raton pass takes a BIG HIT on the battery pack - Hypermiler Hell.

msirach

I'm sure they feel like it too. They drove all night and just entered New Mexico a few minutes ago.

Chuck

Raton Pass is over 7,800 feet - just 800 higher than the high point of this run, but the five miles leading up to the pass had me going from 5th down to 3rd on a constant steep climb

BTW, anyone know the historical route they are on now?

Should have mentioned that in Amarillo, TX is the headquarters of American Quarter Horse Association (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Quarter_Horse_Association) and The Big Texan Steak Ranch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Texan_Steak_Ranch) eat a 72 steak in an hour - you don't pay

I'm guessing you meant 72 oz. steak.

Just got off the phone with the team, here are my notes.

They let the aux. battery get really low on a rest stop, must have left something on. The car was acting really funky, they let the car sit for a min and then it cranked up fine and did a recal and started charging the battery normally.

The team just got to NM a bit ago, 63.0 mpg and two bars left on the gas gauge, going surely, though it’s a two lane road (one in each direction) and they're not trying to hold anyone up. This will be the closest they've come to not getting 800 miles on a tank.

Headwind all night, its 65 degrees already.
Stopping as planned for the night.

Tomorrow is final day of the trek.

Wayne talked w/ Honda guy in Detroit last night.

Justin going to Milwaukie and Wayne driving the car back.

Wayne scheduled to go to Insight II launch Dec 8th, info still under NDA.

WOW that's a lot of climbing. Ain't no easy way to get 6000 feet higher than where you woke up in the morning. Hope it doesn't hit the average too hard. Of course they're ending back at <1000 feet (right?) so there's opportunity to make a lot of it up.

I'm sure the extra climbing along the way (and the 200 mile detour) wouldn't be worth it or I'd suggest ending in Death Valley, which isn't too far from the scheduled end point. Nothing like ending up a FE run at minus 200 feet elevation.

BMM, please add today to the 'overall'.
They're 100 miles outside Amarillo per the latest update. I'd think they could get quite a bit further if they want to push a little.

Chuck

Bet Wayne is wanting to take on that 72oz steak

What if they get to level ground in the near future, couldn't they just drive around in endless circles getting ultra high mpg averages which would negate some of these tougher hill climbs giving them a reasonably higher mpg total? I thought of this a few days ago but was distracted by leftovers. - Dale

Maybe pushing in circles would be better....:D

Sort of unstated in the plan was to cover the 48 states with not only the highest mpg, but the lowest fuel consumed.

As for driving in circles... Insight Marathon (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2783), which also included Wayne and Justin as drivers.

We just filled up at *gasp* the same Shell that the Taylor's filled up at. The attendant first asked me, "Are you one of those Australians?".

My answer: Yep - and on the Highway to Hell (or US 491 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_666#U.S._Route_666) - yes - they will cross it) :p

Team @ 16:36 eastern "We're at the first peak of the climb now. 20 plus mile per hour headwind. 47.8 mpg since the stop in Santa rosa. Force charging like crazy."

msirach

The crew is having a grueling day today to say the least. 20 mph head wind and they were at the peak of the first climb. Force charging like crazy and at 47.8 mpg since the last fill up. I'm sure the frustration is high but having a visual of the climb they are in, I can see that that number is still very good. They have time to pull the tank to a much higher mark. That's a condition of real world driving conditions though.

Message from Wayne:

They filled in Santa Rosa, NM, The tank numbers are:
801 miles
12.341 Gallons
64.91 MPG

Also, Wayne said that after the long drop into Albuquerque, they are now at about 65 MPG for the new tank.

Climbing 6000 feet, 20mph headwinds, three passengers and luggage, and 65mpg on the tank (which started in an ice storm, if I recall). That "worst possible" scenario still resulted in a tank average that's 10% better than the previous world record. Very impressive.

Man, I gotta get one of them to give me a day or two of "how to REALLY drive" lessons. This time of year, I'm trying to stay over 50 MPG and I sure don't have to climb over 2 7000+ foot passes! For the next 3 months, I'll be happy if I can keep every tank over 45 MPG. Last year wasn't bad, only 2 tanks under 45 MPG but it was a relatively mild winter.

Just got off the phone w/ the team. They had just got into the hotel room when I called. Zen like timing :D

Wayne65.2 MPG for the climb from 4k to 5'5, Jennie 5'5k to 7k, down to 6k 52.5 mpg

Tank at 65, hoping for 70 tomorrow.

Wayne and company could make a nice living just giving lessons. Any time you would like to get to slightly warmer area you will be welcome.
