Hi All,
I too lurked for a while, gathering intel on hypermiling.
But then I dove in. Rather refreshing I might add.
I really dig getting double the mpg my old 94 TransSport provided. I used to take the highway to work here in suburban Kansas City, but fifth gear on the Spectra at the prevailing 70mph + is 3K rpm or better. Too hot for me. I stick to the major arterials with their 35-45 mph, get 'er in 5th and keep it cool.
I have a route to/from work (12.25 mi) with a few long minimal grades. On a good day (light traffic) & with FAS I get 2.5 to 3.5 miles free each way. Especially effective when coming up on traffic signals. Light turns red just as you get close? No sweat, the engine is already ready off. Red lights used to drive me crazy, now I don't give a rat's behind (helped my blood pressure too!)
I got to 37+ before the heat came on in July & I needed the AC. With the weather cooling off, I'll see my numbers rise again.
The goal is 40 mpg. ScanGauge is budgeted into next paycheck. That ought to help.
