View Full Version : Buying at Sunoco from now on

I normally buy at a Sunoco by my house. Occasionally I would fill up at a Citgo by work since I have to drive right past it on the way to work, a block away. Well I noticed my gas mileage dumped for no apparent reason. Well I saw the reason on Friday when I was heading to work. The Citgo changed suppliers and I have no idea who this company is.
Looked like a local independent gasoline distribution company. Not the other company that they have been using for at least two or three years. Normally there wasn't a detectable difference in gas mileage between Sunoco and the gas this local Citgo was selling.
Well there is a difference now. I checked and there is no mention if it is E10 or not.
The price per gallon is the same between the two brands. I won't be buying gas at this station anymore.

It is my understanding that, if a pump has E10, it must say so. At least that's the case in NY.
In my area, all the Sunocos sell E10.

The Sunoco's around me are still selling straight gas.

A similar thing happened to me about a month or two ago. I used to visit one particular Exxon in my area because it always had a fair price, but one day I pulled up to get gas and it was Mercury. I thought Mercury was a car, not a filling station!

For those of you who aren't already surrounded by E10, get ready to have your MPG to drop. I lost about 10-15% and I've got a well tuned, modern car. :( E10 is $3.73 as of this morning while the national average is $3.60.

E10 is just extra profit! Not only does it cost producers less out of the pump (compare: cutting a drug to extend it's sale quantity at the cost of quality), were using more to go the same distance as before while the price stays the same or is higher. It's Crack Marketing at it's finest.

There are several states that don't require labeling of the pumps for E10 or less. A quick google search shows the following
District of Columbia - DC, Indiana - In, Kansas - KS, Kentucky - KY, Louisiana - LA, Maryland - MD, Michigan - MI, Minnesota - MN, Missouri - MO, Nevada - NV, New Jersey - NJ, North Carolina - NC, Ohio - OH, Oklahoma - OK.
So if you are buying gas from these states, you just don't know...

I have never seen a pump in michigan that labels for E10. I had a super crappy tank this last time around. Hard to tell if it was all the city driving, newer tires, or maybe I got a tank of E10? It would be nice to be sure what I was putting in my tank though.

I remember having a problem with a Citgo in CT. I ran a couple of tanks through the Accord and mileage tanked, went back to the usual Shell and Sunoco and the mileage went back up. Didn't make any sense to me (all gas is E10 there) but I haven't used a Citgo since, even though it was the cheapest gas available.

You do know if you're in Minnesota. ALL of their gas is E10 no matter where you go. Wisconsin requires labeling and as far as I can tell, in the past 6 months we've gone to about 98% E10 prevalence. I only know of one station in the state where all grades are available as straight gas, and many only have ethanol free gas in the 93 octane grade.

Citgo's owned by Venezuela. Don't buy from them.
