Well, I'm here. I have seen Brad, Eric, and Bill very briefly. I went and got my stuff.

Here is the booty so far.

Oh, just wait for the gorgeous shots of hybrids in rows of 24, shining in the partly obstructed sun. Right now as I write this in the Hotel computer room (no WIFI for the laptop) I think so far I have enjoyed most meeting people I've only known through forums like this before. Can't wait for tomorrow to see that the hybrid car show goes off without a hitch and the MPG competition produces some exciting results.

Well, I just got finished doing the owner of the hour thing. I met a few people and chatted. Gave out a few cards. Hopefully we will see a few visitors in the next few days.

Terry hasn't stopped talking with people since we got to the parking lot around 8:30.

Here is one row of three in the parking lot. I counted over 75 hybrids in the car show area (then I lost count). There are more hybrids parked in the general parking lot. Eric definately got the 100 hybrids he wanted.

To see video taken of Hybridfest, go see the local news story done about HF 2006 today.
http://nbc15.madison.com/home/headlines/3405131.html -click on the title to view the video. I haven't seen it with audio yet, but even so, you can recognize some familar cars, and license plates.

Hi HyChi:

___Only 364 days until HF 2007 and with the turnout, I suspect we will see double the turnout of HF 2006’s event. Expect to be car pooling or maybe just caravanning for the next one as it was a great event for myself and if I might be so bold as to speak for Terry and Cathy from TN., Tom and his family from Chicago, Billy from Washington State, Hobbit from MA. and Chuck from TX all had a great time.

___A lot more pics yet to come ;)

wayne i bet it took you awhile just to travel 20 miles ;) and if your saying there's still a lot of room left for improvements, than boy its going to take YEARS to get to the level you are at.

Congrats on the personal record though, I'm sure your findings will be our savior to this gas guzzling addiction!

And boy I wish I was there, were there a lot of teenage kids interested in saving gas too?

Hi Phil:

___One of my favorite Hypermilers who just so happens to be just 17 years old nailed a 117.x mpg run on the course. His name is Justin Fons and is an absolutely great kid to meet and talk too. Both Justin and his father Bradlee have learned to push their Insight’s to levels most will never see. In fact, Justin was the first 16 year old to nail down a 100 + mpg segment in an Insight last year!

___After my run in the FE challenge, we talked and he has even more tools in his toolbox for next year. I suspect that we will all be asked to use Scan Gauges next year as there were 3 Prius’ that nailed 99.9 and Billy’s Insight above 150.0. I am almost positive Justin will be push his Insight to that level next year given he was in the 135 - 140 mpg range early on the course but lost it on a higher speed section. He knows how to handle that section now so keep an eye out for this young man. I have extremely high hopes to see him taking the lead in the not to distant future in fact. Just ask around. I was a bit concerned knowing Randall’s 108.x, Dan’s 115.x, Justin’s 117.x, and Mike Debrowski’s heavily modded EV capable Insight was sitting at 121.x before my run.

___In any case, Tom, Terry, Cathy, Hobbit, Chuck, Mark (Meggert), and the rest had a much better handle as to the ages of the public attending. I seemed to be rushing from one end of the grounds to the other doing the 2 relatively amateurish presentations, the FE challenge, messing around with calibrating a SG-I Eric had in his pile of HW for Prius II use, and speaking with individuals for 15 + minutes at a time when and where I could.

___Good Luck

Morning of HF 2006. Early morning in fact! You see Terry performing his own brand of magic on the HCH-II in the back and Billy who had already completed his work on the Insight in the foreground. 2 absolutely smashing looking hybrids! Until I see the rest of the pics from Chuck’s collection, this is the index thumbnail for the Events and Gatherings --> HF 2006 Photo Gallery.

http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/525/Resize_of_Tons_of_Prii_ready_for_HF_2006.jpg
So you think you have seen a lot of Prius’? There must have been 30 + on the lot itself and another 30 + in the various parking lots! This pic does not even close to showing the amount of Prius’ at HF 2006!

http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/525/Resize_of_More_Insight_s_then_I_have_seen_in_my_life.jpg

Another Mike D. like genius in fact!

Dan Kroushl’s Prius II FCD after his FE Challenge run. The Scan Gauge-I attached showed 115.x mpg.

Hobbit’s Prius II FCD after his FE Challenge run. IIRC, if he had another .25 - .3 miles, he could have maxxed it in EV!

___There are a lot more to come so stay tuned. Let me know if anyone would like me to upload a larger size of a particular pic as I cropped and resized all of the above for the dialup users … Hobbit, thank you for most of the pics above. That one of Randall, Kip, and the rest of us Insight’ers was especially pleasing as I had no idea you captured it.

Before I unpack....

All the CleanMPG members got about half of what they wanted to do - if that much, we were running at full throttle, then entire weekend, but it was very fun. :)
Wayne maxed at 150mpg on an Insight on the mpg challenge. Since the reading goes not higher than 150 - who knows what it really was? Idea, Wayne might get a reading higher than 150 by doing the next attempt metric, then converting to English.
About that picture: It was more impressive than the mpg challenge Sat at HybridFest. Reason is my car had about 400 pounds more weight:
I'm a passenger - 180lbs.
100 lbs of luggage.
100lbs A/C that was not in the Insight on Sat at HybridFest
Another challenge: my Insight has a mild "dieseling problem" - you must FAS for at least 2 seconds to kill the ICE. One time on my Insight, the engine did not stop on a FAS, bringing it down 10mpg.
Not only did I witness something more impressive than what Wayne did on Saturday, I learned quite a few things. (!)

Two days later, I'm at Russell Frost's house [priusownersgroup.com],
and we've had an amazing evening of discussion and rants and diner
food and picture-dumping. Tomorrow I finally get home. Got a
somewhat late start this morning from the motel that Mike D. and
I stayed at, because we ran into another couple with a Prius
and I spent a while giving them the whole techie rundown.
.
I'm not sure I learned anything I can totally put my finger on
at hybridfest, but I have evidently *so* nailed the sweet spot
of Prius highway mileage. Today's main tank ended at 66.4 mpg,
ALL interstates, doing somewhere around an average of 62 mph.
What's highway EPA on this thing, 52 or so? I think it's safe
to say that a Prius II is good for "64 at 64" with the proper
right foot and having good feedback available.
.
The prototype injector-duty meter is totally doing the right
thing, and a writeup of some sort will follow. I knew I took
those pix of the gauge set under various conditions on the way
out for a reason...

Hi All:

___The following is mainly for Phil as he wanted to see the FE Challenge course. There is another great pic where Chuck in his Insight was coming up on Randall in his who was coming up on what appeared to be a Prius II during the actual challenge but I do not have that one just yet :( IIRC, that particular Prius II driver took over 1.5 hours to complete the RT so he was really pushing his FE. We all completed it in less then an hour with 10 + minutes to spare. I will post that particular pic when I receive it.

___The pics show the first set of lights and overpass above the highway and rural country roads that made up ~ 15 miles of the course with little to no traffic and maybe a stop sign every 1.5 miles or so. In and around the fair grounds was the very dense traffic pattern with at least 4 stop lights within ~ 2 blocks and everybody got caught by at least 2 of them along with the fair traffic :(

___These are in order as they were taken although I do not have mile markers. The first was taken the day of the event. The rest were taken on Sunday morning. Chuck said the course was blocked by a team of local sheriff deputies at or around mile 10 because of a horse show/horse crossing early Sunday morning and he turned back rather then wait for the procession to clear.

Hi All:

___And a few more … These are UW – Madison Entries into the US Government - University Challenges Future Car - Future Truck - and Challenge X over the last few years. I do have to wonder why these automobiles are not on the road given where fuel prices are today regardless of the $3 - $5K hybrid upgrade for a $30K + vehicle?

Aluminum Cow
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/525/UW_Madison_-_Ford_Taurus_-_Future_Car_-_Aluminum_Cow.jpg
1994 Mercury Sable (I have no idea why it has a Ford Taurus front end?) using an all aluminum uni-body and shell (only 25 made), a 90 HP Ford sourced Turbo diesel (only 100 made), and a Solectra AC induction motor - Series hybrid electric vehicle. Acceleration was greater then the stock V6 - 140 HP Taurus/Sable twins of the time.

http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/525/UW_Madison_-_Ford_Explorer_-_Future_Truck_-_Moolander.jpg
2002 Ford Explorer using a 1.8 liter turbo-diesel and AC induction motor. Estimated combined FE is 39.4 mpg with California Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) emissions levels while running on B35. Full passenger/cargo capacity, appearance, and towing capacity were maintained yet received twice the FE!

2005 Chevrolet Equinox using a GM 1.9 L CIDI w/ a 6 speed manual transmission - Ballard induction motor/gearbox - in a Parallel Hybrid design all running on B20. ___Here is the final of those pics I have in my hands I thought might be of interest. I hope to see more as I believe Chuck has them on his camera about his trip into HF 2006 (St. Louis Arch, Sears Tower, on the road …)

I just e-mailed Wayne two EV1 videos. The better one has several interesting things:

It is driving by a red Insight. Take away the long back end of the EV1 and they would really look a lot alike
Nearly all of the EV1s were crushed - fewer of the survivors actually run. For the University of Wisconsin to get it to run, some or all of the engine was custom-made (read: NOT GM parts). Holding that thought, note the blue ad just under the EV1s right rear. Is this U of W's thank you for having the drive train disabled? :p
The orange cones were the start/stop point of the mpg challenge

Hi Hobbit:

___That would be great and let me know where you have them posted/uploaded. There is another Group Meet just north of Milwaukee in 3 weeks and the Prius II’s are always well represented. Usually far less technical oriented then you would go but there is always a few “must have” nugget’s of info in the rather large pile of technical details.

___When you are finally well rested up from the trip home, hit the highway speed - highway FE article in the Prius II because there are going to be a ton that want to read that one ;)

___Chuck, can you send me your pics form the Arch and Sears Tower? Also there was a great pic with you on the course coming up on Randall who was about to pass a Prius II IIRC. I think you should create a HF 2006 - Cross Country Journal for a new thread as you have some very good material! I will post the EV-1 vid here in a few minutes. Good eye as to what is just behind the EV-1’s passenger side door. A parting shot by a very intuitive (should we say disgruntled ;)) student up at the UW-Madison towards GM if I do say so myself!

Hi Chuck:

___I am not sure? I heard Linda tell everyone that her HCH-I received in the mid 70’s on the course with her husband or somebody else driving it? That may have been before HF2006 during the design of the course however? I do not know anything about the HCH-II’s results?

Oh man I should have re ran that course. I could have beat 68.1 easy. thats only 8.1 mpg more than my daily commute and from what I hear there are a whole lot less lights and traffic.

___Could you imagine Tarabell or Laurie out on the course driving their HCH-I/II respectively let alone Sledge, Meggert, and/or Terry in their own HCH-II’s? Steve (Hot Georgia) was there although car-less. He should have taken yours out as he owns the CVT as well … That would have filled the HCH-I/II ranks with some very respectable numbers really quick I bet!

___Eric, thanks for the split. I fixed the results table above …

Tom, it sure wasn't your mapreading skills that are to blame. I left out a whole step in the written instructions. I might never forgive myself for that!

The 73.8 in my HCHI CVT was achieved by Richard, the HFest VP. on a sunny warm April afternoon. I traded that car a week later on my Insight...

Linda, From what I hear it was a great course and like I said above, I'm kicking myself for not doing it again. You realy did a great job on designing the course from all accounts. I saw some pictures and droolled. Bits of it look like where wayne was able to take my car past 100mpg when we did testing.

I hope you had lots of fun putting people through it. Did you see lots of happy faces when they came back? I bet you did!

Hi All:

___Although most here do not know him, I know Dan and I would be delighted to have him visit for next years HF2007 event.

___Because there is behind the scenes discussion of a moderated Hybrid car roundtable w/ the public’s attendance and questions, Tom suggested I contact Yoshi (Super/Mid - FCD creator/builder and one of the most technically astute hybrid engineers in the world) out of Japan. He said he would be glad to come! As Eric and his team begin the draw down meetings for HF 2006, I am sure items of merit for next year will emerge and having Yoshi here for that round table could be a really exciting.

___Anyway, I wanted to post that Yoshi is definitely interested. Afterwards, he and his wife would like to drive out to see Niagara Fall’s. If it were not Dan or Hobbit, I am sure there are plenty of members that could help him with that request as they depart the Madison-Milwaukee-Chicago area post HF 2007. We can start some kind of fund raiser to help him with travel expenses but Tom and I would cover his accommodations while staying in the Chicago/Milwaukee/Madison area itself.

Hey guys and gals; it was good to meet everyone at HF06. This was the best part of the event. Lots of nice pics here also. Thanks to those contributors for doing such a good job of documenting. Waiting for that pic of Chuck passing me passing a Prius. Who was that hypermiling Prius driver? I gotta learn to slow down.

And for the amusement of others::bananajump:

I got a hypermiling ticket on my way thru KS. Got busted for, shall we say; right side ridge riding. Was tooling along at ~50/55, 3AM, letting semi’s pass, which 2 or 3 did, and then this passenger vehicle won’t pass me!!!
I hold to the right side going down hills so he can see to go around…….but he won’t do it. Couple of hills later he hits me with the lights. Seems I violated the solid white line on the right.
Asked me if I had anything to drink to night.
“No sir, just holding to the right so you can go around.”:p

Technically; failure to maintain single lane.
Written warning.

Welcome highwater!

Need to look and see if I got Terri making that move - it was so fast and unexpected.

Earlier this year, I travelled 141 miles at 98.9mpg. It effectively ended in Denton on I35 when had to get my speed over 40mph as a policeman was behind me on the verge of turning on stopping me.

Hi Highwater:

___Welcome and it was great to meet up with you at HF2006. I hope you can make it out for HF2007 as well because it should attract even more Insight’s!

___Steve, those TDI’ers can be an unusual sort with hybrid’s suck one minute and then a link to an online news story about Hybridfest 2006 the next? I think they are being turned to the “Bright side” by people like you and Eric ;) I do have to thank Eric for bringing on the TDIFest organizer early on to make HF2006 what it was. From what Eric has mentioned over the past few weeks, the TDI owning individual had a very good handle on the ways of TDIFest and passed on his expertise to Hybridfest without any of the backbiting the TDI vs. hybrid owners usually get into. Every bit helps and from my perspective HF2006 was a spectacular event other then being just 1 day.

Wayne you are 100% correct regarding the TDI'ers.
I also truly appreciate Eric posting over there as well.

There have been hybrid visitors there with an attitude or semi-attitude and I've found that kindness and alot of respect goes a long way in educating people with a grudge of some kind.
Eric and me seem to be breaking through.

I was truly suprised by a vetran TDI driver cheering me on regarding my last (poor 4 me) tank posted on their July MPG competition. I'd post a link to those kind words except my employers firewall blocks that site for some reason. :(

Hey, guys --

I posted my Hybridfest 2006 pictures over on flickr.com. Flickr's cool, if you don't know it -- you can use your Yahoo ID to sign in with. There's a monthly limit on bandwidth, but it's pretty high -- my 12 pics only used half -- and if you TAG your photos, others can search for them. If you decide to post, use the tags "hybridfest" and "hybridfest2006", and then you can simply search that tag and see everyone's at once (it does take a few hours for the tags to enter flickr's search engine). Might be a nice way to keep 'em all "centralized", eh?

Let me know what you think. THANKS! Looking forward to seeing more pics...

~Linda (Hybridfest_Linda over on Flickr)(who hates this heat wave, and hates what AC --even set to 88° -- does to her MPG when the heat index is 105°)
