View Full Version : For The Next Time Wayne Goes for a Record

So many afterthoughts.....

The Insight can display FE in metric.

So what?

It expresses FE in liters per 100 kilometers.

Different measurement, but expresses consumption - not distance traveled.

My theory is on Wayne's recent runs, the metric expression of his FE would have been precise, up to maybe 500mpg if at least ten miles were driven....

So next time, record both English and Metric readings - convert the metric to English.

Hi Chuck:

___After you mentioned the metric display, the lights went off in not my just my head but a few others as well. We were talking about this in chat last night and being a little rusty with the Insight, I did not even consider popping back to the metric display to get the actual!!!!!! When Linda and I get the chance to go out in her CVT, we will be sure to swap to the metric display once we have completed the course so as to get a good baseline to know what these little beauty's are really worth :D

___Good Luck and thanks for the tip.

Still another afterthought... :D

Could Prius drivers go metric to record runs over 99.9mpg?

Assmuing the idea of displaying metric to get a higher mpg reading is practical, I can see a few people buying programmable hand calculators to do the conversion. :D

Nope. The best us lowly Prius owners can do is switch to the metric speedometer (km/h). At least we will feel better because it will seem that we are going faster.:D

....then would this work?

Using ScanGage?

Check out http://www.pege.org/fuel/convert.htm (http://www.pege.org/fuel/convert.htm)

150mpg = 1.5681393333333333
155mpg = 1.5175541935483871
156.81393333333437mpg = 1.499999999 (see note below)
160mpg = 1.470130625
165mpg = 1.4255812121212121
170mpg = 1.3836523529411763
175mpg = 1.3441194285714286
180mpg = 1.3067827777777778
185mpg = 1.2714643243243244

Checked my lifetime FE in the metric system and it only goes to the tenth of a liter. This means to be 100% sure the FE exceeded 150mpg, fuel consumption needs to be under 1.5 liters per 100km. That computes to nearly 157mpg. At this point, I don't think Tom is going to say that's impossible. :D

Hi Chuck:

___The SG-I worked well for Dan and his Prius II. I wish we had his SuperMid in her though. The SG-I was borrowed from Eric Powers and was only partially calibrated as you are supposed to run through at least ¼ of a tank and calibrate the SG-I/II via gallons consumed at that fill. Since we were not going to run through a ¼ tank or more, what we did was use the Prius II’s FCD over ~ 4 miles and compare it to the SG-I’s FE readout. We did this a second time over 2 miles and the results of both tests showed the SG-I about 4% under reporting vs. the Prius II’s FCD. Dan went out with the SG-I attached and nailed down ~ 115.x mpg after the offset (111 on the SG-I) was taken into account.

___As Dan posted above, the Prius II does not have the ability to read in L/100 Km like the Insight does and thus 99.9 mpg’s is all she wrote. Want to bet that the Prius III has both an i and aFCD that goes to 150 or higher ;)

Hi Dan:

___I did not think this was an appropriate pic to post in the HF2006 thread as it was recorded on Sunday at my home when Chuck and I went out for a hypermiling clinic. We were traveling down a State route out and country road return with his Insight loaded up with the both of us and his gear for the return trip back to Dallas. We were mostly in the 140 - 150 mpg range as I blew a long FAS with a locked up 150.0 and left the ICE running (didn’t realize it as there was some traffic) but after the 10th mile or so, she was pegged right back into the stratosphere right through to my driveway for the RT segment. We were running very slow speeds into lights and stop signs as well as well waiting on the side of the road for traffic to clear on a long uphill overpass which helped later on. Thank goodness Chuck was in the car to see it with his own eyes as I thought 130 - 135 mpg would be the top just a week ago.

That time was more impressive (than Sat at HybridFest) since:

The blown FAS due to my Insight's mild dieseling problem (it's happened to me - need to cut it off for 2 seconds)
A/C - extra 100lbs
Me - extra 180lbs
luggage - extra 100lbs
Another tip: get the picture straight ahead and dim the dash in low lighting to avoid washedout pictures.

Looking at the table I created, it takes roughly a 10mpg (or more) improvement in FE to get the liters per 100km to drop 0.1. :(

Chuck

Liters per 100/km to MPG

1.4 is 156.81mpg or better
1.3 is 168.0149mpg or better
1.2 is 180.94mpg or better
1.1 is 196.017mpg or better
1.0 is 213.84mpg or better

Wayne has a 1.0 in him. It's just a matter of time......

I70 is like this for about 30 miles west of Denver (still like it to a lesser extent past that).

I'll be in that area around Aug 18, but lets get real - you could get infinity FE on this part of the interstate Denver-bound. :D

My father loves the drive home to NC from Fort Collins, CO, especially that long descent from the mountains. He gets around 35mpg in his Crown Vic while driving back. (Of course, he doesn't really want to talk about the mpg on the way up!) ;)

I found a business park in Grapeine, Texas and tried some P&G. While I wish the distance between stop signs was greater, I still for a moment got 1.2 l/100km over 5km or 3 miles. That would be about 181mpg or greater. :eek:

Since the distance was not that great and I'm new at this, I'm waiting to publish results. I might find a better place to do this.

What I was doing was coasting until I'm at almost zero, then gun the engine to about 30 and FAS. The gunning part seems to be the critical part. Also, I'm afraid to turn the ignition on less than five seconds after cutting it for fear of dieseling.

Funny thing aboutr ScanGage I is the readout is 9999mpg :D

The main thing is you can definitely document FE greater than 150mpg. :)

Hi Chuck:

___You don’t need to gun it and I highly recommend that you not do this. Your pack is brand new and unless you want to replace it on your own dime in < 10K miles, take it easy … Gently but forcefully. As you lose SoC, you want just enough forced charging at low SoC during the Pulse to give you a nice smooth start off the key rather then clutch starting it. With > 104K miles on her, gunning her is the key to ending up with a pile of junk. You know the RPM range and rate to get there so pull back on the aggressiveness and the numbers will come to you instead of sending your Insight to an early grave.

Hi Chuck:

___Thanks for the Recal tid-bit :( Back off the accelerator and you won’t have that problem. No more then 4 bars and that should extend the life of your pack indefinitely as something magical happens down in the lower reaches that you have not seen just yet. Please hold back as you are like a kid let loose in the candy store. She has some very interesting dynamics yet to be discovered and taking her to those areas should be done with extreme care first and foremost. That Insight pack is not to be toyed with and I really mean it!

This morning I got almost 79mpg - not all that close for a personal best on a work commute, but the battery pack was fully recharged (19-20 bars)

Since it was verified last night that documenting runs over 150mpg is possible, albeit on a short run, I'll give it a break. Would like to find a better route to do this - I ran a stop sign about five times. :o The traffic was very light.

The two things doing this that stick out is getting the acceleration right (that will take work), and how long to cut the engine off. It seemed there was a couple of times I cut the engine 3-4 seconds, and the engine restarted when the ignition was cut on. :(

It seemed there was a couple of times I cut the engine 3-4 seconds, and the engine restarted when the ignition was cut on. :(

That's been happening to me lately with the Accord, especially when the engine is still running open loop after a cold start. It seems to be a matter of being too eager to get the key back to IG-II on my part. Thing is, this was reeeeeaaaally bad when it happened and I didn't notice, didn't check the tach before keying on, and got that gut-churning sound of the starter gear grinding against the flywheel...practically made me sick. I was afraid I'd eaten something so I waited until I was on a good down-hill to key off and try re-starting just in case it didn't turn over again, leaving me with a clutch start to get home and start cursing. Fortunately no more choice words were needed! Noob mistake, lesson learned I hope.

I still think Wayne needs to take one of the carnival semi
tractors out instead... and if that doesn't do it, add a
trailerload of cinderblocks.
