Just filled up the Ranger. 380 miles, 18 gal. for 21.1 mpg. Im going to drive it home. Add some fuel stabilizer and park the hunk of junk under a pecan tree. I hope I dont have to fill it for another 6 months!!!!!!

I just wish a lot of guys in my neighboorhood came to your conclusion unless they are really hauling stuff in them....

I have the same problem with my toyota p/u. In the city I get ~23mpg, on the highway I get ~23mpg, towing 2300lbs in the city I get ~23mpg, hauling ~1000lbs in the bed on the highway I get ~23mpg. I've concluded it's great for hauling. :woot:

Hi Guys:

___Oh how I wish you two owned sticks … The Ford Auto’s (Toyota’s Auto’s and ICE control on the non-hybrid’s is not much better) suck but with a stick, I think you would find it to be a much more pleasurable experience … Although the Accord and Ranger weigh within 100 #’s of one another, that 2.3 in the Ranger can pull from 1,100 on up whereas the Accord’s 2.4 doesn’t even come out of its stupor until 1,400 +. In other words, I really enjoy driving the Ranger around town and especially when the bed is filled with debris or pulling the Landscape trailer. The SG-II comes out of the Accord this week and goes into the Ranger for some FE testing in it and given its past accomplishments without any type of i or aFCD, I am really looking forward to its real world capabilities. Hopefully Billy will come on board this evening and tell you what he has seen in his own 06 Ranger w/ a stick and the SG-I attached!

Mine is a 5mt wayne and its a horrible mpg truck. Think Im going to drop a 289 in it or get rid of it. The 2.5L engine is horid. The trammy is bad also. Only constent fluid changes have kept it working. Shifts like a F-350.

Awful truck. Soooooo glad i dont have to drive it much now days.

Hi Psy:

___When you are within 2 or 3 minutes of breaking every piece of glass in the poor thing out or filling its block with lead, let me know and I will come out and take it off your hands. I know she has to have some capability you have not had the time to use yet is all ;)

I have a 97 Ford F-150 4WD long bed with a V-6 ICE and manual that gives me 26MPG in the summer, 23MPG in the winter on a regime of mostly short-distance local driving (carrying trash to the dump, hauling 28 square bales or 2 round bales of hay in the back tp the farm, etc.) when I use hypermiling techniques. This drops to 16MPG when pulling the stock trailer or the 5th wheel RV.

I tore into the Ranger last night. Checked the EGR, PCV, O2 sensor and vacume lines. Ive already put new plugs, wires, and all sorts of maint items on it.

This truck has drank gas since it was new. It was at Ford dealers alot when new to figure this and other issues out. With no resolve. Its never thrown a CEL or not started.

I was thinking to myself in bed lastnight about this. I wonder if the cam timing could be off afew degrees? I didnt check it when I replaced the timing belt, and I should of.

At any rate I dumped a can of Seafoam in the tank lastnight to help stablize the fuel and then ran half a can thru the brake vacume line, then let it set for 5 mins, ran it and then did it again. This is only about the 6th time Ive done this in its life time. It seemed to respond good to it. It got a bit more pep and pulled the a/c better.

who knows.

I wonder what kind of evaporative emissions controls are on that truck? Since it sits so long it makes me wonder if some of that fuel (though not the gallons that we're talking about) is lost while it sits. Probably a dumb idea, but it has been awfully warm lately. What model year is that truck?

Did you check the engine coolant temp sensor? Maybe she thinks she's cold and wants to run rich all the time.

Man I wish my Suburban would get 21 MPG. It got 10.2 on the last tank. My Insight got 102.2 on the last tank. The Insight went 10X as far on a gallon of gas. Last year we drove the Burban 3000 miles and averaged 11 MPG so used 272 gallons. Last year we drove the Insight 13500 miles and averaged 90 MPG so used 150 gallons. The Insight went 10500 FARTHER and used 122 gallons LESS. My old airplane is even worse. It's a 1947 amphibian flying boat that goes 104 mph and uses 14.8 gph, that works out to 7 MPG. It doesn't get flown very much.....Louis

Its a 2000 year model.

You can hypermile it to 30 mpg. Its a awful pain with speeds 50 mph and lower. It coast like a brick in mortar. EPA is 27 mpg hwy I think. Its never got close to that in so called normal driving.

It has the middle gear in the rear end. It would never pull the high gear. You would have to smoke the clutch to make it move with the higher gear in it.

The evap. system as been checked many times by Ford.

I just dont know.
Looks at 44 mag. grining

I need some "junk carrying,Home Depot, evacuation stuff' capability.I' considering buying my next door neighbor's 1998 S-10 pickup-68000 miles-but in a wreck recently. Its main virtue is CHEAP-$1800 with a camper top-and it does run and the AC works I'm told. Now it needs a new windshield($200) and some other body work I can half ass manage since he already bought the parts.
Hate to step on this thread, but just how good/bad POS are S-10s? I checked CR-it has a terrible reliability record.
It would mainly be used as the 3rd vehicle. It wouldn't see more than 1500 miles per year-unless we evacuated. Obviously, I would make a judgement on its long trip reliability before using it for an evac vehicle. It would be the 3rd vehicle in an evacuation, and there would be anything in it that couldn't be left on the side of the road if it came to it.
Getting it would mean selling the 2001 Prizm(Corolla) a very reliable vehicle with just 29000 miles.Part of the motivation would be the $5000= I would pocket from the exchange($7500 for Prizm- I have been more or less offered $7500 for it)
Thanks.Charlie

We use to have a 1998 S-10, I4, 5MT here as a shop truck. It broke alot! It was the most uncomfy truck/car Ive ever driven. The bench seat was awful. I couldnt set in it for more than 15 mins. Hurt my lower back bad. It seemed to get good mpg and it shifted good. Just broke alot.

Why not just rent a truck at homedepot when you need one?

As far as evacuation goes how about putting a hitch on one of the other vehicles and just getting a small trailer that you can detatch when you don't need it?
