RUSSIA has dramatically widened its attacks on Georgia, ignoring appeals for a ceasefire and strongly worded warnings from the US.

Russian tanks and troops moved through the separatist enclave of South Ossetia and bombed the city of Gori in central Georgia, in Russia's first ground assault on a Georgian city. And early today Melbourne time, Russian forces carried out military operations around the west Georgian city of Senaki to prevent Georgian troops from regrouping there, according to the Russian defence ministry.

It's a tough situation which I'm sure not many people understand along with the russian gov't calling to nato for a meeting. There has got to be a good reason behind this...oh and georgia is right next to iraq and that area latching onto Turkey, so draw your conclusions very carefully..

We watch russian TV by satelite, and are a bit surprised about the complete lack of coverage from the ossetian side of the story. According to russian news, hundreds or even thousands of ossetian's were killed by the first georgian offensive that started the whole thing. No wonder the russians are mad if that is the case.

From my understanding US, UK, France are all against Russia on this one. Seems no one can verify Russia's claims....doesn't mean it didn't happen, just few/no outsiders there to verify.

This could explode into something big, or just fizzle out and become the stuff of academic review. I'm hoping for the 2nd.

With Bush at the helm, it will be the 1st.
