View Full Version : NOT FOR SALE: 2006 Prius. How much would you pay?
TheForce 10-22-2008, 05:50 PM My friend and I were arguing back and forth about how much I could get out of my Prius with all the mods I have done to it. I say I could get about 40k-45k out of it and maybe even push 50k. My friend says about 30k-35k maybe even lower. I want to hear from everyone on here what they would pay for my 2006 Prius. Be honest when you vote.
Here is my short ad to get you to buy my Prius.

brick 10-22-2008, 06:51 PM I hate to say it but your friend is probably right. One could have the same thing brand new for well under $40k, so used you are looking at a great deal less. I think something like $32k might be fair if you get a really enthusiastic buyer. Less once the Gen. III hits dealers.

Yeah, but... that doesn't really take into account the Hymotion battery. That's 10k worth of investment right there.
worthywads 10-22-2008, 08:19 PM No way on 50K
Without any mods it's probably worth 24-25K.
Most of the mods don't really add to the resale value, except the hymotion battery. You don't get the full cost of that back so low 30s is about right.
brick 10-22-2008, 08:33 PM Yeah, but... that doesn't really take into account the Hymotion battery. That's 10k worth of investment right there.
I figured ~$23k for the car, ~$9k for the slightly depreciated battery. The thing about cars is that add-ons almost never translate to as much resale value as they cost to install. I figure the hymotion kit is an exception since this car would only attract someone who would appreciate that. The other accessories, while very nicely done, are more of a taste thing.
bestmapman 10-22-2008, 08:41 PM I've seen Jay's car up close and it has additional value that is not apparent if you havn't seen the car.
It would have to be a specialty buyer, but I hink he has a gem.
hobbit 10-22-2008, 11:50 PM I shudder to think of the *time* value some of us have put into
our cars, but I know my weird set of add-ons wouldn't have nearly
as much value to someone else. What's priceless is the learning
experience it's helped create for the community, but that's not
what a prospective buyer would be looking for. I guess I'll just
have to run my car into the ground...
.
The same "your mods ain't my mods" philosophy probably crops up
in any other branch of car enthusiasm. I bet the extreme ricers
don't make back anywhere near what they invest if/when they go
to sell off their projects either...

Kacey Green 10-23-2008, 12:19 AM Definitely would only sell that particular car private party, I'd say $35-40k if I were in the market for a Prius again and if it has Nav, the package numbers change way too often on that car from year to year. I even had Toyota Dealership employees not believe me when they asked my package number and I'd always reply both Package 9 and Package BC, they didn't believe the nine but understood BC.
Shiba3420 10-23-2008, 02:57 PM A limited number of people might pay a good dollar for it, but it might not even get the standard price of a used 2006 prius with those mods, but I like it.
Someone getting taking a loan to pay for it might have problems since the bank will probably see if value at the lower end.
mparrish 10-23-2008, 03:24 PM <snark>Why would I pay more than $30k for a car that you have to be bothered to plug-in? Gas prices are going down and electricity ain't free anyway.</snark>
Seriously, it's a beautiful car. I'd pay what it's worth. But the average Joe? $30-35 tops.
Wait 5 years though and ask him again, when we all know what PHEV means.
phoebeisis 10-23-2008, 04:33 PM You've really narrowed the # of Prius buyers who would even consider it.
Toyota would attempt to say you voided the warranty if anything went wonky with the Hybrid system. Yes, maybe you could eventually get them to see things your way, but most folks aren't up for that sort of potential battle.Mods of any sort generally decrease the value of a car. It is always better to pull aftermarket stuff off and sell it separately(if possible). Dead stock it would be worth maybe $21000 or so.
The gasoline drop has lessened the value of your car-and of every other Prius. The economy tanking has dropped the number of techy/green types that would pay more than the price of a full warranty new Prius.
The new model- larger but better FE- Prius will be out soon-drops the value of all Prius.
I'm guessing about $28000 or so- a couple thousand $$ more than a new pk 7 would sell for now.
Now if gas spikes to $5, it might be worth $40,000.
I don't think I've ever met anyone who undervalued his car when it became time to sell it (myself included).
Wrong time to sell.

hobbit 10-23-2008, 06:13 PM Y'know, when these threads show up identically here and on PC
I can get really confused. I went looking for my own post on
PC earlier and was sitting there, "huh, did someone delete it?"
and then finally realized I'd dropped it in here instead.
.
No, I don't know what else you could do without forcing everyone
to sign up at one or the other site and check it routinely...

I post on both sites just to confuse you! :D :p
Aftermarket modifications almost never add value to a car. That's the way the game is played, unfortunately, so you'd do better to part out all of the aftermarket mods and go back to stock before you sell.
voodoo22 10-24-2008, 06:58 AM Mods never result in enough extra money on resale to make them a good investment, but mods are worth every penny if you love your car because of them. I wouldn't pay over $20k for a used car which I could buy brand new with no mods for a few thousand more, unless the mods were all covered by warranty etc.
Awesome looking car by the way, I can see you put a lot of sweat and blood into it.
some_other_dave 10-24-2008, 01:01 PM I am not very interested in any Prius. The 59 LMPG is somewhat attractive, but I wouldn't pay more than $10K (if that!) for the privilege.
Any Prius is far too new for my tastes. It's too large, too heavy, too complex, and has too many seats! :D
It might be worth $30K to the "right" buyer, but the number of people who qualify as that is going to be very small indeed!
