I wonder what the Miles Per Calorie would be on a package deliver vehicle like this :p

So does anyone actually have a trailer for their bike? I've often wondered what those are like. Are the destabilizing or can you transport groceries in them?

Depends whether he's using P&G (pedal & glide). Can't FAS without a medical team to revive him.

Nice cartoon! Are you related to the cartooniste?

I had a burley bike trailer when the kids were young. It had regular bike tires (24in?) and the hitch could swivel n any direction.
Just coursing along at a leisurely pace it pulled so smooth you could forget it was there. It was not streamlined, so at faster speeds it felt like you were pulling a parachute.

I think the trick is to get a trailer with large tires.

Another thread on bike trailers:

There is a local bike delivery service with a trailer bigger than the one in the cartoon. Not as tall, but longer.

Can they be used to transport groceries? Yes. Several of us here do it regularly.
Can they destabilize the bike? Yes, as BailOut can attest. They can also be very stable. Depends on the bike, trailer type, and how it is loaded.

lightfoot - No, I'm not related to the cartoonist, but I do find her funny.

Bike123, Thanks for the link. I'll check out those trailers.

Well in an hour of intensive physical activity the body burns about 600 calories (more or less). Lets say that in an hour he averages about 20 miles an hour on the bike, which means he goes 20 miles (*really hard* math skills at work). So 20 miles / 600 calories = .03333333 miles per calorie.

Now that would seem to be pedal-hypermiling.

The previous cycling estimates I've heard are equivalent to 0.0167 to 0.029 miles per (k)calorie, depending on speed / rider size / bike type (traditional upright bike without fairing) (various sources can be wildly different).
