View Full Version : A P&G Cycle Question
BudgetFitting 08-12-2008, 09:51 PM My previous tank was almost 57 mpg, and this was using 60 mph as my max target speed and 50 mph as my low target speed.
The tank that I just finished today was 54 mpg, using 60 mph as the high and 40 to 45 mph as the low. The front plate was taken off to try and cut down a marginal amount of wind resistance, and about 60 lbs was taken off the car as well.
I was really expecting 60+ mpg out of this tank, I worked my butt off this time around. I might have been shorted at the pump or had some gas siphoned from my tank because I don't understand when this tank was worse than before.
My question is this; was my FE worse on this tank because I coasted too far? I would not think so, since the longer the coast the better. I know Wayne said in another thread that the Fit's ideal P&G range is 55 mph and coast to ~44 mph, but coasting longer should not have hurt my FE, right?
Sorry if this is a dumb thread, I am just disappointed in this last tank and would like to find a remedy.
chilimac02 08-12-2008, 10:17 PM you're logic seems to be good to me. Did you maybe get some sort of ethanol blend at the pump? Were you at the same station you normally go to? Are you in need of an oil change?
Hi Budget:
___I hope you would not take my word for a Fit’s best P&G range as gospel as I have only sat in one, never driven one :( I have no idea what would be the best HS P&G range in it but I am sure as hard as you and the Fit owners are pushing here, it will be figured out in very very short order :)
___I hope you have seen my personal enthusiasm for all of the CleanMPG Fit owners achievements as of late. If you have not, let me tell you how proud I am of all of you as you take your Fit’s to a level very few had any idea it could be driven too!
___Good Luck

BudgetFitting 08-12-2008, 11:29 PM Thank you Wayne.
This site has helped me almost double my mpg, hats off to you and this site.
I will give this new tank a 55 mph to 40 mph P&G cycle and see how it fares. It is funny that I am disappointed in a 54 mpg tank:rolleyes:, it is still MUCH better than the epa rating:Banane04:.
I will interject though I do not have a SG.
That is great that you reached 60mpg with speeds of 60mph.
I was only able to hit 60mph a few times(litteraly) when achieving 60mpg. When I reached 61.5mpg I didn't go over 55mph. My glides down from 60mph ranged from 35-45mph. I would glide down to 45 when on interstate because the minimum speed is 45mph. On the local highways I would try not to exceed 50mph on the pulse and glide down to 40-35mph(this is the majority of my commute by like 2/3rds).
Note, that my commute has lots of slow rolling hills and some steep hills to where I can achieve up to .5-1.0 mile for a glide down the hill but then I typically have to climb up the next hill slowly increasing to my top max speed and some times I would just maintain 45mph and increase speed near the end of the climb.
I think Larry can give better info than I can since he seems to be the master of the 60+mpg on the FIT and has a SG.
BudgetFitting 08-13-2008, 10:54 AM Thank you for your input shan. On the 60 mpg tanks you had, did you shift at 2K?
For the 61.5mpg tank I tried to shift at 2200 rpms.
This last 60mpg tank I shifted at 1700-2000 rpms BUT this tank I did at least 10 in town short trips that were only like 5 miles. I typically do not take short trips like that. Also, I used A/C for a few of the short trips carting a few people around. I don't know and can't say that shifting at 1700-2000 rpms is better or worse since I don't have a SG.
lnmcmahan 08-13-2008, 11:20 AM My question is this; was my FE worse on this tank because I coasted too far? I would not think so, since the longer the coast the better. Where was your starting RPM for the next pulse? I have found that the sweet spot is between 1500 and 2000. If I go as low as 1200 - 1300 and try to hold 75% LOD on the pulse, the pulse is WAY too long and eats all the gain I made on the last glide. But still, none of that should put you below 1500, as taht is around 30 mph. Remember I P&G between 50 and 40. That is actually around 2500 - 2000. I am convinced I could be the best P&G results at 40 - 30 because that would prefectly fit the 2000 - 1500 range, but I am too chicken to try it on the freeway!
Regarding fill error on the tank: Do you top off, or do you stop when the pump shuts off? I do not completely top off, but with the nozzle in as far a possible, I pump slowly after the first shut off until it shuts off again. I can usually see the gas about 3 to 4 in inside the fill pipe. I may still get some error, but is is on the order of ouncer rather than a half gallon.
Back to the pulse. I have also found that if I have to slow down because of traffic to say 20 mph on the freeway, I am better up pulsing up a little bit at a time. For example. From 20 mph, I will pulse in 4th to 35, let it glide down to 30, pulse up in 5th to 45, let it glide down to 40, then resume my 50 - 40 P&G. This seems more economical than one long pulse to 50.
Let me know when you are going to be in NorCal (Bay area)

ksstathead 08-13-2008, 12:15 PM Larry,
I'll get the 1950RPM data you requested when I get a flat stretch at the right speed. This is my wife's car.
But your post here got me thinking I should use the paddle shifters to force shifts at lower RPMs. Will try that also.

I was stuffing my face when I just put 2 + 2 together.......you are on honda-tech.com and I am sahwn on H-T. Howdy. ;)

Yeah, that is me. You are actually the one who inspired me to start hypermiling, then you had mentioned this site. Thanks again for all your help Shan:woot:
Great! Glad I have actually helped someone. You are doing a great job. I was wondering about whether or not you achieved that 60mpg tank and now I see you have. H-T is pretty much dead for me. I use to lurk religiously there for the swap info and go fast info. Now, I just peep it every now and then to see what people are doing.

Same here, I don't think I have made a post there in awhile. I am a moderator over at turbod16.com, but still post a bunch over there since I really enjoy the online community. My days of drag racing are over.
My only new swap idea is a cx or hx engine into a gutted crx. I think with aero mods and making it as light as possible, 75+ mpg is doable. That engine got 55 mpg in the cx, so I figure in a 800lb lighter car with hypermiling it should be possible.

Hi Wayne,
I'm a tad lost now but trying to get my game plan on. I have a question for you. Do you have any experience with variance between different copies of the same car, all driven the same way?
I ask because I drove as near as I can tell the same as Larry, but managed around 8mpg less for the tank. I'm looking at a Fish-bone I made to try and sort this out.
Thanks Paul

I had another thought. What are you running in that thing. In CA we run what i will call E06.8, that is 6.8% corn squeezings. If you are running E10 that could account for part of it.
If you really want to find out the differences in driving style I cannot articulate in print, drag that thing over the Rockies and Sierras and we can do some comparative driving. :)
Larry
haha, I don't know if the FIT would make it over the mountains! :p
Larry -
I run the E10 crap in my car as well.

I remember in the beginning that I wonder if it has something to do with the gallons of gas you are saying you are putting in the tank. I think you may be off the amount of gallons some how.
