Hi all, just returned yesterday from Hybridfest and beyond. The highlight was meeting so many great people! Many thanks to all; I felt welcomed and had a very nice time.

On Sunday 7-22-06 I left Madison early and drove to Oshkosh to watch the planes land for a few hours (I'm a pilot and used to go there annually). Then I continued my journey north to Duluth, Int Falls, then into Canada. I went through Kenora Ont, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Meadow Lake, Cold Lake, Ft St John, Ft Nelson, then turned south to Prince George, then down to Vancouver for a large car show! Over 70,000 people were at the show, and my Insight was in "display mode" and I was bombarded with MANY questions.

In Vancouver there are LOTS of Prius taxi cabs, and people generally seem pretty enviro conscious. I talked to quite a few Prius owners, and referred several of them to this web site for tips on fuel economy.

My 2005 Insight performed perfectly on the trip. Total miles: 4822 Gallons of gas used: 49.02 MPG: 98.36 No flat tires, no problems of any kind except head winds much of the way, which forced me to slow down to remain in lean-burn. Now it's time to change my oil: just 2.6 qts, amazing!

Northern Canada was beautiful, and at one point there were 2 mooses standing in the middle of the road. After taking a photo, I honked them so I could proceed. In Canada I was careful NOT to use gasoline containing methanol (wood alcohol) I was told that SHELL is one of the best brands. Oh yeah, I accidentally ran into one stretch of highway that was gravel for 40 miles. I slowed way down to protect the car from stone chips on the underbody, etc.

Downtown Vancouver was also beautiful. English bay (Burrard Inlet) was abuzz with commercial float planes landing and departing. They have scheduled routes to Victoria and Nanaimo and also tour flights. Then I drove the last 7 hours home. While crossing the border back into the US, the customs agent asked lots of question..............about the Insight! He was amazed at the technology!

Hi Bill:

___I only wish I could have been along for your ride of a lifetime! Best friends, best Insight on the planet, and the best scenery anyone could possibly imagine. One of these days I am going to set a kitchen timer in your car so that every 5 minutes, it dings and tells you to take a pic for the rest of the word to see ;)

___Your entire week viewing the best scenery that both the US and Canada had to offer, let alone Hybridfest and the Vancouver car show must have been a very memorable experience. I hope Cynthia can come along for the ride the next time you head our way as I know a camera’s memory would have been filled time and time again with the great scenery as well as stories that would last a lifetime.

___Good Luck

Thanks guys, it was great to meet you Tom, as well as your wife and kids, too! By the way, I did check the metric display after Wayne's run in my car. It said 1.3 for whatever that's worth......

I wanted to report, Wayne, that on my entire 4822 mile drive, over the rockies and many other hills, my pack never got below 3 bars from full. I ascend the slopes being careful to use only very minimal assist (if any) and turn the headlights on so the pack quickly re-charges the bar it just used. That way, right when cresting the hill I can FAS, knowing I have a full pack. Again, lots of air in the tires is KEY, as the car will just roll so much farther in the FAS mode.................

Hi Bill:

___I sure wish you had somehow rigged a video camera up showing how you took her up the massive ascents! It would make a great Insight article for the rest of the world to see and understand what an Insight is actually capable of as well as how you coaxed it out of her even while climbing!

___Did I read your post above correctly that you saw 1.3 l/100 Km in the metric display? I was ticked knowing I was so out of the Insight loop to not to have remembered to swap over to see her actual. Boy do I love that kind of number and especially because your Insight was the first to see it :D

___Tom, here you go: Odometer / Trip Meter / Fuel Efficiency Meter (http://www.insightcentral.net/encyclopedia/eninstruments.html)

Billy,

That is some very serious miles at 4,822 mile trip. I thought 1,300 miles for my little trip was alot. Oh well I am getting old I guess.

Hey, before I forget that is one outstanding beautiful Bright red Insight with the Black Graphics on it. :woot: Nice:

Hey Billy,

I'll be here unless Wayne & Tom can Dream up some reason for me to go back to Chicago. :D In my case it would not take much on their part. Great Guys in Chicago (IMO). :Banane48:
