coming into work this morning, Didnt hit that dreaded light at the bottom but had a couple slowdowns and such. I swear these lights changed randomly.
40.8mpg 9.3mi
not so bad considering I had to drop my fiance off this morning and go to a route that is stoplight ridden.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-11-2008, 06:20 AM I REALLY wish the city would clean up that gravel. :(
52F, no wind, clear:
110.9mpg for 22.5mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 119.3mpg over 385.4mi.
Looks like I'll need around 132mpg on the way home to bring this back up. :(
TracyJean 08-11-2008, 07:02 AM :woot: At 5:30 AM - 86F (warmest it's been in the morning, although it's only supposed to get up to 90 today), 65% humidity (it's supposed to rain later today), variable winds 6 MPH. I put a grill block on the lower grill yesterday and it PAID OFF big time. 40 MPG, 3.7 miles to work this morning. Friday, my MPG was 36.7 when it was 5 degrees cooler. Looks like I'm on pace for my first 40+ tank.
Curious to see what it will be this afternoon, when the roads will likely be wet. This being summer in Texas, I haven't had an opportunity to see numbers in the rain since I started hypermiling.
Chuck 08-11-2008, 07:30 AM 93.7mpg this morning - rain.
PaleMelanesian 08-11-2008, 07:47 AM I avoided the rain, but it was HUMID - fog and everything dripping. 78 degrees.
69.9 mpg / 13.2 miles. Another 5 feet would have given me my 70. :(
63.0 / 68 miles tank so far, still above full.
shifty35 08-11-2008, 09:24 AM I avoided the rain, but it was HUMID - fog and everything dripping. 78 degrees.
69.9 mpg / 13.2 miles. Another 5 feet would have given me my 70. :(
63.0 / 68 miles tank so far, still above full.
That's when you roll to the next parking space!
I had a bunch of throw-aways this morning due to unforseeable traffic slowdowns. 94.9 mpg / 17.2 mi on a day that would have easily been in the 100's, oh well.
Tank is at 86.7 mpg / 630ish miles.
Holy cow, KiloTanks are a long proposition when driving < 50 mi a day...
This is my 3rd week on this tank!
PaleMelanesian 08-11-2008, 09:32 AM I chose to keep my normal spot - it's shaded in the afternoon. The other choices are all sunny. If you live in TX and don't use AC... ;)
JusBringIt 08-11-2008, 09:32 AM Holy cow, KiloTanks are a long proposition when driving < 50 mi a day...
This is my 3rd week on this tank
I've been on this tank 4 weeks now (since 7/14) 3 more days for it to be a month on one tank of gas. I still have over 150 miles left I'm guessing and I do <25 miles/day. That's just shy of another week on this tank of gas :).
SlowHands 08-11-2008, 09:40 AM Had to do some running around this morning... into work was a nice 45.9, then the errands...part of the run was as low as 34.8, but so far for the day I'm at 42.6 for 48 miles, tank is up to 39.7 at 499 miles...
PaleMelanesian 08-11-2008, 09:49 AM Ken - do I hear 40 calling in the distance?
FrJohn 08-11-2008, 09:54 AM Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooood morning, all y'all ...
Another abysmal week-end ... 50.2 mpg for 142.3 miles. All those short trips really do ruin the mileage.
I'm on my quest for a fifth 60+ day, so that I can move the bar a bit, and continue learning.
Y'all have a great one, and be careful out there ... crazies abound.
SlowHands 08-11-2008, 11:34 AM Yes, Andrew, I'm hoping to pull that 40 mpg tank... but it might get squished today with having to do some 'truck work'. Friday morning my older son had a car accident, he braked and dodged the van in front of him that had just slammed into a COP CAR, he hit a very high median curb and crushed his left front wheel, blew the tire to shreds, and bent the lower control arm, probably a tie rod end, and maybe a bit more?? No body damage, no person damage (he was wearing seatbelt). Didn't hit the van or the cop... but yet the cop gave MY SON THE TICKET!! for following too close???!!
Anyway, I am probably going to have to go get my neighbor's tow dolly (about 22 miles away) take it to the impound yard, tow the car about 2 miles, and then take the dolly back out to the neighbors place. I know that the 2 miles or so is going to be dismal on FE.
JusBringIt 08-11-2008, 11:38 AM I can see why he gave your son the ticket, however, did the other driver also get that same ticket along with plenty more?
question though, does your son hypermile?
PaleMelanesian 08-11-2008, 11:49 AM Was that your son Sean? Good thinking and quick reactions on his part, but unfortunate results still. :( Good luck.
SlowHands 08-11-2008, 12:56 PM No, it was son Andy, the oldest. He is normally 'ecodriving' ... never was a speeder, has a clean record, and is pretty defensive driver. I don't know what the other driver got, but Andy was pretty sure the guy had no insurance, so that's going to make for some police fun...
JusBringIt 08-11-2008, 02:14 PM If he was following too close...I'm sure it would've been a pile-up. Sometimes you have to wonder what goes through the minds of some of our citizens nowadays...have you ever asked the question..
What the HELL were they thinking??
TracyJean 08-11-2008, 02:48 PM On the way home from work - 90F, 52% humidity, no wet pavement (it rained for all of about 10 minutes at 10 this morning), variable winds of 6 MPH, 3.3 mile trip. Managed to eek out 37 MPG which is way better than my normal average on the drive home since winds in Texas typically comes from the south during the summer and I'm driving right into them on the way home.
Then I had to go to the orthodontist - 65% humidity, light rain, WSW winds at 6 MPH, same temp. 2 mile trip - 33.6 MPG there and 34.3 MPG on the way home. Best numbers I've seen for such a short trip since I started doing this.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-11-2008, 04:08 PM Ken, I hope that vehicle isn't too bad to repair. :( I'm very glad Andy is okay!!
Nice work, Tracy!
I had a pretty good run home but there were some bad moments, too (like the tailgating box truck when I had to start from a stop at the bottom of a steep hill. :(). I didn't have quite enough by the time I was passing the house so I took a loop to get it up. :p
My afternoon commutes seem to be doing pretty well -- it's the mornings that are killing me. I picked up some traffic behind me this morning and figured since the gravel is still high on the shoulders I should pull off on the alternate. It hurt me worse going that way than dealing with the traffic, I believe. Lesson learned. :(
80F, 11mph tailwind from the SSE, partly cloudy:
131.1mpg for 22.5mi (Work to home)
The tank remains at 119.8mpg over 408.0mi.
Day Total: 120.0mpg over 45.1mi
3 commuting days @ 120+mpg
It's looking like I may be rained out for the rest of the week. 'Lantrific will be making an appearance. ;)
diamondlarry 08-11-2008, 05:56 PM A decent day today despite the autumn-like temps this morning. I started out at 55F this morning with light winds. This afternoon I had ~75F with winds from the NW@ ~5mph with gust to 15mph.
1. 95.4-11.0(home to work)
2. 93.2-12.4(work to home-alternate route with less traffic)
Average for today was 94.2(day 36@ 80+mpg day 16@ 90+ mpg) and the tank is at 100 after 79.7 miles.
lamebums 08-11-2008, 06:00 PM I passed by a wreck on the side of the road just the other day. Five cars all in fender-benders. My best guess is they were NASCAR'ing it up and the first guy for one reason or another got on the brakes.
62.2 - 9.4 (home to NKU--I had 67 before I lost it in the parking lots)
68.1 - 13.2 (NKU to home)
JusBringIt 08-11-2008, 06:01 PM Terrible weather today :(. Rain and my car didnt warm up for quite a while. I did a lot better that rain actually killed me.
38.2 9.2mi work to home.
MT bucket 08-11-2008, 07:22 PM Well, now that I can see how well (or how bad) I am doing every day with the sgI think I will let the old van thread die and start posting on these. :)
I had kind of a slow day today, 8 pickup and delivieries (16 stops) at 160 miles.
No real long highway runs, a few pretty good ones though. lots of city slogging in the morning. lots of red lights throughout the day makin' things tough. No heavy cargo loads.
great weather to be out, not to hot or cold. possible rain tomorrow, we need it!
ended the day with 28.8 mpg. started pretty bad, but got up into the lower 29s for a while, but rush hour and to many missed lights brought me down in the end.
Here is some fun...
42 mpg in my van? absurd? well here it is on my CTM (current trip mileage) gauge!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v630/Cyberfish8/mt%20pilgrims%20pics/42mpg.jpg
Unfortunately a few red lights around the bend brought me back to reality! :p
RichXKU 08-11-2008, 07:40 PM Now celebrating my 5th tank over 50 MPG in the Fit, and fourth 500+ mi tank.
Current fillup: 527.6mi @ 50.03 MPG.
Some AC use and 2 severe weather trips requiring lights, wipers and fan brought this one down.
I crammed 10.544 gallons in there. If I had filled to the same level as the last tank, it probably would have been closer to 53 MPG.
moneysaver 08-11-2008, 09:00 PM Today turned out better than yesterday. Most importantly, less than usual traffic and NO bottle neck effect by the construction zone. :Banane05: Going to work was 35.2 MPG and 38.7 MPG coming from work. This was just DWB, DWL, and Nice-on coasting, I did not do Fas because my mom was with me. She would completely freak out if she knew that i occasionally turn off the engine while doing 55mph. Had to fill up the tank and it was 'bout 31.33mpg. Lower than expected.
The SG2 showed 33.1 MPG for the tank but I used .7 gallons of gas more than shown by scan guage.
Chuck 08-12-2008, 06:14 AM 96.1mpg last night - 99.8mpg this morning.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-12-2008, 06:21 AM Plenty of rain this morning so I drove 'Lantrific.
I need to get her on the charger. I'm starting to think the SG really is pulling the voltage down somehow, but then again I never let it sit as long as I do now when I didn't have the Insight.
65F, 5mph headwind from the SE, rainy:
60.8mpg for 22.1mi (Home to work)
This brings the tank down to 66.1mpg over 113.7mi with 14.3g left and the guess gauge still showing the needle way above the F mark.
SlowHands 08-12-2008, 06:33 AM Lots of stupidly heavy traffic yesterday over to the tow lot and out to my friend's farm. Had some trouble torching off the old ball. Had A LOT more trouble with the wiring harnesses, on both the truck and tow dolly. Enough that at 10:30PM we gave up fighting with flashlights testers crimpers etc. Will pick up the battle maybe Wednesday night. Home from his farm I managed a 42.3, and weirdly a 42.3 into work this morning... but the tank is down to 39.2 at 585. But nice the SG lists 202 miles left...hmmmm... IF I continue to do well, perhaps I might get to see an 800 mile tank???!!
JusBringIt 08-12-2008, 06:42 AM Lotta short trips yesterday along with heavy rains causing flood in some areas
29.7 2.0mi home to pickup my sister then to wal mart
48.5 -1.1mi wal mart to home.
40.6 into work this morning. Two of the worse lights today, the one at the bottom of the hill and another one at the peak of my pulse. I watched the light turn from red to green then back to red in two blinks! This morning could've been 42/43. My pulse would not have been so bad if I could get my car into 4th gear at 30mph :(. I would be way over 45mpg on my trips to and from work. The tank sits at 445 when the LFL came on. Still a tick over the last line on the bottom. I'll still milk it for at least 550 then probably get myself a gallon and go for the 600.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-12-2008, 07:02 AM Go, Ken! 800 is a lovely number, eh? :D
Ricardo, keep pushing! My last tank in the Insight started out with nearly 400mi at 89mpg. Look how that turned out. ;)
PaleMelanesian 08-12-2008, 07:53 AM 57.2 home last night - a stop on the way, and then it rained the rest of the way home. :(
66.5 this morning - light drizzly rain and wet roads
Tank's at 62.5 / 95 miles and the needle is down (:p) to full.
TracyJean 08-12-2008, 07:55 AM Winds coming out of the north this morning, so that brought down my mileage a little bit on the way to work. 3.6 miles, 73F, 88% humidity, winds NNW 4MPH - 38.9MPG.
Ophbalance 08-12-2008, 09:58 AM I got the Elantra underway for the first time in two weeks. She was a grumpy one this morning... I didn't think it was going to make it out of the driveway. The brakes had glazed up and weren't in a mind to let go ;). However, my traffic nerve got built up and I just let it ride for the last 8 miles or so in. I got a 42 MPG over 49.1 this morning. Yay.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-12-2008, 03:52 PM I didn't quite redeem myself this afternoon (the tank is still 2/10ths lower than when I started this morning), but I was close anyway. :)
75F, 7mph tail/crosswind from the S, overcast:
71.1mpg over 22.0mi (Work to home)
This brings the tank to 66.9mpg over 135.7mi with 14g remaining.
Day Total: 65.9mpg over 44.1mi
I peeked and the SG said I have a range of 936mi left on this tank. ;)
Of course the SG thinks I have a 16g tank and I put in 17g last time without running her dry. :D
lamebums 08-12-2008, 03:57 PM 52.2 to the golf course in heavy traffic
49.7 to Best Buy
69.0 to Wal-Mart
34.9 coming back home.
I swear I hit every single red light in all of Northern Kentucky today. I couldn't time worth a damn.
Hummer sighting at Best Buy:

"Environment".
JusBringIt 08-12-2008, 04:30 PM 37.4 6.7mi coming to my fiance's from work today. Hopefully I can replicate the 57 I had the other night, that should bring the tank up quite a bit.
PaleMelanesian 08-12-2008, 04:38 PM I peeked and the SG said I have a range of 936mi left on this tank. ;)
Of course the SG thinks I have a 16g tank and I put in 17g last time without running her dry. :D
If I had 16 gallons... ;)
diamondlarry 08-12-2008, 05:10 PM Auston, the "environment" plate really seems out of place when you figure in how much the FSP used to get all the way from IN.
Sean, good work as usual. I think my son mentioned that he was at ~150 miles and his gauge was still above the "F" mark.
Another average day in IN. The temp was 56F this morning and winds were from the NW@ ~5mph. This afternoon, I had 73F and winds were still from the NW and were at 5-10mph.
1. 98.9-11.0(home to work)
2. 95.0-12.4(work to home)
Average for today was 96.8(day 37@ 80+mpg and day 17@ 90+mpg) and the tank is at 99.2 after 103.1 miles. The "gas" X-gauge is still showing 100% with occasional dips to 97.5%.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-12-2008, 06:11 PM If I had 16 gallons... ;)
I look at Wayne's 19g fills in the Accord and think the same thing about 19g! :p
MT bucket 08-12-2008, 06:58 PM I kind of had a tought day as far as FE goes. started out in the rain
and got lots of short runs dtn mpls and st paul, I was in the low to mid 20s most of the day.
I finally was able to get somewhat away from town with a drop in brooklyn park, and then off to rogers for a run back to Mpls, then another, a direct service $$ :)
During that run I got some highway driving and HS P&G I was able to ramp up to some fairly decent number, around 28.8 mpg. lost quite a bit though on the last stops , and went grociery shopping, missed too many lights
Mistimed them too, some I thought would be red for a while so I fas, then they turn right away, or I would think they are going to turn quickly, so I stay idleing, only to relise I should be shutoff, but now its to late grrrrrr
Oh well, just need to be thankful I had a safe and good time on the roads today :)
10 deliveries, 169 miles, 28.3 mpg
MT
Ophbalance 08-12-2008, 09:05 PM I've never been so happy to see the buses run again. They're limited to 45 MPH on I40 (65 PSL). I got 43.4 over 49.1 miles home. I had to run out to the store tonight to gas up the lawn tractor, and hit 36.4 over 6.7 miles there and 40.1 on the way back. Woot! I would have had it up to 42 or so but I had traffic on my butt on the way home.
lamebums 08-13-2008, 02:07 AM Auston, the "environment" plate really seems out of place when you figure in how much the FSP used to get all the way from IN.
You know, the more I think about it I can't even fathom this guy's gas bill. If he came from Lawrenceburg or Aurora (which is optimistic) then that's easily 15 miles on I-275 and then 5 more on 75, plus city traffic. At 10 MPG that's 5 gallons easily, or $20 in gas. Probably to spend $10 at the Best Buy.
If the poor bastard came from St. Leon then he probably burned $40 in gas round-trip.
SlowHands 08-13-2008, 02:29 AM Ah yes, there are some days where good stuff happens, sometimes followed by gooder stuff..
Last night going to a group meeting, I set a new best for that trip: highest previous mpg for that trip I believe was 37.0 for 13.5 miles, now I punched through and pulled a 41.0, beating the previous best by 10%:D This trip is taken in the heart of heavy traffic, part of it on I-88 and you've all seen pictures of that at 6:15-6:30PM... The way back to the office I have been able to squeek a 40.x, last night I slipped in a 41.9 :D Going home from work in surprisingly medium traffic I was able to pull a satisfactory 45.9 (it was a 46.3 but I had to move the truck to let someone off the driveway darn it...)
Well after a nap and a shower, the trip to work this morning was... well... more gooder than I would have expected (I know its a made up word ;) ) I took the slightly longer (.1 miles) route through the side streets, I knew something had potential when I hit 88.0 at the first stop sign, 56.x at the second, 56.x at the third, 58.x at the fourth. There's a long gradual uphill to the light at Devon and Tonne, and I was still above 50mpg  Yup, yup, yup this was looking okey-dokey. OK, I'll cut to the chase: NEW PR beating the previous best of 52.0 for 11.6 miles, an incredible 57.6 mpg for 11.6 miles:woot::Banane27::woot:
This ties the all time best mpg for TorqueNada which was 57.6 for 16.6 miles at the WFEC.:D And it brought the tank up to 39.6 for 636 miles, SG showing 162 miles to go... 16 gallons gone, 4 gallons to go... Ah yes some days are really good!!
Chuck 08-13-2008, 06:14 AM 103.1mpg this morning.
Strangly after a rain last night, we have an orange ozone alert day.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-13-2008, 06:17 AM Awesome work, Ken!! :D :woot:
Another hundred+... nice one, Chuck!
I got off to a good start this morning, though it was in thick fog. I hit my halfway point at just under what I had been last week and figured I had "it" back but traffic lights put the kabosh on me. :p
54F, no wind, foggy:
114.6mpg for 22.2mi (Home to work)
The tank sits at 119.6mpg over 430.2mi.
I'll need a 126mpg trip on the way home...
JusBringIt 08-13-2008, 06:44 AM ahh...I tried disabling my tps so that it would have a really low setting, but instead it had a really high setting :( didnt really help much in the mileage department.
43.7 - 6.1mi fiance's to work.
My car didnt warm up till I was almost at work. That deprives me of 4th gear/overdrive. Hopefully I can make that up on my way home with a 45+....I might not make the 600mi tank, but we'll see, I'm getting that one gal.
Skwyre7 08-13-2008, 06:45 AM 45.4 MPG Monday morning
45.4 MPG Tuesday morning
44.9 MPG this morning (with one passenger). The tank is around 45.1-2 MPG over 300+ miles. The gas gauge is a needle's width under the half tank mark. :D
PaleMelanesian 08-13-2008, 07:39 AM Nice work, Ken! :woot:
I got 33.5 mpg this morning, and I'm happy about it. :D ;)
... in the Odyssey. 3.5 V6 auto, epa 21 combined.
Bruce 08-13-2008, 08:15 AM Rusty brakes and scarified pavement this morning. 45.7 MPG for 15.4 miles at 60°F, no precip or wind. Tank's at 46.2 MPG for 260 miles, 7.4 gallons remaining from my last fill on June 6.
MT bucket 08-13-2008, 08:26 AM Nice work, Ken! :woot:
I got 33.5 mpg this morning, and I'm happy about it. :D ;)
... in the Odyssey. 3.5 V6 auto, epa 21 combined.
Nice! that gives me something to shoot for in the D-van :)
I have got close to 32 but it was all highway...
PaleMelanesian 08-13-2008, 01:07 PM Running around downtown at lunch in the Ody.
12.5 mpg / 0.4 miles
17.2 / 1.5
21.8 / 0.9
21.4 / 0.6
15.8 / 0.9
How do you spell FSP? O-D-Y-S-S-E-Y, that's how!
It was in a minor parking lot collision the other day, and I'm getting estimates for the repair work. A dented bumper, some scraping, and a cracked tail light. $1000-$1200 to repair!:mad:
JusBringIt 08-13-2008, 01:09 PM you had me there with the 33.5mpg and I'm happy. I have my screen minimied for work related reasons. I scrolled down to the rest :o. anyway excellent tho!
JusBringIt 08-13-2008, 03:53 PM good commute today home from work. Actually a PR on this commute but could have been better :)
42.3 over 9.2mi
Right Lane Cruiser 08-13-2008, 04:18 PM I hope you can get the work done more cheaply than that, Andrew! :(
Nice work, Ricardo!
I had a very nice drive home. :) It started out not as well as I had hoped due to wet roads, but I drove out of that and managed to work the traffic in a relaxed manner. It brought my tank average back up! :D
75F, 5mph crosswind from the WSW, overcast:
135.3mpg for 21.9mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 120.3mpg over 452.2mi with all 20 bars still showing on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 124.0mpg over 44.2mi
Day 4 @ 120+mpg average. ;)
JusBringIt 08-13-2008, 04:43 PM Sean you are a LEGEND! both you and Andrew show the epa where to put it. Hopefully I can be there where you guys are one day.
diamondlarry 08-13-2008, 05:38 PM Another good day. Temps in the low 60'sF this morning and low 70'sF this afternoon. Winds were from the NW@ ~5mph all day.
1. 100-11.1(home to work-this ties my PR for this trip:))
2. 90.4-11.0(work to home)
Average for today was 95.0(day 38@ 80+mpg and day 18@ 90+mpg) and the tank is at 98.1 after 125.5 miles with the "gas" X-gauge at 100%.
SlowHands 08-14-2008, 03:11 AM Larry - 38 days at 80+ mpg? Good grief man, have you thrown away your physics book? ;)
Yesterday's drive home was nothing spectacular, it was a pleasant 43.6. The warm fuzzy feeling from yesterday's new PR of 57.6 mpg for 11.6 miles over the previous 52 mpg was still making me grin like Sylvester after swallowing that canary Tweety... and then I read about Billy and his pulling a 1000 mile tank in his Ranger!! Great Googly Moogly!! So this morning, armed with a 4 hour nap, a warm fuzzy glow, and inspiration from Billy's accomplishment, I decided to kick it up another notch... hehe I did it...:woot:
:D:eek:NEW PR: 59.2 mpg for 11.6 miles! :eek::D
This beats the record of 2 days ago by over 13%!! Holy cow Batman! Will the fabric of the universe start to unravel?
And to think just over a year ago I thought it was a big deal to get 30 mpg for my commute, because my usual was about 20-22 mpg. What a difference the people at this site have made!
I saw 60.4 mpg twice during the last 3 miles... if it wouldn't have been for a guy who backed out of his driveway right in front of my while just starting a glide and having to come to a complete stop, I might have punched out a 60... well tomorrow's another day
Tank is at 40.0 mpg for 714 miles...I have to go downtown this morning, and I have a gas can just in case...SG shows 84 miles to go.. came back from downtown 41.1 there, 43.1 back. Tank at 40.0 at 752 miles, SG shows 48 to go...
Chuck 08-14-2008, 06:21 AM 101.7 last night - 102.9mpg this morning.
JusBringIt 08-14-2008, 06:33 AM So this morning was a little different, I found out I can get over 42mpg both ways:woot:

I might not be able to get a 600mi tank this time but definitely 550. Tanks sits at 477mi just under the last line so that's about 12.xx - 13.xx gallons fill of a 15.9 gal tank. I'll have to check the garage to see if I have a gas can in the garage with some gas. There were a lot of variables in this tank so it might not be 40, but we'll see.
42.4mpg - 8.8mi into work this morning. ( A PR for this route ), The last PR was 42.3, It would've been 42.5 except there was a car that blocked me from getting to the other side of the parking lot and killed my glide, rolled backwards right into a spot tho. :)
jfbrown42 08-14-2008, 07:04 AM A good drive in today. Moderate traffic over 59 miles highway. 35.1mpg. I got my best ever instant MPG reading on my scan gauge coasting down a hill in neutral with my engine on: 204mpg. :)
Right Lane Cruiser 08-14-2008, 07:11 AM Wow, Ken!! You're really turning up the heat!! :woot:
I got off to a late start and it is supposed to wet this afternoon so I drove 'Lantrific. Traffic was a lot worse but...
58F, no wind, clear:
68.1mpg for 22.2mi (Home to work)
This brings the tank back up to 67.1mpg over 158.0mi with 13.6g left.
Not a bad start to the day. ;)
PaleMelanesian 08-14-2008, 08:03 AM 68.6 this morning, back in the Civic.
I topped off the tank this morning. 118 miles, 1.86 gal = 63.44 mpg. (SG said 63.75. Less than 1/2% error)
There's going to be a lot of vehicle switching, with the van going in to the shop. I'll be driving Proto-Torquenada (87 Mazda B2000), and my wife will be in the Civic.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-14-2008, 09:04 AM You beat me, Andrew! :p
I hope that repair bill is lower than expected. :(
Ophbalance 08-14-2008, 09:16 AM 41.2 over 49.1 miles in this morning. That warmup hit in the morning is a killer.
PaleMelanesian 08-14-2008, 09:51 AM Matthew - congratulations! (I think?)
--------------------------
The body shop doesn't have an opening for a week and a half, so I'm clear until then. :)
The other guy (at fault) is paying for the repairs.
The van was parked in the Target lot. He was driving through the lot. Another driver "was driving like a maniac" through the same lot. He swerved to avoid that driver, cut the corner too close, and clipped the back corner of our van.
Everyone, be careful out there. Parking lots are dangerous!
JusBringIt 08-14-2008, 10:13 AM Everyone, be careful out there. Parking lots are dangerous!
Reminds me of a conversation wayne was having with a fellow about what was more dangerous, someone going 10 below the speed limit on a highway, or a maniac in a parking lot, so far
maniac in a parking lot -1
Andrew 10 below limit +1 :)

Chuck 08-14-2008, 10:21 AM :D:eek:NEW PR: 59.2 mpg for 11.6 miles! :eek::D
Congratulations!
I wish the pickups around here were thinking like you...they are never the ones giving me heck on morning commutes. ;)
Ophbalance 08-14-2008, 10:22 AM Andrew> I laughed... really, really hard when she told me yesterday ;). Serves us right for wanting another child. But then, I'm not really the one that has to feed them. Or get them around during the day.
Skwyre7 08-14-2008, 10:32 AM Nothing to report today. It wasn't my turn to drive the carpool, and I got picked up. I don't have to pick up my son from the baby sitter this afternoon, so no gas will be used by me today! (At least not in the Corolla. ;))
Right Lane Cruiser 08-14-2008, 03:49 PM That was somewhat congested. :p

He's not getting my business again if he's going to make me drive places on my gas and my time and then say he's too busy for a paying customer.)
45.4 - 5.4 (returning home).
I got to fill up the Buick today. $53.00, 13.6xx gallons, and only like 220 miles. You do the math on a car rated 19/29
I was up at Highland Motors today and saw this:

The bright side though is that's their business, taking salvages and getting them fixed and then re-selling them. So at least two lucky new owners will have Prius-I's within a month :)
diamondlarry 08-14-2008, 05:45 PM Larry - 38 days at 80+ mpg?
:D:eek:NEW PR: 59.2 mpg for 11.6 miles! :eek::D

Ken, we keep hearing about the hole in the ozone layer but, if you keep that up, we will soon be hearing about a hole in the space/time continuum.:D Way to go!:woot: As for physics books, I never took that.:p Maybe I should write my own physics book. Hmm.;) Also, my record for 80+ days is 46.
Another great day of physics book-burning in northern IN today.:D I started out with 61F and winds were from a northernly direction@ ~5mph all day. This afternoon the temp was 80F.
1. 98.5-11.0(home to work)
2. 97.8-11.0(work to home)
Average for today was 98.1mpg(day 39@ 80+mpg and day 19@ 90+mpg) and the tank is at 97.7 after 147.6 miles and the "gas" X-gauge is at 100%.
just did a little playing with some numbers. If i were to fill up right now I would push my LMPG up to 42.0 yay! I don't really need gas (still have about 1/2 tank), but might get some just because
MT bucket 08-14-2008, 07:35 PM Tough day for the D-van today. On-Time had computer issues and I think that caused me to get lots of short little runs with lots of stopping and city putzin' really put the hurt on my FE!
Spent a good part of the day in the 26 mpgs, would get up into the 27s but then get slapped back down again! finally towards the end I got a couple longer runs up north for some highway miles. Unfortunately everywhere I went there was traffic waves, so no real gainers going up. finally on the last run i had wide open road and worked really hard and got a great run, and just barely got to 28 :)

shifty35 08-14-2008, 08:37 PM Had a decently good run today.
97.0 mpg / 17.2 mi home --> work
8x.x mpg / 4 mi work -> buy drinks ;)
91.4 mpg / 17.2 mi work --> home
Tank is at 87.4 mpg / 74x.x mi. 3/4 of the way done with a KiloTank...
Oh, I got my new tires mounted on the Prius last night. Done in Murfreesboro, TN... and I couldn't resist filling it up when I saw gas for...
$3.36 a gallon! 23 cents cheaper per gallon than in town.
The first 1/2 tank on in the Prius was ~ 400 miles at 55 mpg. Not bad considering my wife did most of that with the A/C on, I'm darn proud!
SlowHands 08-15-2008, 03:00 AM 45.3 for going home last night. Coming into work this morning I managed to pull an extremely nice 57.1 mpg :D I sure love the 2:00am traffic!! There are virtually no other cars other than one or police cruisers watching for speeders and drunks. This gives me the chance to go deeper into a glide than I ever can with any traffic coming up behind me, and I can keep my pulses to a lower max than I would in traffic. Probably 7 of the 11.5 miles is 2 lane road with no passing zones. I do my best to not be an impediment to traffic, but I won't go over the PSL (well there's a couple spots where about 3-5 over will get me over a slight hill and have a longer glide...)
Tank is UP to 40.3 at 781 miles. I have to drive my son to work about noontime, and because of the distance to his job I might have to fill just shy of 800 miles. Or put more gas in the gas can so that if I run out I can get back to my 'normal' gas station. Oh the decisions I have to make
Chuck 08-15-2008, 06:16 AM 100.5mpg last night.
It rained the entire trip to work this morning - road had virtually an inch of water all the way. Little lean burn and using MIMA al la Calpod to cancel Assist - that much resistance from the downpour. The result: a potential 100mpg run downgraded to 58.0mpg
Right Lane Cruiser 08-15-2008, 06:20 AM Nice work, Ken! :woot:
That's a bummer, Chuck. :( :(
I started out well today but made the mistake of trusting a light less than a mile from work. At the base of a hill. I was on track for 116+ but... :p
55F, 1mph crosswind from the NNE, clear:
113.9mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work)

I'll need a 127mpg trip home to keep the average up.
Skwyre7 08-15-2008, 07:03 AM My other friend drove for our carpool this morning. Normally I drive the 1.2 miles over to his house and use 0.04 gallons of gas. This morning, I decided to walk. It took me about 20 minutes, but I burned calories and no gas. :D

Right Lane Cruiser 08-15-2008, 08:48 AM Ricardo, those high 50's look pretty good on you!

Last filled on 7/23/08. I'm going to forget it runs on gas eventually. :)
TracyJean 08-15-2008, 09:05 AM Yikes. What a difference winds out of the north (at 16) and heavy rain (which of course opened up just as I was walking out the door of my apartment) makes....I was lucky to pull 28 MPG over the 3.6 miles to work. Maybe tomorrow, instead of giving a talk about hypermiling in hot weather, Delta Flyer can discuss hypermiling in the rain.
Ophbalance 08-15-2008, 09:14 AM 42.2 over 49.0 miles this morning. It was fairly relaxing, for a Friday. I hit my two lights within the first 5 miles green. The same could not be said for the last two. Oh well.
0 gas used on the way to work this morning, and wont use any on the way home either (woo hoo, day off :) )
SlowHands 08-15-2008, 03:43 PM Well today's afternoon runs sure were interesting... the guess gauge had been in the red for probably 50 miles or so, and the low fuel light doesn't light. I'm FAIRLY confident that the SG is within a few %, but I don't know where the bottom of tank is... yeah a bit nervous.. this is where I had a sudden deja vu of Wayne slyly saying 'TRUST ME ON THIS..."
I had a gas can with for 2 days now for just in case. I picked up my son with about 41 mpg on the SG, and was showing I think 792 miles at his apartment. I told him he might get to be a witness at a small moment in history ;) he got a chuckle out of that...
Traffic was actually fairly heavy once we got off the side streets, its the middle of 'lunch rush', he was due at work at 1:00PM. Maintained a 40.1 to his lot, with 799 miles showing, and 8 miles to go according to the SG...hmmm I sure hope that the SG is right, cuz its about 8.5 miles to get to the gas station. With about 3 miles to go, the SG went to '0 miles to go' and showed 20.0 gallons used. <Increase pucker factor by 3x> I know Sean can appreciate the gauge needle bending around the pin at 'E' and having no gas station in sight... :p
I pulled into the BP station willing TorqueNada across the incredibly busy intersection, praying for 'no stall' to make it up the driveway hill and to the pump. Well, I made it! New PR Distance for a tank: 808.2 miles! I put in 19.909 gallons into the 20 gallon tank... SG needed just 1 nudge (.5%) to be right on the dot for calibration! :D By the way, I've been filling only to the first click, no roundup at usually the same pump. So I've now got a REAL good idea of where the bottom is ;) I stopped topping off in the fall last year, mostly for a matter of time at the station.
I just realized that my previous record tank of 776.3 miles was done on a tank that had been topped off... the difference on a top off is 2.535 gallons as measured last summer... lets see... oooooohhhhhh... a 900 mile tank??!! Well everyone needs goals...
Right Lane Cruiser 08-15-2008, 04:20 PM Way to go, Ken!!! :woot:
Yup, I remember a rather cold day in an unfamiliar car... with a couple of guys in the car with me... where we thought were going to get stranded in the middle of nowhere at -3F.
;)
You should top her off and go for that 900+mi tank!!
I had one of those, "Curses on these drivers!!! Can't they see what I'm trying to do?!?" days. I swear, people around here just lose all sensibility at times.
I made it up to Anoka at 135+mpg, then had to slog through with people who couldn't figure out what lane they wanted to be in, couldn't figure out how to signal before stopping for a turn, couldn't figure out how to do anything but stop in the space of 5' or less, and were too gutless after cutting me off to take a perfectly good opening in traffic for a turn. Oh, and did I mention the guys opening car doors into traffic without looking??
:(
Oh well. At least I kept the average up. Those 3 miles DID hurt, though. :p
81F, 1mph tailwind from the SSE, partly cloudy:

The tank remains at 120.3mpg over 496.5mi and I still have all 20 bars on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 121.7mpg over 44.2mi
Day 5 @ 120+mpg average.
JusBringIt 08-15-2008, 04:54 PM awesome job ken!!
Sean it seems like you're all about records huh ;). nice job on keeping it over 120.
I took my car on I-87 today, I underestimate my glide distances waaay too much. :D I arrived at my destination 10 miles away soon after.
49.2mpg 10mi (from work to pick up my check)
34.2mpg 11.8 mi
the second trip was to my fiance's from picking up my check. There was bumper to bumper traffic (rush hour in the city) and speed limit was 30 for the majority of the way and I had to stay in 3rd gear. There was a line of traffic behind me while I was going 30, one guy passed me on the double yellow  but people were pulling off onto their stops so I dont think many people got TOO impatient. I kinda felt bad, but was I to break the law to move that line from behind me?
Well I'm currently sitting at 511mi on the odo, so I'm over my last record :D I'll go get that gas can now. My manual says I have 2.1gal approx. when the LFL comes on. I've driven 66 miles so far, we'll see how this goes..I need to make it to 550 AT least :)
Ophbalance 08-15-2008, 06:11 PM Oy... It was stop'n'go for about 20 of 40 highway miles. Darn rain anyway. I got a 34.6 over 48.9 miles home.
MT bucket 08-15-2008, 07:41 PM Whohooo! had my best day yet in the D-van getting 29.7 mpg over 267 miles

D-van epa % may soon overtake the semi accoustic. i am going to try to ramp up the numbers on that car too, but it might take a while, I wont be putting enough of miles on it to keep up ;)
JusBringIt 08-15-2008, 07:45 PM I'M guessing the mitsu isnt able to do the job which is why you use the van? Just wondering :)
MT bucket 08-15-2008, 07:55 PM Justbringit
It can, but not as well, now that I can get near 30 mpg in the van it has become more profitable to keep driving it, because i can get more and better runs.
One good cargo load can pay for the extra expense of driving the van, then any more are extra dough for me.
the mitsu is back where i originally bought it for, back up, and my personal transportation.
Another thing, less gas will be burned overall if I drive the van, if i drove the car, then other vans or pickups would be dispatched to get those runs, lots of them getting 15 mpg!
diamondlarry 08-15-2008, 07:57 PM I seem like a broken record lately; 90+mpg everyday.:p Temps were 61F this morning and 78F this afternoon. Winds were <5mph this morning and ~10mph sustained with gusts to 20+ and they were from the north all day.

lamebums 08-15-2008, 11:39 PM Cooler tonight which bit into my numbers. Car didn't warm up for a LONG time.
61.6 - 12.7
63.1 - 15.3
My respect for semi truckers has just been lowered about two notches after being aggressively tailgated by one while coming across the Brent Spence Bridge, he hit his brights repeatedly, then went around, horn blaring. Then he cut into my lane and just about killed me with his rear set of tires. He then proceeded to tailgate another semi truck.
I responded by calling 911. I saw him pulled over at the top of the cut in the hill.

WAY to keep them in check Auston!
I happen to know this stretch of highway very well and because of the long grade (6 or 7% for 2 miles) truckers are supposed to stay in the right two lanes going up the hill. Truckers are often doing 35 MPH or less when they climb it, and can really gum up traffic if they're caught in the left lanes. They've had a hard time with compliance so the Kentucky State Police deployed a "vehicle enforcement" car to work the hill. So I know at all times there's a cop up there who more often than not has a semi pulled over
diamondlarry 08-16-2008, 02:56 AM Larry, you make prius owners out there look like FSP's!

I'll bet Mr. Skeptic would really go berserk if he saw my results for today's driving. I blew away several PR's today.:D The temp was 56F this morning with winds from a northernly direction@ ~5mph. When I got out of work at 11:45am, the temp was ~75F and the winds had picked up to ~10mph from the NW. Conditions were perfect for the work commute segments and I don't know if they will ever line up again so don't get used to those numbers.:p
1. 105-11.0(home to work-NEW PR!:woot:)
2. 105-11.0(work to home-NEW PR!:woot:)
3. 98.8-9.2(home to Wmart)
4. 100-21.0(Wmart to store that had a sale on T-bones@ $4.99/#)
5. 119-13.8(store to home)
Average for today was 105.0(NEW PR!:woot:(day 41@ 80+ and day 21@ 90+) and the tank is at 97.6 after 264.0 miles with 10 of 10 pips on the guess gauge and the "gas" gauge still bouncing between 97.5% and 100%.
Ophbalance 08-16-2008, 04:10 PM I had to drive to Virginia to pick up my son today (his grand parents met me halfway). I averaged 42.1 over 380 miles. Woot! And it's still just a tick under half a tank. This is shaping up to be a 600 mile tank for sure ;). No air, and I just set the cruise for 60 MPH the whole way up, and 64 for the majority of the way back. Which, when adjusted, is actually about 56 and 60. I'm going to have to keep the missus out of the car so that I can hit that 600 mile mark. It certainly seems to be more uphill heading into Virginia. I didn't even pull it into the 40 MPG range until about 60 miles into the trip.
JusBringIt 08-16-2008, 05:14 PM Went to the bank today:
infinite mpg 2.4mi there and back. I suited up, ran there and back
Right Lane Cruiser 08-16-2008, 05:41 PM Cripes, Larry!! 13.8mi @ 119mpg?!?
Way to go, man!!!! :woot:
JimboK 08-16-2008, 08:16 PM Thanks Jim. I'm in the process of getting my receipt posted. We'll see what he has to say about that.:p

Go git 'em!
Given Larry's recent results, I've felt rather inferior even thinking about posting here. I was all giddy about getting this screen shot today and uploading it ...

... until after reading Larry's results today. ;) This was across town from my part time job site to my fiancee's house, through the middle of Richmond.

Jim, there's nothing "inferior" about 93 mpg through town. Awesome job!:woot: As I mentioned in my post everything was aligned perfectly(planets, full moon, traffic, weather, etc.:D) so it's as much about luck as anything and it's not likely to happen very often if even ever again.
MT bucket 08-16-2008, 08:30 PM I put on a hundred miles on the Mistubishi today, first real drive since I got it fixed, wow, what an en LIGHTening experience.:)
After driving the D-van for a few thousand miles Hming then with the SG getting the feel of what really uses fuel, like pulling that hulk of metal up a hill, getting back it the car felt so different, so light, even with the smaller ice it went up hills so much easier, and also get up to speed with so little effort. the only downside is the glides seem a little shorter, but if it takes much less gas to get back up to speed, thats cool, plus i can fas on the glides whooo hooo! :)
Of course the other big downer is my sg wont work in this car. So I don't have a clue what I am getting for FE, but it feels like at least 70 mpg!;) Mabye at fill up time I will be brought back to reality  But I really enjoyed the ride, nice being able to drive some where without have to be "On Time" :D
warthog1984 08-16-2008, 09:42 PM Sigh...
Put 30 mi I wasn't planning to on the Civic today. Locked myself out of the apt, office & maintainence were closed.
Dropped the dog at the groomers to get him out of the heat, and rented a ladder to get back in through an open window.
OTOH, the A/C and jockeying around the lumberyard probably killed my mileage.
lamebums 08-16-2008, 10:15 PM Thanks Jim. I'm in the process of getting my receipt posted. We'll see what he has to say about that.:p

Hi Larry--
Can I suggest you track 100+ MPG days, too? Then send it into Toyota and demand they make the Mfd display three digits instead of two (999.9 instead of 99.9). :)

That's an interesting idea Auston. I'm not sure how many times I have done that though.:( I keep track of all my segments on my Palm Lifedrive but I haven't been writing down the daily averages.:( I will have to go through and see if I can find the 100+ days. A quick search here on CleanMPG seems to show 3 or 4 different instances?
lamebums 08-17-2008, 01:43 AM 62.1 - 13.2 (home to White Castle)
72.0 - 1.9 (White Castle to Wal-Mart)
52.2 - 1.9 (Wal-Mart back to White Castle--Hadi and I took one car to save gas)
63.0 - 15.3 (coming back home).
I'm down under a quarter of a tank after 530 miles.
"Dude, the car needs gas..."
Oh, and a close inspection under the hood shows me that my car meets ULEV standards but that doesn't mean anything since Kentucky did away with emissions tests years ago.
We need emissions tests back. I'm sick of getting stuck behind Plymouth vans that set off a blue smoke bomb every time they go WOT when the light goes green. :(
SlowHands 08-17-2008, 08:47 AM Larry!! Awesome work getting the THREE PR's!! That is WFEC territory!
JimboK!! 93 mpg for that distance is quite an accomplishment.
Auston: I cracked up with the 'Dude, the car needs gas.." I can appreciate the difference between the van and the car, its like the Guzzler to TorqueNada... its WORLDS apart ;)
45.7 going home last night, this morning a very nice 52.8 mpg despite having to deal with some snarl because a pickup truck took out a utility pole (knocked it about 20' taking the power lines along with it, snapping them off from the other poles, killing power to everything for probably a mile around or more.
Tank is still at a goofy 44.7 mpg at 74 miles...
diamondlarry 08-17-2008, 11:48 AM Thanks for the kind words Ken. You have been doing some awesome work yourself lately!
WOW! What a day today! Remember how I said that things were lined up perfectly yesterday and they probably never would again? Well, they did somehow. The FE gods must be cutting me some slack for all the crap they gave me last winter.:D:p The temp was 59F this morning with winds from the SW@ ~5 mph. I saw a high of 79F and the winds have picked up a bit to 5-10 mph from the SW with gust to ~20 mph.
1. 93.7-5.5(home to Church)
2. 135-4.7(Church to home-NEW PR BY SO MUCH THAT I DON'T RECALL!:woot:)
3. 123-9.1(home to Applebee's)
4. 100-9.2(Applebee's to home)
Average for today was 109.8(NEW PR! and day 42@ 80+mpg, day 22@ 90+mpg, and day 2@ 100+mpg:D) and the tank is at 97.2 after 293.6 miles with 10 pips on the guess gauge and the "gas"@ 97.5%
TracyJean 08-17-2008, 02:35 PM :purplebananna: I was at the North Texas hypermilers meeting in Lewisville yesterday and the clinic I got from Dan is already paying off now that I have seen dfco in action and have an understanding of how to make it work. Three trip segments today were personal bests and that's after the first two segments where I couldn't seem to get the car to do dfco!
1. 3.4 miles - 34 MPG (home to church)
2. 4 - 30.7 (church to JCPenny)
3. 6.9 - 46 (JCPenny to home) PERSONAL BEST by 2 MPG
4. 38.9 - 50.5 (Home to NAS Ft. Worth) PERSONAL BEST by 4.5 MPG
5. 38.2 - 48.4 (NAS Ft. Worth to home) PERSONAL BEST by 18.3 MPG
That last segment is a killer. It's the one that I had such a dropoff in FE after I filled up with gas while at NAS Ft. Worth several weeks ago. Also, it's mostly uphill and there is a killer hill that runs from about 1.5 to 1 mile from the exit for home. I was going to count myself lucky if I could hit low 40s with that trip.
Right now, with just over 1/4 tank left, I just hit 300 on the trip odometer and I'm sitting at 40.35 MPG for the tank (302.2 miles/7.49 gallons). :woot:
Thank you, Dan! Thank you, THANK YOU!
RichXKU 08-17-2008, 03:38 PM We need emissions tests back. I'm sick of getting stuck behind Plymouth vans that set off a blue smoke bomb every time they go WOT when the light goes green. :(
That seems to be common among those 90s caravans and voyagers.
It doesn't help much in PA when passing emissions is as easy as buying one's mechanic a case of beer.
My trip this weekend:
60.3 over 80mi to the old neighborhood (5 MPH crosswind)
58.3 back (10 MPH headwind!)
Tank sits at 58.0
An extreme topoff this fillup got me 130 miles before the "F" slash!
Chuck 08-17-2008, 05:56 PM 96.5mpg over 76 miles today.
PaleMelanesian 08-18-2008, 08:50 AM I drove to Dallas on Friday night to meet some high school classmates from overseas, 10 years later.
There from work, 85 degrees, 5 mph crosswind = 69.2 mpg / 134 miles.
Back after midnight, 75 deg, 10 mph crosswind = 70.9 mpg / 134 miles.
Halfway there, fully warmed up with an empty road, I decided to see what was possible. I slowed down to a WFEC-style P&G segment. See the results:
http://mcguckin.us/files/car/85_6_mpg_segment.jpg
85.6 mpg / 16 miles. :D That's pretty much the limit for this car. Conditions were about perfect.
(I'm still adjusting my SG calibration for ethanol. If anything, these numbers are low ;))

update for technique details:
I was letting it go down to about 20 mph, and pulsing in 4th or 5th depending on the terrain, to a max of maybe 45 or 50 mph. I was very intently watching the trip mpg, and trying to keep the low mpg of each pulse higher than the previous. For example, it's at 85 mpg, and I pulse until it reads 83.0, then FAS. I don't pulse again until it's at least 85 again, and this time pulse until 83.1 or 83.2. I was letting that routine dictate the speeds.
There were some long and painful uphills where I had to use a little more, and those dropped the average below 80 for a moment. I FAS'ed before the crest of the hill to ride up and over at some ridiculous speed - 10mph or something. No more gas until at least the flat ground on the other side.
Total number of P&G cycles? Easily over 100, but I have no idea for sure.
I held it out as long as I could, but then I came to a town. I pulled over and got my pics there.
JusBringIt 08-18-2008, 09:30 AM Holy god andrew!! do you have one of those batman hooks? strapped it to a poor sucker did ya?? NICE JOB!
I had a bit of trouble this morning
34.9mpg 8.7mi into work today.....I had to reverse and I also idled for a bit longer since I needed a jump start.
Yesterday I went out to my car to get a cd, left my car with a starter switch installed, so no key on/off for me :D.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-18-2008, 01:40 PM Geez, Andrew!!!
:woot:
fanamingo 08-18-2008, 04:13 PM Andrew, that's awesome! Can you give us more detail? I see the 35 mph average, but what was your P&G window (speeds, rpm) and in what gear? Any guess as to the number of P&G segments over the 16 miles? If I get half that mileage, I consider it reasonable.
PaleMelanesian 08-19-2008, 08:15 AM Thanks guys! I updated the post above with some technique details.
