A challenge born from another pair of drivers condemnation. (cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=165321)

The 2009 HCH-II -- 2-weeks, 3 members, 300 pounds of gear on a 7,500 + mile, around the country attempt at a US FE world record in one very fuel efficient hybrid automobile :)

Motivation

Think back to the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. In particular, two-days that mesmerized and stoked the competitive fires of the US Swim team like nothing else.

French swimmer Alain Bernard said his French swim team was going to “smash” the US in the 4x100 relay. On paper, experts declared the French swim team victors before they even entered the pool. What the experts did not count on was Jason Lezak, captain of the United States relay team, to fight back.
Alain’s “boast” did not just motivate but brought the world what can be one argued as one of the single greatest moments in Olympic history, Lezak’s final 50M swim leg.

Reliving the moment

As the rest of the world watched, Lezak pushed off the wall over the last 50M almost half a body length behind Bernard, the fastest 100M freestyle swimmer in the world. With 35 M left to go, Lezak began what can only be described as a herculean effort to pull within a forearm’s length of Bernard. At 10 M out, Lezak was almost shoulder to shoulder with the seemingly insurmountable Frenchman. At the wall, it was finger vs. finger. For what seemed like minutes, the world fell silent as the electronic scoring was finally displayed. The underdog US team beat the French by just eight-hundreds.

Sept. 3, 2008

An Australian husband and wife team were preparing to launch on a VW TDI/Shell/Navman sponsored 48-Contiguous US State Fuel Economy World record. At the pre-launch press conference, they made mention of something that has been hanging in the back of our own motivational lockers for the last 2 months.

Couple goes after lowest fuel consumption around the US. (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15572)

During the VW TDI press conference (http://easylink.playstream.com/netcaster/vw/vw.wvx) at the 24:45 minute mark, the following was spoken…
Q: There is a concept known as Hypermiling. Can you explain that or are you going to use that?

John Taylor: No. We were asked this question in Australia last week. Our understanding of Hypermiling is where you sit 4” behind a truck and you suck on the back of the truck and the truck can be doing 90 mph and you do not use any gas. Dangerous illegal. We are not going to do anything that is illegal or dangerous. The most important factor for us on this trip is not only our own safety but the safety of every other driver on the road.
A plan was born

With CleanMPG members in Los Angeles covering the LA Autoshow plus a quick Honda Motorcycle review, why not attempt to break the recently achieved, 48-Contiguous State World Record of 58.82 mpgUS on the same trip? A few calls to Honda, ScanGauge and members, it is a go!

November is not an ideal of time of the year for driving a fuel efficient hybrid with 3 individuals and their gear for a world record but this is our challenge. Success or failure really depends on the weather conditions on route although I will have some highly talented drivers taking turns behind the HCH-II’s windscreen.

Justin’s real claim to fame came about as one of the drivers at the Insight Marathon Attempt (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2783) and the World Fuel Economy Championships (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12620) this past summer :)

And probably the most fortunate and grateful, myself.

Updates from the LA Auto Show, from the bike review and the 48-Contiguous State Attempt will follow periodically.

This should be interesting. Wishing I could have done it though class made it an impossibility.

Who wants to try and do 2500 miles in an Insight next summer. :D

Do you guys really want to take I-44 from Springfield, MO to Tulsa? There are rural highways (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=AR-77%2FUS-61&daddr=Elm+St%2FUS-51%2FUS-62+to:US-60+to:Historic+Route+66%2FOK-69%2FUS-60+to:36.580247,-95.350342+to:I-44+W&hl=en&geocode=%3BFQ6uMgIdksax-g%3BFbRDMwIdHPtm-g%3BFTYbLwIderJW-g%3B%3BFRANJwIdGrxI-g&mra=dpe&mrcr=1&mrsp=4&sz=8&via=2,3,4&sll=36.266421,-94.691162&sspn=2.320723,4.943848&ie=UTF8&z=8) that would be a lot more conducive to hypermiling and adds only about 16 miles...but quite a bit more time I admit.

Not to sound like a troll, and truly with all due respect because I firmly believe that Wayne has done some astounding and great work for conservation, but with the comment so blatently added to attempt to dispell the belief that hypermiling and illegal driving acts are synonymous, where is the mention that this event will in fact NOT involve dangerous and illegal driving practices? I saw no mention of this. Can we get the drivers to sign an oath that they will obey all traffic laws?

Go for it!

When you smash the record you can send the Aussie a dictionary with a true definition of hypermiling LoL

Just kidding, it's all good, any member of cleanmpg can tell you hypermilers do not draft trucks, idiots do!

...any member of cleanmpg can tell you hypermilers do not draft trucks, idiots do!

Last weekend, on I-80 from NEPA to LI, the big rigs were passing me like I was standing still. The radio, as usual, was preaching doom&gloom for the inbound GWB ("Over an hooouur on the 95 express and not much better on the local and the other approaches"), so I decided to wait out the delay the way I usually do. I took a nice easy 45-50mph drive (PSL is 55-65 along the way). As one 18 wheeler blew past me one lane over at a bit over 70mph (20mph more than me), I felt the air current pull the car ahead. It was heading slightly downhill, just enough to keep my speed constant during DFCO coasting, and I saw the speedometer bump 1mph higher as the truck passed by.

It's called Traffic Side Draft - It has the "d" word in there, but has nothing to do with tailgating and is not the least bit dangerous or illegal. And it works wonderfully. Just as November's dead leaves get pulled off the road surface and fly along behind a car driving down the street, the speeding vehicles in the next lane increase your fuel economy by creating the air currents that lower your car's "air speed". So as we wish Wayne and crew well, we will pray for "light but fast moving" traffic so they can enjoy a strong side draft.

Ok thanks for clearing that up, I need to reword that statement:

Any member of cleanmpg can tell you hypermilers do not tailgate trucks, idiots do! But they don't mind a little traffic side draft here and there....

Maybe he can send me a dictionary with definitions of hypermiling also.

Wayne and Justin just left Harrisburg, IL. They drove down and applied the front window graphic at "Girls in the Garage" in Carrier Mills. Dropped off a couple of Scangauges at my house and headed to Cairo, IL. (via McDonalds of course)

Wayne and Justin just left ... headed to Cairo, IL. (via McDonalds of course)

So this is the real reason Wayne changed the first two days of the 48-state route, avoiding my childhood home in Idaho. It wasn't the mountains and winter weather risk. It was the lack of McDonald's restaurants, only 2 on his original 420 mile route through Idaho (Weiser and Lewiston).

I just had a call from Wayne and Justin. It has been quite the morning for them. They stopped at a truck stop for the night in Van Buren, MO and this morning a semi ran over the driver's front corner of the car!!

Justin borrowed a breaker bar from one of the truckers and managed to bend the fender away from the tire so that it can be driven but the driver's door doesn't work very well anymore and of course the aerodynamics are completely shot at this point. They are going to try to send me a snapshot of the damage -- I'll post it here if they succeed.

Meanwhile, Wayne is getting on the phone with his contacts at Honda to find out what they want to do about the damaged car -- he wants to get it swapped out as quickly as possible so he can get back on track.

I don't think they did, Tim. :(

Wayne just gave me another call. Honda Detroit has already committed the other car originally intended to go on this trip (when the plan was for 2 vehicles to drive the route) so that one won't be available for them. They are heading off to LA and Honda is trying to line up a body shop to repair the car while they are at the Auto Show.

Hopefully the car can be fixed up for them! Justin is driving right now and though they are traveling at higher speeds than they will be for the actual attempt the car is only returning 50mpg and seems to be pulling to one side. :(

Maybe it would be better to use a Ford Escape Hybrid.
Then when you wanted to pull over and rest, you could turn on the 4WD
and head off-road, into the trees and boulders about 30 yards. Or maybe 50 to be safe.

My Step-Dad drove trucks for about 50 years and was never involved in an accident.
Most truck drivers of that by-gone era were pretty safety conscious.
That was before the age of continuous 24/7 cell chatting and texting-while-driving.

Tears came to my eyes when I saw that beautiful Honda mangled by some dimwit..

I just talked to my son, Wayne, on the cell phone. He said the accident was not a hit and run, that the driver of the truck did stop. None of them were hurt, but plenty shook up. What an awakening, like having a car accident while in bed. Police took a report and all went according to the way it was supposed to in an accident situation. He also said there was definite damage to the front end alignment that was affecting the drive. Honda first told them to continue to California where they would repair the car, but after seeing the pictures of the damage and the discussions about the alignment, they decided to give him a new car to start the journey. It would be pretty nutsw to try for a world record in the damaged car. The new replacement car was delivered immediately to Wayne's driveway in Illinois and is awaiting his return for pick-up. Wayne said that when Honda wants something done, it gets done -- NOW! They have about six hours to go before getting back -- will transfer their gear -- and start out again about 4:30 a.m. tomorrow.

I know exactly how he felt. It happened to me when I was about sixteen, a few years back. I can still remember the shock vividly. I was asleep in the back seat of a car when the driver fell asleep at the wheel and rolled it over a couple times in a ditch. There were four of us in the car, but we all only had cuts and bruises. I think it was because we were all asleep, even the driver, when the car flipped. All were asleep and relaxed so we didn't get hurt badly. Back in the fifties when cars were built like tanks without all the new safety features, and we all came out OK. The car was totalled though because of the crushing from the flips. Not going to do that again! I'm sure Wayne and buddies will be very selective as to where they'll park for the night next time.

....

I have an idea of what happened as three years ago I parked on US 287 near Wichta Falls, TX - where a train track runs feet from the highway....to nap and have a locomotive pass four feet from you is about how Wayne and Justin felt.

Just FYI you never want to hang out that close to the tracks when a train might be passing by. Trains frequently drag along bits of metal and other debris without the operator knowing it--pay attention to the RR right-of-way and you will often see shredded brush:eek:.

I'd like to give a big thank you to some of my friends I know from showing dogs who will be putting us up for the night. Jeanette Faure (NY) and Molly McNally (TN) are providing shelter for us as we trek across the country. Molly didn't have enough room for all of us, so she is sponsoring a hotel room for us. A big thanks to both of them and the many others who offered to open their homes to the team.

....Just got a call from Wayne. I guess I'll be changing the motor oil for him the day he arrives here to stay at my place (I just live 30 minutes from the start of the record run). Hopefully the engine will be a little broken in by then.......lets see, it should have around 3600 miles on the odometer at that point? Anyway, we'll change the oil and wash the car so it looks brand new again. I wonder if he is/was able to transfer the graphics to this new Civic?

The door graphics had not been applied yet. He (Good decision) decided to wait for warmer temps when he got to LA. I ordered a new window graphic for him this morning and will ship it to Rani's tomorrow. He arrived home around 7pm. He and Justin were going to prep the new car and get ready for an early departure.

Sorry to hear about the car. Glad Honda found a replacement. Too bad they had to back track.

I'll try to keep an eye on the progress but I have been swamped at work lately. I had 92 hours last week.

Just got a final call from Wayne . They just finished up the route for the day at Needles, CA. They started in Gallup, NM this morning. Temps ranged today from 21° this morning to a high of 66°. Had some major climbs today but ended up with a very respectable 72.5 mpg for 523 miles.

Wayne and Justin got to my place around 1am last night. He's going to pick up his bike from Honda today.

We'll see if the new graphic gets here so we can put that on the car too.

Just about 2 hours ago we finished applying the graphics to both doors of the HCH. So far, the graphics for the window have not arrived in LA yet. The door graphics look spectacular and pictures will be posted soon. Right now, I'm sitting in an LA library to use their WiFi while Wayne is out on the Honda Motorcycle driving it through its paces for the review. Hopefully I'll have internet access later tonight so I can post those pictures.

Hi Justin,
I talked with Rani this afternoon. I sent her the tracking info for the window graphics yesterday. I mailed them ExpressMail and it is guaranteed by tomorrow.
