2008 Ford Fiesta ECOnetic -- 63 mpgUS combined on the European NEDC.
More details about Ford of Europe’s most frugal B-Class sized compact.
A Prius with its advanced HSD not only achieves greater than 50% better fuel economy over a somewhat similarly equipped Corolla but at the same time includes increased interior and exterior space and size, utility and a number of additional amenities including the hybrid drivetrain for its premium.
What does the European Ford Fiesta “ECOnetic” offer over and above a similarly equipped Fiesta in terms of its size, amenities, price, performance and Fuel Economy? Let’s find out.
Fiesta Style + vs. Fiesta ECOnetic
Unlike most American Ford offerings, the Europeans usually have a much larger selection of models, engines and trim levels for a given make than we do. In the case of the just released Fiesta, the same applies.
Fiesta models include both a 3 and a 5-door along with various trims including what Ford calls the Studio (the bare bones base model), Style, Style +, ECOnetic, Zetec, Zetec S and the top of the line, Titanium. Fortunately, all the available trims of the 3 and the 5-door hatch’s include the same interior passenger and cargo carrying capacity so there is no analysis needed to differentiate interior/exterior size between any two trim levels.
Engine choices however include a whole host of displacements, fuel choices, transmissions and varying levels of performance.

Amenities
To keep our comparison simple, the Style + most closely resembles the ECOnetic given similar standard equipment on each.
The Style + includes 15” tires on steel wheels, a heated front windshield and manual A/C.
The ECOnetic includes 14” low RRc Michelin tires on steel wheels, low-viscosity transmission fluid, a taller final drive ratio, lower ride height w/ Sports Tuned suspension and a gear-change indicator. Missing is the ever important A/C plus heated front windshield.
Performance, Fuel Economy and Price
The three most important attributes separating our two contenders.
Unfortunately, the Style + cannot be equipped with the ECOnetic’s 89 HP, 1.6L TDCi. You have to move to the Zetec S for that engine even though the OEM price differential between the two would largely depend on which engine size is more popular thus achieving economy of scale first. That being said, the Zetec + is not available with the Econetic’s 1.6L and takes a rather severe performance penalty because of it. The ECOnetic takes approximately 12 seconds from 0 to 60 mph vs. the Style + in a little under 15. That hurts.
The ECOnetic has a European NEDC (New European Drive Cycles) combined rating of 63 mpgUS which equates to approximately 52 mpgUS on the 08 EPA. The Style + on the other hand with its .2L smaller TDCi turbo-diesel achieves 56 mpgUS combined on the NEDC or approximately 47 mpgUS on the 08 EPA.
And then we have the two vehicles showroom floor pricing.
The ECOnetic’s base MSRP is $15,707 vs. the Style + at $15,060 USD. The ECOnetic needs to include the A/C and heated windshield to match the Style +. This option costs $750 USD. The total price differential comes to $1,397 USD.
10% better FE for an approximate 10% increase in price. It appears Ford was sharpening their pencils when introducing the Econetic and not for the betterment of the consumer or the environment given the differential. If price and FE are near the top of a Europeans new car purchase list, the ECOnetic no matter how excellent the real world 52 mpg US is, the 47 mpg US real world rated 1.4L TDCi appears to be more attractive on a total cost of ownership basis.
And to reiterate a common theme about America’s aversion to diesel engines, the Fiesta’s gasoline to TDCi turbo-diesel premium is only $1,400 USD. An emissions package to meet Tier II/Bin5 would add thousands to that price but it just goes to show what Europeans have available to them while we can only sit back and watch. Who here would not enjoy a 40 + percent increase in FE for an extra $1,400 even if Diesel costs $0.80 more per gallon here in the States?
