View Full Version : Most Hypermilers seem to be middle age to old(as in 60 old)
ELIJAH_CUMMINGS 08-25-2008, 01:13 PM I find it very odd that some of you old geezers actually take part in the community discussion here. Usually I thought this would be something that mostly middle age people would appreciate and benefit themselves to. Usually old geezers think this kind of thing is just retarded, given they come from an era of cheap gasoline.
Oh and why is it that I don't see a lot of young 20 year olds like myself come here? I guess we're mostly still in the "fast and furious" driving habits.
Moderator addendum: A somewhat trollish member became “Jerk of the Day” in less than three threads. One about everyone belonging to a particular religion, this one and another about CleanMPG’s purpose. What is the world coming to

Damionk 08-25-2008, 01:34 PM About a month and a half ago someone posted a "How old are you" poll. Surprisingly the last time I saw it most of the people that answered the poll were in their mid 20s.
ETA: Here is the poll. http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14636

Sorry the truth hurts old man!
lamebums 08-25-2008, 02:06 PM Sorry the truth hurts old man!
Um, back off. Seriously. And drop the smartass act. If it were anyone else you would have been banned by now.
First, Laurie is not an "old man".
Second, I've seen so many older people driving American sedans who at first glance may seem discombobulated but upon closer inspection are in fact coasting up to traffic lights, their houses, stop signs, etc. The era of cheap gas "they" lived in is likely twice the reason to save gas.
And I'm not old, either: in fact I turned 19 barely two months ago.

Elijah Cummings - Whatever has gotten into you needs to stop at once!!!
I say this before you find the third group of people to ridicule (this is the second in only an hour).
It's hard enough to bring people together without someone intentionally dividing us over color, creed, age, etc.
MaxxMPG 08-25-2008, 02:19 PM I'm not sure if the thread here started with an intent of being humorous, but I think it is not heading in a good direction.
I've never met Laurie, but she will always have a warm spot in my heart because she was the first to welcome me when I first posted my intro way back when. She shares our enthusiasm for hypermiling and is always willing to share knowledge and experience.
I am "middle age", but other hypermilers I know in my area span from 18 to 70. The age of the driver is not relevant in hypermiling discussions, other than a possible correlation to years and miles driven, with relative driving experience and lifetime fuel economy numbers.

I don't like this at all. Cleanmpg (along with Priuschat) has been remarkable to me for its civility compared to most forums.
I do have a sense of humor. You might be trying to be funny. But, if so, you are not. Which makes me have to put with lame humor or offensive language. The use of the word retarded is also pushing it....
Say something controversial, go for it. Say it with intelligence.
Chuck 08-25-2008, 02:28 PM I Say something controversial, go for it. Say it with intelligence. Not like in this thread - he lacked civility and a few other things.
Don't be suprized if it's locked or deleted.

Exactly. This is why I choose to post here rather than other forums that do not share the same level of enthusiasm and professionalism.
In reviewing the posts of the member who started this thread, I see many reactionary comments to controversial topics other than hypermiling. What I don't see is many words describing vehicle, driving conditions, results of efforts to increase FE, and so on. I hope that the member in question reads the words here and refocuses his efforts on our shared passion for increasing fuel efficiency and lowering emissions.
msirach 08-25-2008, 02:34 PM As a moderator here, let me say that further slanderous posting WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. He has 3 infractions as of now.
Chuck 08-25-2008, 02:47 PM EJ did not know when to stop - he is banned.
To support what Mike just said, lately a few have been posting insults (subtle and blatant) as if it's an inalienable right. We are smart enough to disagree without coming down to that.

I agree as well. The thread can be kept on the board, if for no other reason but that it serves to show guests and new members that CleanMPG will deal swiftly and justly with members who engage in personal attacks. It provides an illustration of how things can go wrong in a forum that is open to all, and how professionals can warn offenders and then eventually take action as required.

thank you, and lamebums. you would have thought the avatar would have at least given him a hint. jerk. happy banland.
i just wish you would have waited long enough for me to b#tch-slap him first.
Chuck 08-25-2008, 03:09 PM I don't think the rest of the staff will mind but I'll hint at the email of the troller that started this thread: foralljerks@-----
Use your imagination on "jerks". ;)

Laurie, no need to do so. It would be analogous to yelling at a pound of cole-slaw. Might be cathartic but not productive. You are a valued member of CleanMPG and a very nice guy (oh wait, looked at the avatar and the name)... ;) So you're among friends, as evidenced by the others who came to your defense, and so you can enjoy the cole slaw without having to yell at it.
I am surprised that we made it to several pages and Godwin's Law never came into play. It shows how we can keep things professional without going for the cheap shots.
PaleMelanesian 08-25-2008, 03:23 PM Maxx! You are on a roll today! :D Don't stop... ;)
Chuck 08-25-2008, 03:29 PM Laurie,
This troll was going full throttle and at least four moderators were in hot pursuit (bestmapman, msirach, PaleMelanesian, myself) He made it effortless to nab.
The really effective trollers "hypermile"...they are under the radar moving slowly, seeming like honest contributing members, finding legitimate hot topics...
lightfoot 08-25-2008, 03:30 PM Maxx, couldn't agree more.
Does it seem that the more civil and the more professionally run a forum is, the more it becomes a target for trollers and people who just want to argue?
laurieaw 08-25-2008, 03:35 PM Laurie, no need to do so. It would be analogous to yelling at a pound of cole-slaw.
ROFLMAO.....good point. and thanks for the nice comment earlier in the thread. i'm not a bad guy once you get to know me. :p

Does it seem that the more civil and the more professionally run a forum is, the more it becomes a target for trollers and people who just want to argue?
I think that it's not so much that the civil/professional forums are more of a target as much as the trollers and firestarters are just more obvious when they inject themselves into pleasant and informational debates.
When I see something that appears to be an attack-mode post, I check other posts by the same person. Maybe I am just reading it wrong. Not getting an inside joke. Maybe they're having a really bad day and it is reflected in their choice of words. You never know. When I read the original post, I was actually thinking that there could have been a recent TV show or movie that made fun of people over 60, and that the thread was started as a poorly worded attempt at following the plotline. Then it seemed to just be a blind attack.
Then I read the previous posts by the same user. And I saw that most were confrontational replies to other hot topics, mostly political rather than hypermiling-related, and at least one had profanity that Wayne had to remove. None had the "this is how I hypermile", or even "how do I hypermile" topics. So I started to wonder what the member's motivation was for joining and posting. At this point, we'll never know.
I always appreciate the moderators of CleanMPG, and their efforts to maintain the standards that make coming here a pleasure.

Man, I miss all the fun, I woulda paid to see that. Or better yet turn him into a newt or a puking pumpkin. Just thinking out loud here, but it wouldn't it be nicely symbolic if his avatar was (and all banned troll avatars?) turned into the puking pumpkin as a content warning?

So here I am just a bit closer to 26 than 27 and I find that the few gray hairs on the old dome haven't impacted anything adversely. I'm pretty sure we've been programmed to head for the coloring agents when, in fact, a touch of contrast may be a benefit in certain departments if you know what I mean.
/not crying
MaxxMPG 08-26-2008, 09:49 PM Hair color is not really all that important. What is important is that we're still breathing and able to share these thoughts. Aging sucks, but it beats the alternative.
I am "middle age", about 3/4 of the way to the "60" that the original troll defined as "old". Most of my hair fell out, so I look a bit like Mr.Clean but without the earring and with sleeves on my t-shirt, and what's left of the hair has some gray in it. But like an old Honda, everything still works, so I'm not complaining.
The important formula to strive for: MPG > AGE. :D
laurieaw 08-26-2008, 10:13 PM well, i am OVER the 60 that the OP considered old. and that just chaps my hide, since i don't feel it. i ride my horse almost daily, do a half ass hypermile to work every day, build things in the barn, haul sacks of grain, am a photographer, heat with a wood stove, can still cook if i feel like it.....i somehow in my doddering ways (to hear the OP tell it), i manage to keep fed on a daily basis almost 50 chickens, 5 geese, 2 dozen ducks and three horses. so......age is a state of mind....

I had no gray hairs whatsoever at your age.
Now I have a few. Not nearly enough to prevent sunburn.
That dew rag under my bicycle helmet is only to prevent red stripes on the chrome.

Let's take this thread for what it's worth - a loser at a college had nothing to do than start this and a couple of other threads. When he becomes 60, he will probably still be a loser.

Back in the '80s, SNL had a series of cartoon shorts titled, "Tippy Turtle". The theme song played at the start of each episode, "Hey Tippy Turtle walkin' down the street. Tell us what you're gonna do... 'First I'm gonna bother everybody I meet. Then I'll prob'ly go home and get drunk'." The drunken turtle would select a victim, annoy them, and then laugh and the episode would conclude.
Sounds like the daily workload of the average troll.
I can look for an image of the annoying turtle to use for future trolls, to serve as a warning for readers so they know what they're getting into. In the thread list on the forums, instead of the little question mark or a smiley, a little turtle icon means you're in for a brawl. :)
Anyone under 30 is still a thumb sucker.
Hey...(just turned 25, which means now I can run for Congress...yay?).
Just reading this thread has made me realise that a few of my posts have had a troll like quality. God i feel sick now. Sorry guys, i'll do better in the future. I'd be lost without cleanmpg.
But you have more than enough posts about your ride and commute and general discussion that it easily cancels those few troll-posts out.
Besides, I weigh in pretty heavily on controversial topics and challenge a lot of people. If I haven't been banned then there's no way you're getting banned. :D There are a few keys, in my mind, to be able to challenge someone's opinion and not be trolling.
- Never resort to personal attacks, just respond to their ideas.
- Always be able to admit the possibility that you are wrong and own up to it in the face of a new argument or new evidence.
- Provide some evidence to support your opinions, a little research goes a long way and helps your opinions have some weight.
- If you're going to be glib and sarcastic (and boy it can be fun), make sure that it will most likely be interpreted as such except by those with no sense of irony. Smilies and <glib> or <sarcasm> tags help to this end.
Honestly, I've found that a good way to weed out trollers and snuff out flamewars is to calmly and directly challenge their assertions with evidence to show that they're either wrong or missing a big part of the picture. Either they won't respond (snuffing the flamewar), they'll respond with a flame (showing that they are nothing more than a troll), or, and this is rare and usually only from members in good standing, they'll actually respond with something constructive to the conversation (win-win-win).
Lord Biron 09-22-2008, 09:49 PM How do you prevent him or her, from recreating a new account?
You banned his IP of his account location right?
but you can just use the .Tor network, or any other proxy or anonymous web service to use an IP of a ISP in, for example Poland, then Russia, etc etc etc.
openDNS + Sourceforge + Tor Network = Fun
Using TCP/IP Porocal, and Port 1023 if not stealth just DoS attack your local starbucks or library, and use their IP for awhile. The questions is, why would you want to? And who has that much time on their hands, just to be smug and moronic on a Automotive Forum for people who are sick of taking it?

Hi Lord Biron:
___Just the fact someone has to go through about 5-minutes of hoops to sign up only to be banned soon afterwards for a second time while continuing on their reckless way and usually in the same thread is enough to discourage. Sometimes. Only after the second time do we go after an IP locally. From the Far East, they get the ax as soon as they let loose with spam and such ;)

PTDixieGal 09-24-2008, 08:39 AM I was going to say...I'm only eleven years older than pdk. Mentally I feel like a twenty year old.
And I think that age is just a number, unless you are a thirty year old who acts like a thirty month old (just throwing out a number there as an example...I was going to use Cummings age but I don't think he would have taken the hint).
Gotta go...Dad just called. He and my brother and I are going fishing...it's the first time I've gone fishing since I caught that nasty ear infection and I've gotta get my Tiger and Rhino spincasting rods loaded up.

Chuck 09-25-2008, 01:36 PM The troller that started this thread is apparently a college student in Tulsa that apparently needs better study habits. ;) About two weeks after he joined, he got the urge to start this thread, another on semi drafting, still another anti-Semitic.
