Last and best tank was 43.5 mpg. Then the car was a victim of a road-raging pickup driver.:( Won't go into the details except to say he put me in the ditch upside down. Se la vi. Happy to be alive and hope to find another 40+mpg car with the insurance money. Anyone know if toyota corollas are as solid in a wreck as this civic proved to be? I'm leaning toward something that doesn't have an interference engine. I'm so glad I hadn't sunk the $500 in the civic as it was 5000 miles past the due date for one.

On a positive note the wife got the best mileage yet on the way to retrieve me in the Pathfinder, 21.7mpg! Still, the thought of having been able to go twice as far...

Sorry to hear! :ccry:

But I'm happy to hear how it protected you, since I'm in the same car myself.

I think the Corolla still has a cam chain, so the interference/non interference isn't as important. It isn't likely to break.

Luck,

Corolla 200-2004 (at least) 1.8 L engine is not shown as an interference type in this handy resource:

Bummer!

For the record, it is "c'est la vie" ;)

Thanks for all the condolences. Besides new friends here I was somewhat surprised how many folks were concerned about my well being.

Thank you too for the spelling correction MikeT. My daughter would have caught that too. Not as embarrassing as the correction a few years ago of my near life long pronunciation of queue as "kway" instead of the proper "kyu":o.

I'm still researching what to replace the civic with, whether another civic or perhaps a corolla. A recent thread had great info about engines and the models with tall gearing for the civics but I can't find much info on corollas(prizms) except did find a wikipedia page. Found a 2000 Insight that looked good but it is 600 miles away! For Toyota having sold a lot of corollas there seem to be a lot more civics around. I've had good reliability with both brands. Sure wish I had more than the two or three weeks that insurance allows for the rental car to do my car shopping!

Again, thanks all for any suggestions and your kind comments.

Sorry to hear about the accident and the way it happened. I hope you're not too distraught as I would be a mess if something that horrible happened to me on the road.

By all means, if you can get an Insight and it works for you, buy it! A 600 mile drive is a small price to pay for a car that will get you TWICE the mileage of your Civic and one that's discontinued and sure to become a collector. Plus the 600 mile return trip would be a great chance to get to know your new best friend. That Insight doesn't happen to be in La Crosse, WI does it? If that's the one you're looking at (Blue) then I've seen it personally and its a pretty good one as Insights go.

No it was south and I just found out it's been sold. La Crosse is even closer! Do you know where I can get info on that one? The Tx deal seemed very reasonable as most all others I've seen are asking a premium of 3-5000 dollars over KBB. I found that a battery pack only runs 1300 or so? Wouldn't be a deal breaker if the price was right. Thanks

Eight years and a week ago, my 88 CRX HF was totaled.

Apparently a distracted driver bumped a driver that in turn bumped into me....the ruptured oil gasket went the next day.

Although not totaled, I traded in an 86 CRX HF rather than repair it after a drunk rearended me running a red light.

Lot of people that should not be allowed to drive...

Satchel, check out the following site and browse their inventory of used vehicles:

Honda Motorwerks (http://www.hondamotorwerks.com/ou/lacrosse-honda)

They have exactly one in stock and that's the one Justin was referring to in his post. He is also correct that it is well worth the purchase price if you are willing to drive it gently and accept that has a lot less power and insulation (noisier) than other vehicles.

By the way, that shade of blue is fantastic! Of course, I'm biased because mine is that color. ;)

Whoa, love the blue, but 10 grand more than I'll have to spend and it's something like 5 grand over blue book. Thanks Sean for lead. Have found a 98 HX with a lot of miles but supposed to be stock and clean. Also may look at another 2000 VP identical to my other except missing moonroof and different color, if they still have it.

Would like to get out of the rental since the agent convinced me to take the CDW for 12.99 a day! Insurance is paying the rest but two to three weeks would add up to a small chunk of change(still half what a deductible charge from insurance would be). Glad I did because I've spotted some dings in hood and a paint chip that we didn't see in the rain and they'd probably have dinged me for it!

Sorry about your loss Satchel. Glad you're ok.
I can highly recommend the civic but if you can get your hands on an Insight then jump at the chance.

Thanks vtec-e. Good to hear from the old country. Family left Killymallaght back in the 1840s.

Wife didn't think she'd like the two dr HX but I'm toying with the idea of getting it and the 4dr for her! That'd let us park the old Pathfinder(which I can't bear to part with, a love affair of seventeen years and 239,000 miles).

Don't know why for sure but all the Insights seem to be at least a day's drive of here!

Bought the near twin of old car and seeing encouraging(as in better) numbers on SGII. Thumbing through the manual to set clock I found a note that timing belt and water pump were changed at 104500, 3500 ago :woot: Even have the original window sticker. I think I found a good one! Considering the old car spent the first half of its life in the salt in Michigan and this one came from Texas and has a new belt/pump, I feel like I've traded up.
Now to look into the HX, I want it too!

Hi Satchel,
Good luck with the new wheels!
I've looked up Killymallacht and all i can find is a football club. Did you hear where it might be?

ollie

Edit: I found it. It's in Derry, up in the north of the country:http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mitchell001/killymallaght.html

How's she cuttin' vtec-e? You found my history there. #7, Mitchell of the hill married a Mitchell of the town :eyebrow:. A.C. Mitchell was my great-grandfather.
Dave is a distant relative who my wife has corresponded with about genealogy. He was the source of our knowledge of Killymallaght. I hope to get to travel there someday.
Let's have no acting the maggot about the 4Ggrandparents fellas(and wans):D.
