View Full Version : Week of December 1st -- December 7th (Nat Avg $1.82)
Right Lane Cruiser 12-01-2008, 06:25 AM Another Monday!
Cold as usual...
18F (8F windchill), 8mph cross/tailwind from the NNW, overcast with icy roads:
89.5mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 93.3mpg over 497.9mi with 19 of 20 bars showing on the fuel gauge.
Chuck 12-01-2008, 06:32 AM 91.1mpg at 40F
PaleMelanesian 12-01-2008, 08:12 AM 59.8 mpg at 39F this morning.
I voted 7+ on the poll. 157 degrees water temp when I parked at work, after 10 miles.
lamebums 12-01-2008, 11:11 AM 58.2 this morning. 30 degrees, snow, wind out of the south at 20 MPH.
JusBringIt 12-01-2008, 11:59 AM Wow, have you checked your coolant level andrew? well then again, I doubt your car is on for any more than 33% of your commute which would probably cause an inflation in your warm-up time. But still you must live on a hill though lol.
I voted 3 miles with no shut-off, I'm not using the sg right now so no instant #'s. :)
SlowHands 12-01-2008, 12:08 PM Blech - drove my daughter and a fellow classmate to Decatur last night... through wind and snow and mush. Pretty strong winds, most of the time right in the blocked grill. A dismal 28.8 on the way down, and a REALLY dismal 24.9 on the way back  This was with DWL aiming for avg 53-57 mph, with low point of 45 on uphills. I feel dirty:o
This morning was no picnic either... only 23.5 on the way to work. Argh. This short commute gives almost no opportunity for technique and warm up.
PaleMelanesian 12-01-2008, 12:18 PM At least you had another passenger on board. PMPG was pretty good, then.
lnmcmahan 12-01-2008, 01:33 PM Hoo boy! What do you mean by "normal operating temperature"? I was going to vote somewhere between 10 and 20, but when I didn't see the option, I started to wonder what you meant. Here are some numbers:
134F, 4 miles - Finally, I can FAS with the key without leaving it off for 1 full sec!
160F, 7 miles - Car starts to show decent mileage and good power on pulses.
180F, 12 miles - This is where the car would run if I didn't have a grill block.
195F, 18 miles - This is where I start to get close to optimal results.
205F, 20 miles - This is the sweet spot of FE for me.
Now I would call 195F normal, but I think Honda would call 180F normal, or even, God forbid, 160F. IMHO, all you choices are way short of what *I* would consider normal! :)

See my post. I included detailed number. This is not just a single run, but goes on consistently, even in warm weather. I'm with Andrew!
Larry
lamebums 12-01-2008, 01:48 PM I was only up to 112 degrees when I got on the highway (2 miles). Fas downhill brought it to 102 (2 miles). Then climbed a 2 mile hill of 5% grade. Got to like 170, then Fas'd again. I don't know if it did reach full operating temperature (190+). I'll have to check. But it's at least six miles before I get up there.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-01-2008, 02:19 PM Interesting numbers. I looked up the temperature stats on my Insight and fortunately Randall (HighWater) had them. The thermostat is completely open at 180F and the radiator fan comes on at 205F. With a full block I was regularly in the 204F range, so I pulled out a block element and now it tops out at 197F. I haven't seen any hit on mileage and I don't hear the fan anymore. ;)
I cheat with a block heater.
36ish on the way in to work. I forgot the exact number. Its still reading very low.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-01-2008, 03:56 PM Another challenging drive home...
25F (15F windchill), 9mph cross/headwind from the WNW, sunny:
94.4mpg for 22.8mi (Work to home)
This brings the tank to 93.4mpg over 519.7mi with 18 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 91.8mpg over 45.5mi
Tomorrow I'm taking the car in to put on the new tires I got for my birthday. :)
Kacey Green 12-01-2008, 09:08 PM Horrible day, couldn't roll out the the lot on my way to lunch, the wind pinned me into the parking spot until I fired up the engine and put'er in reverse. Did air the tires up to just under what the team is running on the 48 state run.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-02-2008, 06:17 AM I think I found that wind you were talking about, Kacey. :(
Cold temps + recal + strong headwind = not good. :p
19F (6F windchill), 13mph headwind from the S, overcast:
78.9mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 92.7mpg over 542.4mi with 17 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Blech. :(
JusBringIt 12-02-2008, 06:36 AM it's funny how no two people have voted on the same thing....yet lol.
PaleMelanesian 12-02-2008, 07:59 AM 52.1 mpg - 12 mph headwind going home, stop for some meds, traffic...
60.0 mpg this morning, 34F with frost, but I had the car covered. :D That's my coldest 60 mpg segment yet.
Chuck 12-02-2008, 08:05 AM I left my car outside in freezing weather. :o
90.0mpg at 35F
Damionk 12-02-2008, 08:10 AM I just voted on this poll and I found the results thus far interesting....
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/500/medium/CMPG_poll.jpg
Sorry if it's kind of small...I did some editing to make it fit better.
PaleMelanesian 12-02-2008, 08:41 AM Delta - 90 mpg? Great work.
My car lives outside, too. This helps:
http://legacy-motors.net/images/car_cover1.jpg
Kacey Green 12-02-2008, 09:26 AM I can't cover my car, because it is an advertisement :(, although if I get the same design on the cover, that may work. :D
diamondlarry 12-02-2008, 06:05 PM I forgot to post yesterday. Wasn't anything out of the ordinary though. Today I had the temp going to work and coming home: 28F. Winds this morning were light but had increased to 10-15mph from the SW.
1. 72.4-11.0(home to work)
2. 64.3-11.0(work to home)
Average for today was 68.1.
My boss has been letting me plug in at work.:) Yesterday though, when I left for home, the coolant temp was the same as the outside temp. Today when I plugged in, I noticed that the GFCI was tripped so I reset it and plugged in my cord. The GFCI tripped immediately before I ever got the EBH plugged in. Luckily I had a spare extension cord with me like a good Hypermiler should.:D
Right Lane Cruiser 12-02-2008, 07:58 PM Well, I had a good trip home to make up for the poor one to work, but getting the new tires on pulled it down a bit. The shop is very close to my house (1.6mi RT) and though I got there at better than 91mpg, he idled it and of course the new tires were set at 30psi. That cost me 2.8mpg on the day total!!
Oh well. At least I don't need to worry about no tread left. ;)
38F (33F windchill), 7mph tailwind from the SSW, sunny:
111.3mpg for 21.9mi (Work to home)
47.7mpg for 1.6mi (Home to mechanic and back )
The tank is down to 93.1mpg over 566.0mi with 16 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 89.3mpg over 46.3mi :p
psyshack 12-02-2008, 08:33 PM 37.9 mpg for today.
Poll is bad. My cars take 12 to 15 miles to get the oil up to what i would call running temps in fall/winter. 3 to 5 miles in spring/summer. Water temp is misleading IMHO.
Chuck 12-02-2008, 08:38 PM 37.9 mpg for today.
Poll is bad. My cars take 12 to 15 miles to get the oil up to what i would call running temps in fall/winter. 3 to 5 miles in spring/summer. Water temp is misleading IMHO.I'll do another one in the future
lamebums 12-03-2008, 03:35 AM I tested it out: if I consider 190 degrees the operating temperature, I never reach it in the morning. (I got to 183.) I'll get there in the afternoon because of a slightly longer drive (different route to avoid a crappily placed ramp).
Right Lane Cruiser 12-03-2008, 06:25 AM Well, gee. That was fun. :(
I had a strong quartering tailwind that because of the turns in the road tended to impede me more than help. Coupled with snow, ice, and water on the roads this trip is pretty dismal. I can't tell what effect (if any) the new tires are having because of the other variables. :p
20F (6F windchill), 18mph wind from the NW, overcast:
80.6mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work :ccry:)
The tank is down to 92.6mpg over588.4mi with 16 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
That wind is going to really hurt on the way home.
PaleMelanesian 12-03-2008, 08:22 AM Sean, what tires did you get?
61.1 home last night
It warmed up overnight. It was warmer this morning than when I went to bed.
72.5 mpg, 58 degrees and a headwind. Without that wind... ;)
Chuck 12-03-2008, 08:30 AM 60F but lots of wind this morning: 86.4mpg
Right Lane Cruiser 12-03-2008, 08:49 AM Hi, Andrew -- I got the OEM tire... Bridgestone Potenza RE-92 165/65SR-14
The tread is WAY taller on the new tires!
The ride quieter but I know there is a new tire hit on FE with this sensitive little car. I just can't assess it properly with the current conditions.
diamondlarry 12-03-2008, 04:40 PM Not too bad today considering the weather. I had just over 30F this morning with winds from the SW@ 5-10mph. This afternoon I had 37F and the wind was still from the SW but had gone up to 10-15mph. Traffic was also quite generous/kind.
1. 69.4-11.0(home to work)
2. 70.2-11.0(work to home)
Average for today was 69.8.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-03-2008, 04:40 PM I felt like I was towing a semi all the way home. :(
I hate wind!!!
22F (10F windchill), 12mph headwind from the NW with gusts up to 21mph, sunny:
79.9mpg for 22.6mi (Work to home)
This brings the tank down to 92.0mpg over 611.1mi with 15 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
The day total is currently at 80.1mpg over 45.1mi... we'll see how it looks after Choir practice tonight.
psyshack 12-03-2008, 06:37 PM 38.1 mpg today.
Aether glider 12-03-2008, 08:51 PM pulled a 63.5 mpg today. winter sucks.
PaleMelanesian 12-03-2008, 09:13 PM Psy, we've missed you. Glad to see you here again.
64.8 mpg coming home. 670 miles on the tank and nearing empty, but no warning light yet.
psyshack 12-03-2008, 09:36 PM Psy, we've missed you. Glad to see you here again.
64.8 mpg coming home. 670 miles on the tank and nearing empty, but no warning light yet.
Thank You!
I don't think I will be laying any big numbers down. Well hold on for a sec there. Lets see here. 30 mpg hwy by the 08 epa numbers for my little funster gas pig, and Im at 38 mpg with no mods except max side wall tire psi ain't to bad for a sport hypermiler,,, now is it. :)
I haven't been gone. Just busy my friend. Yeah know that real life crap. And rest assured, even though I have no tank logs anymore. I never dip below epa coMbined. And if Im awake epa hwy is a shoe in when it comes to city driving. :D
Right Lane Cruiser 12-03-2008, 10:08 PM I'll second that sentiment, Andrew! Good to see you posting numbers again, Jeff!
Aether, you said it. :ccry:
13F (5F windchill), 5mph wind from the W, overcast:
81.0mpg for 17.1mi (Home to Church, tailwind)
80.8mpg for 17.0mi (Church to home, headwind)
The tank is down another chunk to 91.4mpg over 645.2mi with 14 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 80.6mpg over 79.2mi
Dude, I can't tell you how frustrating it is to not even get close to 90mpg now. :(
Chuck 12-04-2008, 06:34 AM 85.5mpg at 32F this morning.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-04-2008, 06:44 AM Man, this cold stuff STINKS. :p
16F (5F windchill), 8mph crosswind from the WNW, overcast with salt/ice/water roads:
76.1mpg for 22.5mi (Home to work)
The tank is now down to 90.8mpg over 667.7mi with 14 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Blech.
JusBringIt 12-04-2008, 07:11 AM Oh man Sean that's a delta of 33% from where you were in the summer !
PaleMelanesian 12-04-2008, 08:30 AM 60.0 mpg this morning at 38 degrees.
Tank is 62.7 and 679 miles. Will be filling up soon.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-04-2008, 08:36 AM Oh man Sean that's a delta of 33% from where you were in the summer !
Yes, the Insight is much more sensitive to weather changes than the Elantra... but it can still whoop it in terms of fuel consumed in the dead of winter. Last winter I only had one commute hit below the combined EPA for the car (missed it by 0.7mpg) and that was the day we had -14F actual temps out.
It hurts to see numbers this low but it is still way the heck better than everything else on the roads at these temps. (Excluding loaded down people movers and bicycles ;))
Nice work, Andrew!!
Wish I had your temps to work with...
Chuck 12-04-2008, 09:06 AM Man, this cold stuff STINKS. :p
16F (5F windchill), 8mph crosswind from the WNW, overcast with salt/ice/water roads:
76.1mpg for 22.5mi (Home to work)The tank is now down to 90.8mpg over 667.7mi with 14 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Blech.
Look like a case of Old Man Winter giving you a hard time. :(
When it's 85F in the morning, I might do 105mpg.
32F this morning with nice roads, I might have done 88mpg (but it was 85.5)
From visiting last Dec, I'm guessing the air temp on Scangage was only 35F and would not be suprized if the coolant temp did not break 170F.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-04-2008, 09:23 AM Yup. At least my grill block is helping. Coolant temps get up to 198F or so (I keep it in check with the heater), and the air intake got up to mid 50's.
I still can't tell how much of a FE hit these new tires are just because the conditions have been worse than before I swapped them out. The car won't roll out of the garage on its own anymore, though. Not a good sign. <sigh>
Chuck 12-04-2008, 09:27 AM I've had a block heater for six weeks, but it's anything but straight forward....won't do in unless I have no doubts on how to install.
JusBringIt 12-04-2008, 10:52 AM hey chuck, let me know if you need my address, we can split shipping...or you can just drive it over and I'll cover your gas :p.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-04-2008, 04:49 PM Another poor driving day completed. :p Nothing like cold, hills, the wind in your face, and lots of tailgaters.
14F (-1F windchill), 15mph cross/headwind from the W, sunny:
76.3mpg for 22.7mi (Work to home)
The tank is down to 90.2mpg over 690.5mi with 13 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 76.3mpg over 45.3mi
diamondlarry 12-04-2008, 04:54 PM I tried for a 70mpg day but fell a tad short.:( I'm with Sean, this is VERY frustrating seeing the FCD in the 60's instead of 80's and 90's.
I started out with 24F this morning and the trip home was only up to 25F. Winds this morning were 5-10 from the W and were 10+mph from the W this afternoon.
1. 71.2-11.0(home to work)
2. 67.1-11.0(work to home)
Average for today was 69.1.
Kacey Green 12-04-2008, 10:03 PM Tank still at 58.7, 52 or so this morning, 66 or 68 on the lunch run.
61 on the way home.
Temp this morning was 32F, the temp at lunch was ~60 and felt like it. The temp on the way home was 55 but felt like 45-50.
All bars still showing on the fuel meter.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-05-2008, 06:34 AM Another chilled morning with headwind... :p
11F (-2F windchill), 9mph headwind from the SW, overcast:
74.7mpg for 22.5mi (Home to work)
The tank is now down to a miserable 89.6mpg over 713.0mi with 12 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Looks like I may have a tailwind this afternoon so I'll try to pull it up...
psyshack 12-05-2008, 06:37 AM Yesterday was a bust. 24f for the drive in with a headwind. Then a 80 mile round trip run for work. Then home with no tail wind. For 160+ miles driven for the day. Tank dropped to 36 mpg.
See what today bring with a fill up and hand calc's this evening.
PaleMelanesian 12-05-2008, 08:08 AM 56.7 home last night - 45F and headwind
57.1 this morning - 35F and minor tailwind
Tank is down to 62.5 mpg, but I broke 700 miles again! :D Still no low fuel light, which makes this my longest tank yet, thanks to a huge fillup last time.
lamebums 12-05-2008, 11:41 AM 55.7 this morning. Clear, but 20 degrees. And hit *every* red light.
Kacey Green 12-05-2008, 10:00 PM tank down to 58.5, 60 on the way home, lunch run was horrible, got caught by every red light, two school zones and a crossing guard playing traffic cop (nobody was crossing and all he was doing was backing up traffic (behind a fully functioning light arrgh, [ he was setup about 800 yards behind the light on the main road 4 lanes plus a turning lane])
The cold commute uphill this morning didn't go so well either, barely eeked out 55, and the lunch trip was too.
The route home was my usual rather than the alt I'd taken the yesterday and the day before the day before yesterday.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-05-2008, 10:18 PM I know what you mean, Kacey. We've got just over an inch of snow on the ground now so it is only going to get worse. This is the stuff I was dealing with in January last year so it is early this year...
This is now officially lowering my lifetime average. :ccry:
22F (9F windchill), 15mph tailwind from the SSE, overcast:
82.9mpg for 22.1mi (Work to home)
The tank is down another notch to 89.4mpg over 735.1mi with 12 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 78.4mpg for 44.6mi
diamondlarry 12-05-2008, 10:41 PM This is now officially lowering my lifetime average. :ccry:
I definitely hear that. I cringe every time I get behind the wheel lately because it almost certainly means my lifetime average is going to go down.:(:ccry:
The temperature never topped 20F for the whole day. It was 14F this morning and it was only 18F this afternoon with wind chills ~0F thanks to winds from the SW@ 10-15mph with gusts to ~25mph.
1. 67.2-11.0(home to work)
2. 57.2-11.0(work to home)
3. 72.2-9.1(home to Meijer)
4. 56.1-12.2(Meijer to my mom's)
5. 76.9-5.1(mom's to home)
Average for today was 63.2.:(
I noticed something interesting during segment 4 tonight. I was totally throwing the book at it(P&G from 30-20mph) and, at ~the half way point, I was struggling with staying at 50mpg with the occasional dip into the high 40's. I then switched to 37-40 down to ~25mph and the mpg started climbing. At one point I was just shy of 60mpg. It sounds like further testing is in order.
psyshack 12-05-2008, 10:42 PM 38.18 for the hand calc's today.
diamondlarry 12-06-2008, 09:44 AM I can tell already that today is going to stink.:( I took my wife and daughter to Fitness USA and I only averaged mid 60's for the entire trip. I still have to go back and get them. Then later, I have to take my daughter to Nappanee, IN(13 miles each way) to help serve meals then go back and pick her up ~4 hours later. I also may have to make a run later to get my wife's car a drink and a new battery. At least that run will be on her car.:p
lamebums 12-06-2008, 02:43 PM There's an inch of snow on the ground and if I'm going anywhere I'm taking the Buick. No point in getting a <40 segment on a tank that's already having a bad enough time.
Kacey Green 12-06-2008, 08:10 PM I got less than 55 on my morning commute and the test drive I took in my car ( I drove the customer rode)
He got 49 MPG with cruise uphill at 70mph
The trip home was 60.0 MPG bring the tank back up to 57.8 :(
PaleMelanesian 12-06-2008, 09:11 PM I LOVE NON-ETHANOL GAS! I found the ONE station in town without E10. :D The Scangauge was pessimistic about my tank - 62 mpg.
721 miles (nearly record, but I got anxious), 11.111 gallons (:p)
64.89 mpg! :D
Right Lane Cruiser 12-06-2008, 11:50 PM Nice work, Andrew!!
I'm still driving the Insight through the snow here, Auston. No point in using more gas than I have to. ;)
diamondlarry 12-07-2008, 06:02 AM I'm still driving the Insight through the snow here, Auston. No point in using more gas than I have to.;)
Yeah, I took that approach too last night.:( I had to go ~13 miles each way last night through moderate snow with 15-20 mph winds and, let's just say that if the mpg numbers were music, I would have been listening to a lot of early Elvis Presley.;):ccry:
Right Lane Cruiser 12-07-2008, 02:48 PM Well, the numbers stink but they are much better than I could have done in the Elantra.
The roads weren't plowed and I had a bit of wind. Winds are much worse at lower speeds when the air is really dense... :p
9F (-4F windchill), 9mph headwind from the SE, snowing:
63.2mpg for 17.2mi (Home to Church)
11F (-3F windchill), 10mph crosswind from the ESE, snowing:
71.9mpg for 16.9mi (Church to home)
The tank is down massively to 88.1mpg over 769.3mi with 10 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 67.2mpg over 34.2mi
Kacey Green 12-07-2008, 03:07 PM Here in Columbia, we got a bit of a break from winter and are currently enjoying a bit of Fall temps, with some massive feeling winds.
Despite the winds I went to get my Sunday bagel and @51 degrees got over 63mpg on the way in, and on my way home 64.0 Car was only at 188F when I parked but the tank is back up to 58.3 :) I wonder what I could have pushed to if the masses hadn't packed all three lanes in each direction forcing me to a max speed of 70 and a low speed of 42. (Not counting hitting several red lights on the way back.) I'm just greatful the Gloves I use for DWG were able to stay in the passenger seat.
OT: the lady at the bagel shop asked if I wanted the military discount. Some of you have met me, what could she have been picking up on (other than the 24h watch [I don't think she could have seen that])
lamebums 12-07-2008, 03:43 PM Threw the entire book at it last night, got 53.6 going to White Castle.
Then 41.2 over 17.1 miles while doing doughnuts
Then 56.x going back home.
