2005 Civic DX Value Package w/automatic tranny. Thought my last tank (47.x MPG) was a fluke, but I managed this today on my trip to work and back:

The pressure's on - not sure if I can keep this up for the entire tank :o

how long is your commute? is this city or hwy?

my commute is 72.x miles highway roundtrip, and I try to keep the speed around 55mph.

factory dunlops set at 45psi; 2oz of FP60 used at each fillup, cold air intake mod (shop vac hose routed to fog light)

Just purchased a 4'x8' sheet of black coroplast - will be experimenting with that soon...

Wow, that's just incredible! Congratulations! Maybe I should've gone for the regular Civic after all?!? (I still love my HCH2). :) I look forward to seeing your progress over the coming months.

Hi Lindermant:

___If you would not mind, forget about the FP60 on the next tank and remove the CAI. She is worth even more without messing around. Take her to the limits and 70 + should be in the bag over a segment. 60 – 65 over a tank. You simply have to trust that you are smarter and far better for your ride than all the gimmicks and I can guarantee you that you are!

___I let an untrained Journalist drive to O’Hare in the Accord on Sunday morning. 25 miles from dead cold without any advanced techniques and he nailed 51.3 on the SG-II and 52.3 on the aFCD. No “stuff” in the tank, no CAI, no WAI, and no messing around other then lowest speed 45 and highest 58 on a 55 mph limited Interstate. A little guidance was all that was needed and that was it … You really have to trust me on this as you have a long ways to go yet without the crutches.

___Good Luck

___Wayne

lol so funny you have the exact same car as mine just i drive a coupe and a 5spd ;)

man your engine compartment is freaking CLEAN compared to mine. Man you sure keep your car in the best shape.

So what's your rpms at 100 km/h? mine is at 2600 rpm :(

and keep me updated on the coroplast ;)

You could swap to a Civic HX transmission if you want a lower cruising RPM. I'm not sure if the 2001-05 gear ratios are exactly the same, but the 96-00 Civic HX 5-speed cruises at 2300rpm at 62mph, which is a little improvement at least. Often you can find transmissions from the SOHC Hondas very cheap at junkyards. http://www.car-part.com/ is a good one to try, too. It includes Canadian junkyards.

I do my best to give the engine compartment a wipe-down each time I wash the car - it's been a while, maybe I'll go and work on that tonight (the pic posted is several months old).

I'll have to get back to you on what RPM's I'm turning at 60MPH (100KMH) - never really paid much attention to it. Final drive for a 2004 coupe 5spd is either 4.11 (VP/LX) or 4.41 (EX). Final drive for my 2005 coupe auto is 4.11 (VP)...

As far as the coroplast, I've got plans for a engine cradle belly pan (like the hybrid); also looking into something to guide the air around my tires, something along the lines of what basjoos did, but still tinkering with cardboard mock-ups. Not quite certain I want to go the full belly pan route like krousdb, but you never know ;)

if you're swapping 5spd's, look for one from a civic hybrid as it's final drive ratio is 3.60 (2001-2005 HX 5spd final drive is 3.84, hondanews.com didn't give specs for earlier than '01)

***EDIT*** found a link listing honda final drive ratios: http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/gearratiosdseries.htm
96-01 Civic HX final drive ratio is 3.772
92-95 Civic CX/VX final drive ratio is 3.250
88-91 CRX HF final drive ratio is 2.95

phil,

a correction to an earlier post of mine - the final drive for my 05 VP coupe auto is 4.07 (the 5spd is 4.11)

Yes the CX/VX tranny is sweet! I'm at 1800 at 55MPH. Still under 2000 at 60.

Hmm, that sounds very close to my Saturn tranny. I'm at 1900 at 55mph.
PS: Love the new smilies!:woot: Thanks to whoever got them.

My "to work" commute leg was yet another best. Before I get to the numbers, a brief rundown on what I changed overnight. I decided to try Wayne's (xcel) recommendation about the CAI; but rather than completely remove it, I simply unplugged it from my intake box and set it aside (so the intake is getting no help - it simply draws whatever air it can).

Per my scangauge, the intake air temp (IAT) reached 127F. With the CAI installed, the IAT hovered around 110F on days hotter than today.

That said, I drove to work today with the window cracked and no A/C (last two days I've had the A/C blasting). No A/C coupled with the CAI disengaged resulted in a 55.4 MPG segment! The tank avg is now at 49.7 MPG.

I'll post an update on my return home leg when I get home Sat morning. I'm beginning to wonder if I flubbed something up on my scangauge when I did the fillup, as my numbers have never been this high. We'll see how they hold up when I calculate it manually after my next fillup.

In the meantime... :woot:

Was your engine spinning the whole time or did you power it down while coasting?

Congratulations!

I have to keep telling myself that this is a four or five-seater that is breaking the 50mpg barrier!

delta,

it's a four seater in name only, I doubt I'd get any takers to sit back there ;)
